Sibling for Oscar

XP from Sibling Names forum (seems pretty quiet over there!)

[name_m]Just[/name_m] found out we are expecting baby #2! DS is [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] and last name is long, Italian and sounds like Pannobello.

Our name criteria:

  1. Must be unpopular, but familiar (hopefully no other kids in their class, but also don’t have to spell it out for everyone they meet)
  2. Must be max. 3 syllables (last name is a mouthful)
  3. Must sound good in English and [name_m]French[/name_m] (we live in [name_m]Quebec[/name_m])

[name_m]Will[/name_m] be paired with a Welsh middle name. Boy middle name TBD, girl would be [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] (muh-van-wee) after my grandmother.

Some names that I like…

GIRLS
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_u]Clare[/name_u] (my mom’s maiden name, but a cousin has already used it for a middle name so feels a bit less special)
[name_f]Anne[/name_f] (but I don’t like the way it sounds with [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f])
[name_f]Giada[/name_f] (bad match for [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]?)
[name_f]Gloria[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f] (DH’s grandma)

BOYS
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] (ending too similar to be paired with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]?)
[name_m]Alec[/name_m]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]George[/name_m] (was always my #2 boy name, but damn [name_m]Will[/name_m] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f])
[name_m]Alfred[/name_m] (love the nickname potential here)

So what do you think of our list? What other names should be considered? Sibling pairing is very important to me.

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] is lovely, and I think [name_u]Jude[/name_u] is perfect with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. Maybe [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] or [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]?

[name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] is my favourite for a girl.

Other ideas…
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m]
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_m]Pierce[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_u]Finn[/name_u] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_m]Jenson[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m]

I love [name_f]Vera[/name_f] and [name_f]Gloria[/name_f]!

I like [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] and [name_f]Vera[/name_f] with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. They all have a different feel though soI guess you have to decide what you want to do stylistically.

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f]: Classic
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_f]Vera[/name_f]: Vintage
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_f]Gloria[/name_f]: Kind of Hipsterish

Girls
#1 Choice: [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] & [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is so neglected as a first name. I love it!
#2 Choice: [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] & [name_f]Vera[/name_f] [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] [name_f]Vera[/name_f] is uncommon but familiar like you said, easy to spell and fits with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]. Great choice.
#3 Choice: [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] & [name_u]Clare[/name_u] [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f] Does your cousin live near you/associate with you a lot? If not I would not worry about her using it in the
middle spot if it’s your mom’s maiden name & you love it.

[name_f]Giada[/name_f] - doesn’t “go” with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], to me. [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] - also pretty and under-used. A bit much with [name_f]Myfanwy[/name_f], to me.

Boys (w/examples of Welsh middle names)
#1 Choice: [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] & [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] [name_m]Ioan[/name_m] [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] is so cute - and doesn’t have the same high popularity in [name_m]Quebec[/name_m] as in the UK.
#2 Choice: [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] & [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Maxen[/name_m] [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] & [name_u]Jude[/name_u] fit so well.
#3 Choice: [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] & [name_m]George[/name_m] Talfryn [name_m]Will[/name_m] & [name_f]Kate[/name_f] don’t own it! I mean, nowadays, people named [name_m]William[/name_m] are not asked if their parents were
fans of the British royals. I feel [name_m]George[/name_m] is also too universally familiar to have it really be a problem.

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] is a great name but wouldn’t be my choice because of the ending. [name_m]Alec[/name_m] is also handsome but I feel it might clash a bit w/your last name. (?)

Congratulations to you.

With [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], my favorites from your list are [name_f]Gloria[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], and [name_m]George[/name_m]. Some more possibilities:

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and

[name_m]Alan[/name_m]/[name_m]Allen[/name_m]
[name_m]David[/name_m]
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
[name_m]Gilbert[/name_m]
[name_u]Howard[/name_u]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m]
[name_m]Isaac[/name_m]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_u]Stanley[/name_u]

[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Avis[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Faye[/name_f]
[name_f]Helen[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]
[name_f]Tess[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Vera[/name_f] and [name_m]Alfred[/name_m] go best with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m].
