We’ve narrowed it down (we think) to these five names for our boy choices. I don’t want to get too themey with the Old Testament trend (as much as I love many of those names) which is my big misgiving with [name]Zebulon[/name]. Everyone seems to think [name]Ambrose[/name] is too girly sounding although at the moment I think its my personal favorite. I’m worried the other three names are too clipped or don’t feel stylistically similar enough. We’ve been through gobs of names and my DH has very little patience with the process so I’m not sure what to do if we can’t make one of these five work.
Our last name is [name]Armstrong[/name] and the big brothers are: [name]Reuben[/name] [name]Blythe[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name] [name]Wilder[/name]. If we have a girl our top three favorites at the moment are [name]Una[/name] [name]Scarlett[/name], [name]Galatea[/name] [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Phaedra[/name] Lantana.
Got any helpful words for us? We’re still working on middle names to go with these boy choices.
I love [name]Ambrose[/name]–it flows well with [name]Reuben[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name] as well. [name]Zebulon[/name] would be a distant second for me. I agree that the others feel too short and modern for his brothers. Here are a few other fn thoughts:
[name]Reid[/name] or [name]Keith[/name]. [name]Ambrose[/name]. Isn’t that a girl name? Also why aren’t you going Biblcial. [name]Reuben[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name] are clearly Biblcial. I think you should keep that theme going.
[name]St[/name]. [name]Ambrose[/name] is a revered [name]MALE[/name] Catholic saint. So, it fits perfectly with the religious/ antique feel of [name]Reuben[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name].
[name]Hi[/name], [name]Ambrose[/name] is my favourite from your list but your sons [name]Reuben[/name] & [name]Gideon[/name] have old Hebrew Biblical names so perhaps you should consider naming your third child something along the same theme. The name that popped into my head when I saw [name]Reuben[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name] is [name]SOLOMON[/name]. Other male name choices from the Bible:
[name]Abraham[/name]
[name]Eli[/name] [name]Perry[/name] (I love this combo!)
[name]Ethan[/name]
[name]Josiah[/name]
[name]Malachi[/name]
[name]Zebedee[/name]
[name]Tobias[/name]
[name]Jabez[/name]
[name]Jubal[/name]
[name]Jeremiah[/name]
[name]Emmanuel[/name]
[name]Gabriel[/name]
[name]Jonah[/name]/[name]Jonas[/name]
[name]Samson[/name]
[name]Samuel[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]
[name]Shem[/name]
[name]Simeon[/name]
[name]Ezekiel[/name]
[name]Isaiah[/name]
[name]Enoch[/name]
There are not as many choices for girls names in the Bible but a few of my favourites are [name]Abigail[/name], [name]Delilah[/name], [name]Dinah[/name], [name]Esther[/name], [name]Hannah[/name],[name]Jemima[/name], [name]Naomi[/name] and [name]Ruth[/name].
If I HAD to pick from your list, I would go with [name]Ambrose[/name]. I do agree, though, that it sounds a bit feminine (it has [name]Rose[/name] in it). The other names on your list, I’m afraid are just too weak to stand up to [name]Gideon[/name] and [name]Reuben[/name] (which are AMAZING names, by the way). There are so many other wonderful biblical names that would fit here, but I respect your decision to go in another direction and avoid a theme. Plus, I don’t think you have to use a biblical name to find something with equal substance and strength. I [name]DO[/name], however, think you have to find something with equal substance and strenth and so far, your non-biblical names list isn’t really doing it. Some suggestions:
[name]August[/name]
[name]Elias[/name]
[name]Quentin[/name] (another n-ending name, which you may or may not like; I think it works)
[name]Ajax[/name] (not for everyone)
Caelum
[name]Victor[/name]
I actually like [name]Zebulon[/name] with your boys…if you’re worried about going too OT…you could go with the NT and name him [name]Zebadee[/name] or Zebadiah
Iknow a couple of guys called [name]Ambrose[/name], and it’s more popular still in [name]Ireland[/name]. I have a [name]Zebedee[/name] and I love his name, I also know a little Zephan, short for [name]Zephaniah[/name]. Certainly [name]Zeb[/name] or Zeph are great nicknames too. I think you have to like a name in all it’s forms as you can’t control what it will get shortened to in the playground!
I’m putting my vote in for [name]Zebulun[/name]. I love this name, it’s on my long list. I know you didn’t ask for more suggestions, so feel free to ignore the following (LOL!):
[name]Amos[/name]
[name]Asher[/name]
[name]Abram[/name] / [name]Abraham[/name]
[name]Caleb[/name]
[name]Elijah[/name] / [name]Eli[/name]
[name]Ezekiel[/name] (I know a little [name]Ezekiel[/name] who goes by [name]Zeke[/name] or Zekey. He’s adorable!)
[name]Ezra[/name]
[name]Hosea[/name]
[name]Josiah[/name]
[name]Judah[/name]
[name]Levi[/name]
[name]Moses[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]
Not that I am totally partial or anything but, I named my son Zepheniah (I switched the second vowel from an a to e) and a couple of years later I love the name even more. I was a little bit nervous about using such an unusual name but, it really is a strong OT name. The nicknames ranging from Zephen to [name]Zephyr[/name] are awfully fun and cool and I love having a little Z (which can be even be turned into [name]Zed[/name]-The French pronunciation of Z).
When I saw [name]Reuben[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name] together, I automatically thought of [name]Abram[/name] for a brother. [name]Reuben[/name], [name]Gideon[/name], and [name]Abram[/name] are perfect together. Of your choices I like [name]Ambrose[/name] the best. [name]Kent[/name] and [name]Reid[/name] don’t have the same feel as [name]Reuben[/name] and [name]Gideon[/name] at all. I could see [name]Keith[/name] and [name]Zebulon[/name] working but I don’t think they’re quite right. [name]Zebulon[/name] sounds like a sci fi character to me.
[name]Ambrose[/name] has always been a boys’ name. It is definitely a masculine name. [name]Ambrosia[/name] is the feminine form.
