Should popularity of sibling names match?

My top boys name, [name_m]Albert[/name_m], is in the top 100 (UK) but my other boys names are nowhere near that, some aren’t even in the top 1000. But to me [name_m]Albert[/name_m] and [name_m]Percival[/name_m], or [name_m]Albie[/name_m] and [name_u]Percy[/name_u] as they’re likely to be called, sound like brothers.

What do you think, does it matter that one names is a million times more common? Does that make them feel like they’re not suited as siblings?

When it comes to girls names it’s not so much an issue as [name_f]Bethany[/name_f] and [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] are in the top 100 and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is just out. My other girls choices are less common but [name_f]Bethany[/name_f], [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] are my top 3. It does make the issue though that they’re likely to have a brother with a much less common name. [name_m]Will[/name_m] it sound out of place?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think you could make sibsets from my signature or are do you think they don’t particulalrly go together?

I don’t think that matters. My sister’s name and mine are very different (Top 10 and out of Top 100) and we have been told they sound wonderful together a lot.

I think names of different popularities can be well suited to each other. I don’t think any of the names in your signature are mismatched (and I don’t think it matters if they are). I like to have names of similar popularities in a sibset, because I personally wouldn’t want to have a really popular name that a lot of other people have, whilst my siblings had more unusual, rarely heard ones, and the opposite might apply too. But I doubt that you’d even hear names that aren’t in the top 20 or so, all that often, so it probably wouldn’t make a huge difference.

I dont think it makes a difference. In my immediate family 2 of my 4 brothers names are really common. but the other 2 are nearly unheard of. the one is for sure. lol. And my name is rather uncommon. [name_m]Ive[/name_m] never met another female with the same name. but they sound fine when my mom used to yell them all out on the playground growing up. Its about flow not popularity i think. Also i love your name choices.

I don’t think it matters.
I believe if you like a name use it. The only time I say it is bad is when you have an [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] or [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and want to name your next child [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] or [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. I don’t think it matters if they are ‘mismatched’ as long as you like them.

Thanks everyone! That’s good to know. I always thought my names were well suited as siblings but I guess I just thought they’d be closer in popularity too so was shocked when they weren’t!

I wouldn’t necessarily say I prefer names to have a similar popularity, but I like them to be similarly perceived in the public eye; for example, [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] was out of the Top 1000 in the US until the last couple of years, but [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] seem equally familiar and are the same style, and I have no problem seeing them as sisters even though [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is in the Top 200.

Same goes for [name_m]Albert[/name_m] and [name_m]Percival[/name_m]. Though [name_m]Albert[/name_m] appeals to a wider audience, leading to higher popularity, [name_m]Albert[/name_m] and [name_m]Percival[/name_m] are similar in style and are both easily recognizable, so to me, they are perfectly usable as brothers. Plus, [name_u]Percy[/name_u] makes [name_m]Percival[/name_m] even more familiar, and [name_u]Percy[/name_u] did place in the Top 1000 for the UK, at least.

Of the names in your signature, I think [name_m]Hezekiah[/name_m], [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f], and [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], are the few that stick out. I could easily see those three together as siblings, and if you ended up having twelve children they would all work together, but I’d be surprised to see [name_m]Hezekiah[/name_m], [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] and [name_m]Albert[/name_m], not because of mismatched popularity, but because of style.

I don’t think it really matters, it’s more about how they sound. [name_m]Albert[/name_m] and [name_m]Percival[/name_m] sound like they are from the same era - I think Anglo [name_m]Saxon[/name_m] [name_f]England[/name_f] & [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - so they would suit each other wonderfully.

I would say that in a sense of an [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] sister to an [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] would be strange. But I think if they are still in the same vein, like [name_m]Albert[/name_m] and [name_u]Percy[/name_u] it’s okay.

It’s not a huge deal. If you like it, you like it.

I know a mother who named her son, and daughter [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]. Both names were very unusual at the time (they’re about 20 and 18 now). When she had her second son she wanted something else unusual. Originally, she wanted [name_u]Noah[/name_u], but everyone said it was awful (how times change!). In the end she went with [name_m]Ethan[/name_m]. Compared to [name_m]Chay[/name_m] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] is pretty common, but the sibset still sounds wonderful

I think your names in your signature make great sib nicknames… for example [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Timothy[/name_m] and [name_m]Albert[/name_m] could NN as [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], [name_m]Timmy[/name_m] and [name_u]Bertie[/name_u] which is super cute…

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] would be adorable as [name_f]Edie[/name_f] and [name_f]Dot[/name_f], [name_f]Sera[/name_f] and [name_m]Sol[/name_m], [name_f]Betty[/name_f] and [name_m]Walt[/name_m]… all the nicknames work really well.
