What do we all think about the length of names in sibsets?
For example, if you had a daughter with a long name like ‘[name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]’ could you give their siblings short names like ‘[name_f]Kate[/name_f]’ or ‘[name_u]Finn[/name_u]’ or should all of their names be similar in length?
My thoughts are that provided they fit the same ‘theme’ then names of any length should work but I’d love to know your thoughts and maybe start a list of short/long sibling names that work together.
I have the same opinon as you. [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] would surprise me, but something like [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] and [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] or [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] and [name_f]Maude[/name_f] wouldn’t, just like how I wouldn’t be surprised by a [name_f]Kate[/name_f] with a sister called [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Abigail[/name_f]. It’s all about style.
I agree with all of the above. It’s also worth remembering that the siblings won’t always be introduced together. When they meet people, they won’t say, “[name_m]Hi[/name_m] I’m [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], my sister is [name_f]Kate[/name_f]…” etc.
I think I see length as a matter of full vs nicknames. So [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] wouldn’t work for me since [name_f]Kate[/name_f] has the longer form [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. However, I don’t have a problem with [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] and [name_f]Eve[/name_f] in terms of length because [name_f]Eve[/name_f] is not tied to a longer name. Though I agree that stylistically/thematically, the names should go together.
I think the style/theme thing makes a difference. I also think gender is important. I wouldn’t bat an eye at [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m] but [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m] stands out.
Food for thought if you’re a nickname-y person: I’m one of four. Three of us have short, two syllable names that could be nicknames alla [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. The other one has a long, four syllable name that we shorten to a two syllable nickname alla [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] nn Guin/etc. She has never really gone by the full name despite my parents wanting that to be her name. My mom says now they’d have just named her the nickname if they had known that’s all they’d be calling her.
