Sibella too close to Isabella?

I have been loving the name [name]Sibella[/name]. I like [name]Sibyl[/name], but love [name]Sibella[/name]. I saw it in a magazine and can’t get it out of my head. My problem is that [name]Sibella[/name] is so close to [name]Isabella[/name] in terms of sound that I think it would be mistaken for [name]Isabella[/name] when pronounced. I do like [name]Isabella[/name] but I don’t like how common it has become. I would hate to have to continually correct people by saying no it’s not [name]Isabella[/name], it’s [name]Sibella[/name]. Also, I really don’t like the catch all nickname of [name]Bella[/name]. What do you think?

[name]Sibella[/name] is lovely. I think it sounds very international in the best way. However you would be correcting people all the time. I don’t think that [name]Sibella[/name] would get stuck with [name]Bella[/name] because when I think of using [name]Bella[/name] as a nickname it is with names that have 2 distinct parts like [name]Annabella[/name] or [name]Isabella[/name] I don’t think [name]Si[/name] would stand on it’s own so it is in a way merged with the [name]Bella[/name] part of [name]Sibella[/name] therefore not naturally lending it’s self to that separation.

I love [name]Sibella[/name]! I do think that there would likely be some confusion, but the name is so lovely that I honestly think it’s worth it.

I don’t think [name]Sibella[/name] being mistaken as [name]Isabella[/name] will be too much of a problem. “[name]Si[/name]” sounds different from “[name]Isa[/name]”. If you don’t like [name]Bella[/name] as a nickname you could just use [name]Sibyl[/name]. I don’t like [name]Bella[/name] either so I would personally use [name]Belle[/name].

I think [name]Sibella[/name] is lovely!
Now, if you had a daughter named [name]Isabella[/name] and wanted to name a subsequent daughter [name]Sibella[/name], then yes, they are too close (by the title of this post, I thought that’s what the question was).
[name]Sibella[/name] being too close to [name]Isabella[/name] to use in general? Nope. I guarantee that she will be called [name]Isabella[/name] at least a dozen times in her lifetime, but I don’t think that’s a reason not to use the name. Heck, I’ve been called [name]Lizzy[/name] a bunch of times and my name is [name]Lucy[/name].
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] the name Sibil·la.

I think you’d be fine 'cause with [name]Sibella[/name] the emphasis is on the first part & with the [name]Isabella[/name] the emphasis is on the second part. At least it is with how I’m saying it.

I think you’ll be fine with it.

Bizarrely, I love [name]Sibella[/name], but I don’t really like [name]Isabella[/name].

[name]Sibella[/name] seems more streamlined than [name]Isabella[/name].

i think it would be fine - they are similar and might sometimes be mistaken, but i fyou love it then i would use it - i think it would be worth explaining once in awhile for a name i loved

I think it’s really pretty. I do think she’ll end up correcting people who call her [name]Isabella[/name], but it’s an easy name to pronounce once people know the name. And people reading it will get it right away.

Another option: I came across the name Sibila recently and thought it was also really pretty, and would avoid the nickname [name]Bella[/name].

I think it might get mistaken for [name]Isabella[/name] sometimes. That being said, I really love the name, [name]Sibella[/name], and I think it’s a very pretty name. I suppose your daughter might get tired of correcting people if it happens quite often. My sister has a name that often gets mistaken for a different name. She has started using her nickname professionally in order to avoid this problem. You daughter would always have the more ubiquitous “[name]Bella[/name]” to fall back on if she decides to. I know you don’t like this nickname, but I think it might be hard to avoid.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I’ m really glad that you guys like it too. I love it so much that I think I would be able to get past the occasional correction. I just would not want it to be a constant thing. I don’t think any name is worth a lifetime of annoyance and correction, no matter how great it is.

No, I got it from a magazine. I think it was Martha Stewart. What celeb named their baby Sibella?

I have to say when I say it I do hear [name]Isabella[/name] :/. But if it doesn’t bother you than go for it.//

I think [name]Sibella[/name] is lovely! Have you considered the [name]Sybella[/name] spelling? I think it differentiates more from [name]Isabella[/name]. I was actually just thinking about [name]Sybella[/name] the other day, haha, I love it. Although I don’t think I could give up my beloved [name]Isabelle[/name]. :frowning: But I think [name]Sybella[/name]/[name]Sibella[/name] is great for someone looking for an [name]Isabella[/name] alternative.

I love [name]Sibella[/name]! I first heard the name when [name]Eric[/name] [name]Winter[/name] and [name]Roselyn[/name] [name]Sanchez[/name] chose [name]Sibella[/name] [name]Rose[/name] for their daughter, which was lovely.

I think your daughter might get mistaken for [name]Isabella[/name] at times, but the s in [name]Isabella[/name] and the s in [name]Sibella[/name] have different sounds, so it shouldn’t be confusing.

Hey @ashthedreamer, thanks for the suggestion. I was toying with that spelling, but I have a bit of a thing when it comes to putting “y’s” where normally there is an “i”. In this case I know it is a valid spelling so it would not be too bad. It’s just a mental thing I need to get past. I was also thinking about the slight variation of Sebilla.

@susan.n I have never heard of [name]Eric[/name] [name]Winter[/name] or [name]Roselyn[/name] [name]Sanchez[/name], but I like their taste in names!

Whoops, they used the Sebella spelling. But it’s still beautiful!

I love the name [name]Sibella[/name], name of my little cousin. Lots of people mistake her for [name]Isabella[/name], I think they are very distinctive. My friend always spells it Sebella, and some spell it [name]Sybella[/name], but just [name]Sibella[/name] is awesome, with [name]Bella[/name], [name]Bella[/name] boo, or just Boo as a nn.

I love the name [name]Sibella[/name]. I’m not personally a fan of [name]Isabella[/name], but I think [name]Sibella[/name] is a beautiful name. I don’t think it’s too similar, but I wouldn’t use [name]Bella[/name] as a nickname.
