Soo, we named our daughter [name]Sidonie[/name] because it was feminine, european, and very uncommon, and I loved the quirky androgyny of her nickname, Sido. Now we’re searching for a name for her future brother that has similar qualities; masculine without being too macho, a little classic, but still different. I like old-man names that have cute little-boy nickname potential, and I also like Scandinavian and Slavic boy names a lot. Nothing overly French because we’re not French, and gaving both our kids French names when it’s not our nationality seems strange. Also, we live in Germany so it’s a plus if the name works in [name]German[/name] but isn’t “[name]German[/name]” — haha if that makes any sense! For instance, I know of 3 baby Wolfgangs in the US, but [name]Wolfgang[/name] to my friends here sounds ridiculous, it’s sort of like everyone’s dad’s name. Oh, and nothing with the “ore” sound like [name]Soren[/name] or [name]Rory[/name] or [name]Lorne[/name], because it doen’t work with our last name.
At the moment, my favorites are [name]Alvin[/name] nn [name]Alvie[/name], [name]Mercer[/name] nn [name]Merce[/name], [name]Ivan[/name], [name]Teodor[/name], Antonin…and like a zillion others. Help me find just the right name please. I would love to hear all your wildest suggestions!
Wow, what a fun post! You’re bound to get some fun suggestions. Since I live in the US, [name]Alvin[/name] makes me think of [name]Alvin[/name] and the Chipmunks, but I love [name]Mercer[/name] (although apparently it is French). I love [name]Silvain[/name] and [name]Silas[/name] from your signature. Are you avoiding them because of the double “s” with [name]Sidonie[/name]?
[name]Teodor[/name] is fun, but I prefer the soft “Th” [name]Theo[/name] version better. I don’t know much about [name]German[/name] names or sounds though.
Other suggestions:
[name]Soren[/name]
[name]Adrian[/name]
[name]Quentin[/name]
No, I actually have [name]Silvain[/name] in my sig because it’s similar to [name]Sylvie[/name], which was my top girl’s name. I guess its just as well that it’s a boy because [name]Sylvie[/name] is getting insanely popular though!
We pronounce [name]Sidonie[/name] in the frenchy way, SEE-do-nee. So a [name]Sil[/name] or [name]Sy[/name] beginning is not out of the question.
[name]Ah[/name] but [name]Teo[/name] (tay-o) as a nickname is so cute! I love [name]Teodor[/name] in contrast to [name]Theodore[/name]. Th is sometimes a difficult sound for [name]German[/name] speakers. I’m not so concerned with pleasing [name]German[/name] relatives or anything like that (we have none, and we probably won’t live here forever) but I do worry about everyone saying his name wrong in preschool etc.
I love [name]Soren[/name]! So much! But like I mentioned in my first post, our last name has an “ore” sound and so it sounds too rhyming.
Volk is so cool, but it means “people” in [name]German[/name].
I love [name]Liev[/name], [name]Clark[/name], [name]Leland[/name], & [name]Lyle[/name]. But I think [name]Gregor[/name] is nicer than [name]Gregory[/name] and would pick [name]Willem[/name] over [name]Wilhelm[/name].
Some other names we’ve thrown around lately are [name]Niels[/name], [name]Orville[/name], & [name]Klement[/name].
Well, then [name]Silvain[/name] gets my top vote. I love the version I’ve seen in the US: [name]Sylvan[/name]. It feels shakespearean or something. I wonder if there are any other Adjective Word names though… but that’s another issue.
Here are some others:
[name]Alston[/name]
[name]Aldon[/name]
[name]Garren[/name]
Aidric(k)
[name]Alaric[/name]
[name]Mathis[/name]
Strange enough, I met an [name]Orville[/name] just tonight! He was so handsome he really made the name attractive. But like [name]Alvin[/name] it has American associations attached to it- here [name]Orville[/name] Redenbocker is a popcorn brand that for some reason overshadowed the name for me until just tonight!
[name]Ludwig[/name]? No, that might be too [name]German[/name].
What about [name]Alexander[/name]? [name]Sidonie[/name] and [name]Alexander[/name] sounds precious.
