Sibling name for Martin Robert???

My husband and I cannot agree on names. We did not agree on a name for our son until he was 3 days old. As we begin to consider names for our second child we are at an impasse, again!

Here are the guidelines we want to honor when naming our child:

  1. one name is after a family member
  2. not too popular or trendy, but needs to be mainstream
  3. [name]Saint[/name] name

[name]Martin[/name]=[name]Saint[/name], [name]Robert[/name]= husband’s grandpa

Family names:
[name]Virginia[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Diana[/name], [name]Eileen[/name], [name]Cain[/name], [name]Harvey[/name], [name]Charles[/name], [name]Francis[/name]

I don’t have any new names to suggest, but I think that disagreements between parents over naming can be easily resolved. In fact, that’s probably why middle names were invented; each person gets a name and everyone is happy.

In your case, the only name in common was: [name]Frances[/name]/[name]Francine[/name]. Might I suggest compromising with a name like [name]Francesca[/name], that has the same feel but doesn’t feel like one partner is winning over the other.

Another way to compromise is having one parent get the first name and the other the middle. And switch on and off. For example:
Boys: [name]Nathaniel[/name] [name]Harvey[/name], [name]Miles[/name] [name]Cain[/name], [name]Solomon[/name] [name]Finn[/name].
Girls: [name]Olive[/name] [name]Harriet[/name], [name]Francine[/name] (or [name]Francesca[/name]) [name]Clare[/name].

Another way is to have two middle names. That way the first name can be a family name and you each get to choose a name you like for the middle. For example:
[name]Charles[/name] [name]Isaac[/name] [name]Henry[/name] [name]Calvin[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name] [name]Clare[/name] [name]Harriot[/name] [name]Calvin[/name]
These names can get kind of lengthy, but at least everyone is appeased. These names also incorporate family names and your preferences in a nice way so nobody’s feelings get hurt because their name didn’t get picked.

I really hope that choosing a name isn’t causing stress on you both at such a critical time. My strongest suggestion would be to stop arguing, if you even are, and focus on the miracle that is about to happen. Focusing on the big picture also might illuminate name options that you’ve never thought of before and can agree on. Good luck with everything.
