Should this worry us?

We have a pretty common last name. We found a few names we love for our girl, but after a google search found out that 3 of them are used by adult film stars! Yuck, but should we let that rule out the names?

I guess it depends on how common the “celebrity” is and whether or not their last name is the same as yours.
Can I ask what your girl name choices are?

Same last name. Not sure how popular the “celebrity” is… we have zero knowledge when it comes to the “adult” film genre.

I don’t know how many people would pick up on that, but if they did, well… then you know what they’re up to in their spare time! LOL. The only porn star names I’m aware of are [name]Ron[/name] [name]Jeremy[/name], [name]Jenna[/name] [name]Jameson[/name], “[name]Dirk[/name] Diggler” and one named [name]Jayden[/name] [name]Jaymes[/name], but only because she was on an episode of “[name]True[/name] Life” on MTV.

I think no matter what name you choose, there’s going to be someone for whom it has a bad connotation. What matters is what the name means to YOU.

If you think the name has been ruined for you now that you know of ‘adult film’ stars with those names, then you may have to let them go … however, I can’t imagine many adult film stars are that famous that people would associate your child with the person …

Also, I think most adult film stars fade quite quickly, as I should imagine it is not exactly a job you can be doing into your sixties (or forties), so by the time anyone may possibly be googling your daughter (colleges or future employers, perhaps) they should have faded from the limelight and not come up.

I do have to say that if I had the same last name as a porn star I wouldn’t give my child their first name…

It doesn’t seem like something that would come up very often, if ever. No small children will know the name of an adult-film star, and how many pre-school teachers or gymnastics coaches or children’s store employees are going to start talking about adult films around you and your children? Unless it bothers you personally, I wouldn’t give it a second thought!

I agree. I think now that I know I will always be bothered by it. Ruins some of my most favorite names though.

that stinks! :frowning:

It’s really difficult to judge how important a factor this is unless we know what the names are. If they’re ordinary enough names, also shared by lots of upstanding businesspeople, artists etc, then it doesn’t matter. Or are you drawn to the kinds of names that adult film stars take on for themselves, which might signal a bigger kind of issue? I appreciate your concerns and if you want to share the specific names, I’m sure you’ll get some great advice here!

if it’s something generic, like [name]Emma[/name] [name]Smith[/name], then I say don’t worry, even if there happens to be a porn star who also has that name.

But, if it is more along the lines of what sounds like a “porn star name” (made up example, Roxxie [name]Richards[/name]), AND there happens to be an actual porn star with that name, then I would think twice.

I certainly wouldn’t name my daughter [name]Velvet[/name] or [name]Star[/name]!

I will actually do a Google image search of a name to see which images come back. Yes I am put off if the name I’m searching belongs to a porn star ect. Of course I really think it depends on the name. I bet most porn star names aren’t even their real names just like most actors. If the name were say [name]Katherine[/name] I think your pretty safe, just like some one said with [name]Emma[/name]. If the name however has a unique spelling, I wouldn’t touch it. Also try and do a search for some more respectable people with the same name. It’s a big world and chances are you will share you name with some one some day, maybe a world leader maybe a porn star.
