Should I rename Cora? Please help!

I need your help nameberries!

I had a daughter born in [name]March[/name] and we named her [name]Cora[/name] (middle name [name]Juliet[/name]). At the time I thought it was a fairly unusual name as it was number 458 in the name charts for 2011 (I live in the U.K) however shortly after we announced her name I was informed that there was a [name]Cora[/name] in the show Downton [name]Abbey[/name] and in the popular show Eastenders which I did not know about which then got me worried about the popularity of it. [name]Every[/name] time we have been to baby groups and I tell people her name I get “Oh I know a few baby Coras!”

My problem is I really don’t want her to have a popular name as I have one myself and hated it and don’t want her to end up with another in her class at school. I’m debating whether I should change it, I wish we had gone with our second choice [name]Calla[/name] but I think it will be very difficult to completely change her name now so I was thinking of just coming up with an alternative to [name]Cora[/name] so we can still call her that but if we do come across many others we can use her longer name.

I’m thinking [name]Coralie[/name] or [name]Corabel[/name]?

I’m also considering hyphenating her name, ones I like are [name]Cora[/name]-[name]Faye[/name], [name]Cora[/name]-[name]Mauve[/name], [name]Cora[/name]-[name]Belle[/name], [name]Cora[/name]-[name]Jean[/name], [name]Cora[/name]-[name]Beth[/name]

What do people think?

You should not rename her. I don’t believe these people really know any [name]Cora[/name] except yours. Maybe that’s just catch-phrase.

I definitely wouldn’t change it. You picked a beautiful name and you’ve been calling her by that name since [name]March[/name]. It’s her name now! I think you should just worry less about whether it’s popular or not.

[name]Do[/name] not rename her. We love the name [name]Sybil[/name] (from Downton [name]Abbey[/name]) and if it suddenly grew in popularity after we name our daughter that we would not change it. [name]Cora[/name] is beautiful! Leave it!

Personally I think [name]Cora[/name] might get a little more popular but will never be as epidemic as [name]Emily[/name]/[name]Jennifer[/name]/[name]Ashley[/name]. I don’t think there will be 5 or 6 little [name]Cora[/name]'s in each class. And even if it ever did become epidemically popular it would be years down the road so your little [name]Cora[/name] wouldn’t have anything to worry about.

That being said if you decide it’s way too popular for your taste I like the idea of [name]Coralie[/name] and [name]Cora[/name]-[name]Beth[/name]

I am considering [name]Cora[/name] for our [name]October[/name] baby (does that put you off still more?!). Also in UK. However, there were only 93 of them in 2011. That is [name]WAY[/name] down the list when you consider that for every name higher than that there are are many many more babies than any named [name]Cora[/name]. And 2011 is long after Downton started; were it going to have an effect it would have had one by now.

I don’t think you should rename her. To reassure yourself, go back down the Stats list and look at the names above it. [name]How[/name] many of THEM do you know? Probably not many. You are always more conscious of your own baby’s name than others. I don’t think it’s about to have a massive surge; there are others that will hit the heights long before [name]Cora[/name] does.

If you do choose to rename, I think a hyphenated name would be the best route to take. [name]Cora[/name]-[name]Faye[/name] is very pretty!

I think [name]Cora[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] is beautiful! Let it be. I don’t think it’s as popular as everyone is letting on. Have you meet a lot of [name]Cora[/name]'s?

I don’t think you should. I agree that, although [name]Cora[/name] may get a little more popular here over the years, the time has come and gone for it to have a massive boost courtesy of DA and EastEnders. And I don’t mean to be harsh, but I don’t really see the point in changing it or hyphenating it and still calling her [name]Cora[/name]. Hyphenating seems like a very trendy thing to do at the moment and it’s a lot of hassle when she’d still be called by the same name. Are there actually any other Coras in your baby groups or is it just other people saying that? Unless you actually know a load of little Coras, it shouldn’t matter so much- it’s just hearsay.

So #458 really isn’t popular! I do a lot of voluntary work with kids and I’ve found that names out of the top 200ish are very rare. And don’t forget that whilst you hated your popular name, she may love knowing someone else called [name]Cora[/name]! It’s a really lovely name though. Good luck with whatever you choose

I wouldn’t rename for popularity. [name]How[/name] about using first and middle as a double barrel if you happen to run across another at some point.

[name]Cora[/name]-[name]Juliet[/name] would work for uniqueness.

[name]Cora[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] is beautiful! I have only met 1 little [name]Cora[/name] and I am around a lot of kids. I wouldn’t rename her. I don’t think you are going to have tons of [name]Cora[/name]'s running around. She might have 2 or 3 in her whole school.

[name]Cora[/name] is beautiful. I’m a HUGE Downton [name]Abbey[/name] fan! I think maybe [name]Coralie[/name] nn [name]Cora[/name] or maybe even [name]Coral[/name]?

Good luck

Thanks everyone for your opinions.

It just worries me how quickly its risen in popularity as when I found it a few years ago it seemed pretty much unheard of. I’m sure the characters named [name]Cora[/name] in these two shows are to blame! It wouldn’t bother me so much if it became popular in a few years, I just don’t want there to be loads around her age and in her class.

I’ve not actually met another [name]Cora[/name] yet, its just people telling me they know of Coras but that makes me think I will run into them at some point.
I think I might leave it how it is for now as we will still be calling her [name]Cora[/name] anyway but may possibly want a longer name to put down when she starts nursery/school.

If you haven’t already, you MUST watch The Last of the Mohicans. The heroine [name]Cora[/name] (played by the luminous [name]Madeleine[/name] [name]Stowe[/name]) is so absolutely gorgeous that you’ll fall in love with the name all over again.

I’m over here in the US, and honestly, you will rarely know any kids with names even on the outer edges of the top 100.

I will use my eighth grade class as an example. Most of us were born in '98. According to the list in the states, [name]Sophia[/name] was ranked seventy three. There isn’t an eighth grader named [name]Sophia[/name] (or [name]Sofia[/name]) out of almost 400 kids. (In my state, [name]Sophia[/name] was higher at 65, but we live in close proximity to a major military base and families are from all around the nation who move frequently, so the national data is more accurate.)

[name]Cora[/name] is just a familiar name in the UK. But on the flip side, there are four Marcellas, a name that ranked 895 in '98. However, this is incredibly uncommon.

However, don’t let popularity ruin a name. [name]Cora[/name] is a beautiful classic that any girl would love to have.

[name]Cora[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] is beautiful. Personally I would always advise against renaming a child in such a non-emergency situation (if there is such a thing as a name emergency:)). It may be rising in popularity; if so take pleasure in the fact that you were one of the trendsetters.
I think you can use [name]Coralie[/name] as a nickname, if it’s less popular. ([name]Cora[/name]+[name]Juliet[/name] --> [name]Cora[/name]+[name]Julie[/name] --> [name]Cora[/name]+lie.) [name]Even[/name] though it’s a name in and of itself, [name]Coralie[/name] sounds more nicknamey to me than [name]Cora[/name] anyway.

It’s actually been relatively steady (just a few ups and downs) since the year 2000. A handful fewer in 2011 than in 2010.

Really I wouldn’t worry. Baby Names in England & Wales

Leave cora juliet alone. It is stunning!

I think it is stupid to rename a child just because it is becoming popular. Sure, I can see renaming a kid because the name doesn’t “fit” or because it is absolutely ridiculous and trendeigh, but renaming the kid just because you think their name is getting “too” popular is, well, dumb. I don’t mean to insult you or anything, but come on now…
