I am set on giving any future daughters of mine either the names of my grandmothers or “retro” or “old-fashioned” names. Here are some of the names I have been considering.
Beulah
Gertrude
Rosemary/Rosemarie
Jacqueline
Louise
Annette
Maisie
Jade
However, all other baby name websites I seem to go on discourage these names, calling them “ugly” and “stupid” and stuff like that. And comments like that have made me have second thoughts on my name choices. Do I stick with my guts or try looking for other options?

Actually I’d describe [name_f]Jade[/name_f] as modern!
There’s nothing wrong with old lady names. They’re not everyone’s taste but they’re charming in their own way

I think these are quite easy to wear, but I personally would not want to be called Beulah or Gertrude (though maybe Gertie would be an alternative).

Stick with your guts! They might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but they’re meaningful and special to you. That’s what’s most important. Plus your daughter might only be the only one with her name in a classroom, that could be nice. She wouldn’t be [name_f]Emma[/name_f] P. [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] B.

If you genuinely love these names, then I think you should stick with them. You’re never going to find a name that everyone loves. [name_m]Even[/name_m] common and popular names attract criticism online.
The only names on your list that stick out to me as sounding “old-fashioned” are [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]. The rest seem quite contemporary to me. Perhaps we live in different countries, but [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is very popular in the UK right now, and [name_f]Jade[/name_f] was very popular here in the 1990s. I don’t see them as being “old lady” names at all.

I would imagine that only Beulah and Gertrude would generate a negative reaction from most people. Jacqueline feels a bit dated still, but I think most people find it usable. Rosemary, Annette, and Louise are just the sort of vintage names everyone is loving these days. And Maisie and Jade feel right on trend, too.
And, if it helps, growing up, I was in choir with a Gertrude “Gertie”, and my youngest sister had a friend called Rosemary when she was a kid. So people are using them and children are wearing them well.
Of your list, I particularly love Louise. It’s such an elegant classic that deserves more love, imo. I also think Annette would be unexpected and sweet, and I love nn “Annie” for it!

[name_f]My[/name_f] feeling is that [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] are two “old lady” names that should not be foisted on any child today.
I love older more retro, older fashioned names! They are so sweet, simple, elegant and charming all at once! I really love your list and at the end of the day, if you want to name your future daughters an “old lady” name, that is up to you, if you love it that should be all that matters!
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f] and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] are the only ones from your list that are “textbook” old fashioned, and they are still so sweet! The others but especially [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] and [name_f]Jade[/name_f] are very much contemporary loves right now for many!
I would not let any site or article sway you from choosing a name you love and that has meaning!

Stick with your gut - the old lady names are gorgeous! Jade, Maisie, Rosemary/Rosemarie, and Louise even feel on trend. Beulah & Gertrude (and maybe Annette) are the only ones I would be surprised to hear but I still like them. Especially if you leaned into Trudy for Gertrude or something I think it would be a name I would love to see.

I love the name [name_f]Jade[/name_f] because it’s the name of my favorite video game heroine: [name_f]Jade[/name_f] Thyrus from Beyond Good and Evil. Plus, gem names are very trendy nowadays but I worry they might grow too popular.
Thank you.
I like to go for full names rather than nicknames, so I can give the person a chance to choose which nickname they’d like to have.
Yeah, she would stand out, huh? Plus, imagine a “cool” girl at school named [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] or a popular girl named [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]. It’d be refreshing, non?

[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] and [name_f]Jade[/name_f] feel fresh but they do go back!!
I love [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is also lovely.
I don’t always love old fashioned names so I am not the best to weigh in here but the ones I like that I would suggest:
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Ines[/name_f] or [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f] or [name_f]Idalie[/name_f] or [name_f]Idalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Yvette[/name_f]
[name_f]Yvonne[/name_f]
[name_f]Lana[/name_f]
[name_f]Lola[/name_f] or [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
Stick to your guts! Its your daughter’s name and vintage names are stylish again.
I’m from [name_f]Canada[/name_f], and these names aren’t quite as common here as they may be overseas. [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] and [name_u]Madison[/name_u] seem to be the trendy names here, while [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is kinda considered a grandma name here.

I love old lady names! All your names are really beautiful. But coming from a mass-majority perspective, [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] might get less positive feedback than your other names.
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f] was my late grandmother’s name while [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f] was my aunt (we called her Jackie). [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] or “Gertie” was the name of a famous animated dinosaur made by [name_u]Windsor[/name_u] McKay, the grandfather of animation and as a cartoonist I’m very into animation history. So I can agree with you to some extend. But I kind of love older names because the feel almost “fairy tale” like, or maybe a name you’d find in a classic novel or theater show. And as someone who’s the artsy type, those names sound very grand and opulent to my ears but also kind of hipster and yet not too modern. I’ve always found “old people” names very stylish.
That’s nice to hear!
[name_u]Louise[/name_u] was my grandfather’s sister. She’s known for her beautiful paintings, and as an artist that kind of makes me associate the name with her paintings. While [name_f]Annette[/name_f] is my grandmama, but she doesn’t like her name at all, and “Annie” is a bit too common with “Anna” names being trending. But thank you so much!
Yeah, I just think [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] has a very soft sweet sound that’s cozy to the ears with very pretty meanings such as “God’s forgiveness” or “Loved” or “Acceptance”, while [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] is very strong, opulent, and classy with a cool meaning. Plus, imagine how cute a baby with those names could possibly be?
I just love the names because they sound so pleasing to me. [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] has a soft “u” and “la” sound while [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] sounds strong and classy. I’m also fond of those “old names” because they’re very historical and artsy.
Yeah, if I love a name, I should keep it. It’s my choice, not anyone else’s but me and my partners.
*Maisie is kind of an older woman’s name where I’m from. It’s my Nan’s name.

I kind of like “surprising” names. They stick in your head and wouldn’t be mistaken for any other.
