Sibling character names

What are your thoughts on
[name]Cosima[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name] and
[name]Neoma[/name]

as sisters?

I’m not sure how to pronounce any of those!!! (This can be an issue…)

They all seem to fit the same style, so it would make sense that they’d be sisters, so that works.

[name]Elspeth[/name] is vintage and Biblical to me, strong and sturdy.
[name]Cosima[/name] is a little more frilly, a bit more flirty.
[name]Neoma[/name] looks like a made-up variant of [name]Naomi[/name].

I don’t think they work together all that well, sorry.

[name]Elspeth[/name] seems a bit of an odd one out. It’s sweet and more firm that the airy, romantic Cosmia or the odd and eclectic [name]Neoma[/name]. Cosmia and [name]Neoma[/name] might work, but not with [name]Elspeth[/name].

(It’s [name]Cosima[/name])

I agree that they don’t completely fit, but you can name one kid [name]Ruth[/name]-[name]Anne[/name] and the other Azulla, so how alike the names are really isn’t that much of an issue. Not all parents have a particular [i]theme[i] to what they name their kids. It all depends on the characters.

I agree. [name]Cosima[/name] and [name]Neoma[/name] make a really cool subset, but [name]Elspeth[/name] gives off a more sturdy, sensible, old-fashioned sort of vibe - attractive, but doesn’t fit in with the other two.

I hear (or rather, see) this name around here a lot: [name]Ariadne[/name]. I don’t know how to pronounce it, can anyone help me??? (Sorry, I know that’s somewhat unrelated to the subject, but I’ve been wonder, and calypso’s signature reminded me)

Back to the subject: I think if the author likes the names, go with it! It isn’t about the reader’s opinion, it’s the character. If the name fits the character, and it’s a well-described, awesome character, then the reader will learn to love them no matter the name. (Also, as I said before, not all parents have a pattern or theme in their naming. I know someone with kids name [name]Audra[/name] and [name]Liesel[/name], and those don’t sound particularly similar to me!)

CosiMA, [name]Neo[/name]MA and [name]Elspeth[/name] don’t quite match. Style and endings.
[name]Anhma[/name]
[name]Fatima[/name]
[name]Lahoma[/name]
[name]Ozma[/name]

@stardust17 : It’s pronounced [name]Air[/name]-ee-[name]AD[/name](the ‘a’ is pronounced as in ‘apple’ and ‘[name]Asher[/name]’) - nee. At least, that’s how I pronounce it.

Sorry about the double post, I seem to have accidentally hit the post button :).

Anyway, maybe you could try [name]Elsa[/name] instead of [name]Elspeth[/name]?
Here are some other suggestions -

[name]Cosima[/name], [name]Neoma[/name], and [name]Acacia[/name]/[name]Acasia[/name]
[name]Cosima[/name], [name]Neoma[/name], and [name]Arcadia[/name]
[name]Cosima[/name], [name]Neoma[/name], and [name]Alessia[/name]/[name]Alessa[/name]
[name]Cosima[/name], [name]Neoma[/name], and [name]Aria[/name]
[name]Cosima[/name], [name]Neoma[/name], and [name]Electra[/name]

But if you really love those names, and they fit your characters, go ahead and use them. Most readers probably neither notice nor care about the names, much less sibsets, in a story (speaking from experience here - both my family and my friends are all voracious readers, but I’m the only one who gives a cent what the characters are called, haha)

I like [name]Elsa[/name] better than [name]Elspeth[/name], too. Good nickname potential for both of those, I’d have a hard time coming up with a nickname for [name]Neoma[/name].

@calypso, I like the name [name]Electra[/name], too! [name]Don[/name]'t think I’d use it in this case, though…doesn’t seem to fit the trend

[name]Neoma[/name] nn [name]Nia[/name]? That’s all I can think of.

Yeah, not the best nickname material! (Not saying that all names need to have nicknames, but those just seem a bit lengthy not to!)
