Should i name my son Brooks?

I’m starting to have doubts. does it sound pretentious? Brothers name is [name]Graham[/name].

I love the name [name]Brooks[/name]! I honestly think it is the opposite of pretentious!!

I really like the name [name]Brooks[/name]. I know a guy in his late 20’s with the name and he wears it nicely.

I like [name]Brooks[/name]. I don’t think it sounds pretentious. I think it sounds very country (probably due to the band [name]Brooks[/name] and [name]Dunn[/name]).

I love [name]Brooks[/name]! I agree that it’s not pretentious. I think [name]Graham[/name] and [name]Brooks[/name] are lovely together!

[name]Love[/name] [name]Brooks[/name]!!

I think it sounds a bit country-clubbish, but I don’t think it’s necessarily flat-out pretentious. Also, it goes well with [name]Graham[/name].

I like it, I know one and he wears it well, I think it’s totally usable.

[name]Brooks[/name] is a great choice. I really like it with [name]Graham[/name].

I don’t care for the name at all. I know of two little boys named [name]Brooks[/name] and even they don’t help me like the name. I don’t know what is. I think of country and a horse for some reason. Saying [name]Brooks[/name] and [name]Graham[/name] makes me thinks of [name]Brooks[/name] and [name]Dunn[/name].

I think of the guy that hung himself in “Shawshank Redemption.” And that was his last name. It does not sound pretentious, it sounds like a little hipster in the making. [name]Graham[/name] is very cute. What about [name]Brett[/name] instead? It’s not unusual like [name]Brooks[/name], but honestly I think unusual names, although trendy, end up being very regretted by both the parents and the kid. I have an unusual name and I got so tired of constantly correcting people on how to say it and spell it.

I only [name]Brooks[/name] that I know is more cowboy than country club so maybe I perceive the name differently than some?

I think of an actual brook/stream/river & country music.
The whole [name]Brooks[/name] Brothers aspect didn’t come to me immediately.

I think a name like this would really only come off as pretentious or preppy if [name]Brooks[/name]’ family IS pretentious or preppy. If he comes off as a down to earth kid grom a nice family I don’t think the name will put anyone off.

[name]Brooks[/name] is not a name that people will have that much difficulty spelling. (I know this first hand as it was my maiden name.) Sometimes people asked if it had an e in it ([name]Brookes[/name]) but I don’t think that people would ask that as much if it was a boy’s first name as opposed to a last name.

Although it is seeing an upswing in popularity, [name]Brooks[/name] doesn’t have a trendy vibe to me. As a last name (granted a somewhat different situation) it never quite down to earth while not super common. (I now have a ln that makes me feel a bit more pretentious unfortunately and I sometimes miss [name]Brooks[/name]).

As a side note, my mother-in-law’s maiden name is [name]Graham[/name] and I [name]LOVE[/name] that as a first name (we used it as a mn though). I think [name]Brooks[/name] matches nicely with [name]Graham[/name]. [name]Both[/name] are also last names. [name]Both[/name] have a softer feel to them. I think you have a great choice!

Good luck.

Thank you everyone for your input! Zaella, i think you nailed a lot of what i am struggling with on the head. I don’t think of [name]Brooks[/name] as very trendy because generations before have used it…however, i have seen it paired with names like [name]Knox[/name], [name]Ava[/name], [name]Crew[/name] which aren’t really my style…so it’s hard for me to tell if it’s a name that might be trying too hard to be “cool” or just a nice name that never really caught on.

FWIW, our only runner up is [name]Arthur[/name]. Which i love…but not sure i love it for my son. For some reason i feel like i would feel badly naming my son that since it think it has a “nerdy” stereotype attached to it. I feel like my son wouldn’t like to have the name [name]Arthur[/name].

My immediate association with [name]Brooks[/name] was [name]Brooks[/name] Brothers. With [name]Graham[/name], it was graham crackers, more of a down home association. So stylistically I do get a bit of a disconnect. On the other hand, they are both short surname names that wear well in this era. I do have some inner ambivalence for you, and slightly prefer [name]Arthur[/name], but that isn’t quite right either. But I’m someone who loves to have three choices for big decisions, in general. I’d suggest [name]Beck[/name], which has some similarity to [name]Brooks[/name], and also goes quite well with [name]Graham[/name].
