Sibling for Sawyer

[name]Baby[/name] girl due in [name]May[/name]: little sister to [name]Sawyer[/name], 17 mos (boy)

One of the most important things for me is that the name be original and unique: I don’t want anything common, ordinary.

I like occupational names and surnames as first names; I seem to like unisex (or tomboy) names; a ‘y’ is a bonus but not something I’m hellbent on.

One thing I like about [name]Sawyer[/name] (Soy-er) is it’s not pronounced how it’s spelled. I like the name [name]Lincoln[/name] (for a boy) for the same reason.

Middle names I’m considering are [name]Ray[/name] and [name]Hollis[/name] but I don’t think mn should influence first names, so this is secondary.

Below is my working list - I’m going to comment for each so you can get a feel how I think which might help brainstorm additional names. Thanks in advance!

[name]Grayson[/name] - I don’t mind the -son ending and love my first name as a middle (family) name with [name]Grayson[/name] ([name]Hollis[/name])
[name]Harper[/name] - Has a literary reference like [name]Sawyer[/name]
[name]Parker[/name] - My wife doesn’t like [name]Parker[/name] for a girl (I do)
[name]Sierra[/name] - Means ‘saw’ in Spanish, interesting with [name]Sawyer[/name]
[name]Dylan[/name] - Popular for girls; wife doesn’t like
[name]Kennedy[/name] - I think [name]Kennedy[/name] is cute, but wife doesn’t like
[name]Mackenzie[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the name but feel it’s too popular
[name]Rhys[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this spelling but ultra masculine Welsh name, apparently
[name]Reese[/name] - I get tunnel vision on Mrs. Witherspoon here
[name]McKinley[/name] - Reference to mtn too strong
[name]Britt[/name] - Too masculine, not special
[name]Darcy[/name] - I think I only like this name because it conjures Pride & Prejudice
[name]Zoey[/name] - Neighbor has daughter named [name]Zoe[/name], so this is out
[name]Madeleine[/name] - Cute but I’m neutral on all three spellings
[name]Madeline[/name] -
[name]Madelyn[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t like this spelling
[name]Helen[/name] - Only classic, traditional name I ever include but too common
[name]Matilda[/name] - Like the name but feels too old-fashioned
[name]Hayden[/name] - Meh

You defiantly have a wide variety of names that you like, and I think thats really cool. On your list I really love [name]Kennedy[/name], [name]Reese[/name], [name]Grayson[/name] (I would spell it Gracen for a girl though), [name]Zoey[/name], and [name]Madelyn[/name]. I think that these names are just perfect for a little girl! I think that my favorite would be [name]Kennedy[/name], I think it fits in really well with [name]Sawyer[/name]!
If you are open to suggestions, I think that [name]Brynn[/name] would be a good match also. I think that it is a really beautiful name for a girl, and on top of that it’s unisex and sounds so cute with [name]Sawyer[/name]!
What about these names:
[name]Avery[/name]
[name]Ryan[/name]
[name]Emery[/name]
[name]Jaden[/name]/[name]Jayden[/name]
[name]Hadley[/name]
[name]Brennan[/name]
[name]Emerson[/name]
[name]Addison[/name]
[name]Anniston[/name]
[name]Mason[/name]

[name]Hope[/name] that I could help you

Thanks Cuddles - I appreciate your feedback. I also like [name]Kennedy[/name] as a sibling w/ [name]Sawyer[/name] but my wife doesn’t like the name. Unfortunately my wife isn’t as into names as I am so it’s hard to have a dialogue which is important in the journey to find the right name. I was hoping this thread might spark some new suggestions but so far just a few views and only your reply. Thanks again.

[name]Hi[/name]… just thought i’d point out that [name]Sierra[/name] also means Mountains… or mountain range is Spanish! ( a bit prettier than saw)

A few suggestions…

[name]How[/name] about Kinnley or [name]Kinsley[/name] instead of [name]McKinley[/name]?

[name]Paisley[/name]
[name]Finley[/name]
[name]Jamison[/name]
[name]Jamese[/name] (pronounced [name]James[/name])
[name]Elliot[/name]
[name]Riley[/name]
[name]Blair[/name]
[name]Delaney[/name]
[name]Sullivan[/name]
[name]Ainsley[/name]
[name]Cyprus[/name]
[name]Presley[/name]

[name]Hope[/name] you like one of theses!

Roots, mountain ranges were given the name [name]Sierra[/name] because of their ‘saw-like’ appearance but yes it means both saw and mountains. My wife is Spanish and we live in Spain - [name]Sierra[/name] is the only Spanish name on my list right now. I like your suggestions, gracias!

hahahaha…And here I am giving a spanish lesson! ( i used to live in mexico)… [name]Glad[/name] you like some of the names!

I know two little girls Greysen and [name]Parker[/name] and have always thought they had such cool names. Those are my two favorites on your list. [name]Harper[/name] is really cute too, but I think its super trendy right now. I also like the suggestion of [name]Brynn[/name]. The only name that comes to mind that hasn’t already been listed when it comes to not common or ordinary is [name]Perri[/name]. I knew a girl named that, and it also fits your surname requirement. Good luck!

There is a [name]Grayson[/name] on top chef this season that is a girl. After watching the whole season it has really grown on me.

I like [name]Sierra[/name] with [name]Sawyer[/name]! Im also biased b/c its my DD’s middle name bit I spell it [name]Ciara[/name].

Since you like [name]Mackenzie[/name] and [name]McKinley[/name], how about [name]McKenna[/name]?

other suggestions…
[name]Andie[/name]
[name]Landon[/name] ([name]Landyn[/name])
[name]Sydney[/name]
[name]Kayden[/name]
[name]Aislinn[/name] (like [name]Ashlyn[/name])
[name]Montanna[/name]

what about [name]Kenzie[/name] instead of [name]Kennedy[/name]?

Full disclosure: Top Chef is how I learned of the name [name]Grayson[/name] too! When I saw the name in the first episode this season I noted it and put it on my list. I don’t love that that’s where I discovered the name but I wouldn’t exclude it just because of that.

This is getting personal but one of my idols growing up was [name]Amy[/name] [name]Ray[/name] of the [name]Indigo[/name] Girls. I don’t love [name]Ray[/name] as a first name for a girl; [name]Amy[/name] is too common. But if [name]Ray[/name] works I would like to use it as a middle name to pay tribute to someone who has had such a positive influence in my life. It has always struck me that [name]Grayson[/name] nestles the letters ‘ray’, and I love my first name as a middle name with [name]Grayson[/name]: [name]Grayson[/name] [name]Hollis[/name]. So far pretty lukewarm from the couple of people I have shared this with, though.

But my wife and I are big Top Chef fans. It’s funny because our son’s name is [name]Sawyer[/name] [name]James[/name] - and we’ve had a lot of people comment that we must be rabid Lost fans, but neither of us has ever watched Lost. We chose [name]Sawyer[/name] because we met in the southeast US, I was born and raised there, and I like southern names. My wife is from [name]Santiago[/name] de Compostela in northwest Spain; St. [name]James[/name] is the patron saint of [name]Santiago[/name] where [name]Sawyer[/name] was born - so we chose [name]James[/name] for good luck and to tell that story.

I love the name [name]Sawyer[/name]! I like the name [name]Grayson[/name] but to me it seems odd to use it for a girl as it means “the son of the bailiff”. To go with [name]Sawyer[/name] I like [name]Matilda[/name], it isnt old fashioned at all in fact it is a top 100 name in Australia and the UK thanks to [name]Matilda[/name] Ledger, a very hip choice, the US will catch up with the trend soon I’m sure. I also love [name]Dylan[/name], [name]Harper[/name], [name]Darcy[/name] and [name]Parker[/name]- all very cool on a girl. My least favourite at the [name]Kenzie[/name]/[name]Kennady[/name]/Mckinsley/etc names they are all so over used compared to the lovely [name]Sawyer[/name].

ok first of all if you want something that is original forget [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Madeline[/name]…those are used every way in every town and rest assured your daughter will have a couple of those in her class…I teach dance at 6 different schools and while the 5 year olds aren’t named that, their little sisters are! Plus how many times have you heard “[name]Maddy[/name]!” on the play ground…a million.
I love the male names for girls. Gracen is a great alternative to the typical [name]Grace[/name] you hear a lot these days…and you could call her [name]Sonny[/name] for short…or sunny instead of [name]Gracie[/name].
just wanted to throw my two cents in there …

+1 your comments thanks

I was really hoping to generate new names by sharing my working list but most are picking their favorites from my list, which is fine.

Last night I thought of [name]Bryce[/name] out of the blue, but woke up and didn’t like it as much. Anyway thanks again I agree with most of your comments.

oh ok sorry I thought you were giving the list of names you were kicking around…

ok how do you feel about another S name…

like [name]Sailor[/name], or [name]Saylor[/name]

what about [name]Raygen[/name] or [name]Reagan[/name] (obviously not an S)

[name]Shellaine[/name]

[name]Presley[/name]

Ruehl

those are just some unique names I’ve heard recently that have a more masculine spin to them

[name]Sailor[/name] is interesting and I have thought of it before, actually.

Random but I love the name [name]Summer[/name] with mn [name]Ray[/name], [name]Summer[/name] [name]Ray[/name]

[name]Sawyer[/name] always sounds like the quintessential boy’s boy to me, probably because o the book, and [name]Sierra[/name] sounds like she could keep up with him. [name]How[/name] about instead of [name]Britt[/name] go with a [name]Brynn[/name], Welsh meaning “hill”, or a [name]Deryn[/name], Welsh meaning “bird”? [name]Matilda[/name] is becoming fashionable again and is also a great book by [name]Roald[/name] Dahl. Personally, I always can’t get over the “son” at the end of a name; it just screams boy to me.

[name]Sawyer[/name]'s little sister must be named Scotlyn!

I was just walking home thinking I need a good Scottish name, since our ancestors are from [name]Scotland[/name]. Scotlyn, hmm.

Hmm, of your list, I like [name]Kennedy[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name] most. [name]Kennedy[/name] has that clean, more modern feel that complements modern [name]Sawyer[/name]. I love [name]Matilda[/name] with it because of the literary references, spunky sound, and its great nicknames. If you like [name]Reese[/name] but think of Ms. Witherspoon, you should consider spelling it [name]Reece[/name]. I find [name]Parker[/name], [name]Dylan[/name], [name]Hayden[/name], and [name]Grayson[/name] far more masculine than [name]Britt[/name] (I think all four of those first names would make great brothers for [name]Sawyer[/name]!). While I see the literary references with [name]Harper[/name], I don’t like that both names end in -er.

What I love about [name]Sawyer[/name] are the literary reference, the history, and its rough-and-tumble, happy, boyish charm. For your daughter I wouldn’t go too masculine since [name]Sawyer[/name] is heading in a unisex direction. I would also look for a rooted, mildly [name]Americana[/name] sort of name with a little spunk  More suggestions (sorry for repeats!) would include:

For their literary/author references:
[name]Flannery[/name] (nn [name]Annie[/name], Flicka, [name]Faye[/name]) - I [name]LOVE[/name] this with Saywer! It’s got a masculine edge like [name]Kennedy[/name], but was worn by an incredible woman.
[name]Ellis[/name] (nn [name]Elle[/name] and [name]Ellie[/name], Lissy)
[name]Hadley[/name]
[name]Zadie[/name] (Z, [name]Addie[/name]) - I think she was a [name]Zaida[/name] technically
[name]Daphne[/name]
Kincaid
[name]Louisa[/name] ([name]Lulu[/name], [name]Lula[/name]) or [name]May[/name] or [name]Alcott[/name] ([name]Allie[/name])
[name]Virginia[/name] ([name]Ginny[/name])
[name]Ramona[/name] - I love this with [name]Sawyer[/name], too.
[name]Lane[/name] - technically he’s a male [name]Salinger[/name] character, but I think it works great
[name]Eliza[/name] - less obviously [name]Austen[/name], but still really spunky with a great heroine
[name]Ruby[/name] - cute with [name]Sawyer[/name]
[name]Willa[/name] - I like how the W ties them together; I think this has that slightly Western adventurous vibe, too

Also…
[name]Bellamy[/name] (way to get to [name]Amy[/name] that’s less obvious)
[name]Briony[/name] or [name]Bryony[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Talitha[/name] ([name]Tali[/name] is cute)
[name]Winola[/name] or [name]Winona[/name] ([name]Winnie[/name], [name]Win[/name], [name]Nola[/name] or [name]Lola[/name])
[name]Teagan[/name]
[name]Kendall[/name]
[name]Adaline[/name] or [name]Adeline[/name] or just [name]Ada[/name]
[name]Lila[/name]
[name]Quinn[/name]
[name]Tatum[/name] (a bit masculine for [name]Sawyer[/name], I think, but it might be right up your alley)
[name]Piper[/name] (I don’t mind this -er name, and it resembles [name]Parker[/name] with less of a masculine edge)
[name]Marin[/name]
[name]June[/name]
[name]Tessa[/name] - I think this is pretty with [name]Sawyer[/name]. If you go with [name]Theresa[/name]/[name]Teresa[/name], you could use [name]Tessa[/name] or [name]Reese[/name] as nicknames!
[name]Molly[/name]
[name]Emeline[/name]/[name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Carolina[/name]
[name]Ellery[/name]
[name]Holly[/name] or [name]Hollie[/name] (to use [name]Hollis[/name] a different way)
[name]Wren[/name]
[name]Juniper[/name]
[name]Robin[/name]
[name]Emery[/name] (also a little on the masculine side for my taste here, but hey)

Sorry for the edit (I just saw your last post): I would really recommend against Scotlyn. (I think it looks made-up–sorry!). But some of those above are Scottish plus these: [name]Bonnie[/name], [name]Ainsley[/name], Aila, [name]Blair[/name], [name]Finola[/name], [name]Greer[/name] (like this a lot with [name]Sawyer[/name]), [name]Iona[/name], [name]Isla[/name], [name]Kenna[/name] and [name]McKenna[/name], [name]Kirsten[/name], [name]Mairi[/name], [name]Paisley[/name], and [name]Rona[/name].

What works for you and what doesn’t? We can tailor in a certain direction…
