Hey! I’m not expecting (I just had my baby boy 3 weeks ago) but I am hoping that one day my son [name]Dev[/name] will have a brother or sister. It’s never too soon to start thinking of names!
My dilemma is the middle name. My husband’s late father was a very much French man named [name]Hugo[/name], and he gave the name [name]Hugo[/name] to both of his sons as a middle. My husband [name]Ben[/name] & I gave our son, [name]Deveraux[/name], [name]Hugo[/name] as a middle name as well. I was wondering if a potential younger brother should have the middle name [name]Hugo[/name] as well. What do you think?
We never really discussed girls’ names, so here’s my list of boys’ names that were potential names for our son [name]Dev[/name]:
[name]Rafael[/name] - my ultimate favorite name.
[name]Dominic[/name]
[name]Andre[/name] - no cutesy nickname like [name]Dev[/name]. It’s fine that it doesn’t have one, but I think it’s expected that if one child has one, so do the siblings.
[name]Maximilien[/name] - it doesn’t really fit with [name]Deveraux[/name], and I don’t love it. [name]Max[/name] does fit with [name]Dev[/name] though.
[name]Benjamin[/name] - my husband [name]Ben[/name] and I agreed that we don’t want a [name]Junior[/name].
[name]Gabriel[/name] - it’s a good name, but it sounds too American for my husband. Also, I don’t like the nickname [name]Gabe[/name] much.
[name]Alain[/name] - I like this name, but [name]Ben[/name]'s not crazy about it.
On girls’ names, we’re hopeless. I like [name]Charlotte[/name], but it doesn’t fit with [name]Deveraux[/name]. I love [name]Cosette[/name], and it’s the name of a character in a [name]Victor[/name] [name]Hugo[/name] book, so it is related to the name [name]Hugo[/name], but it doesn’t seem “name enough” for [name]Ben[/name].
Any ideas on girls’ names?
Thank you so much!
I wouldn’t give son #2 the middle name [name]Hugo[/name] again. He needs a name all his own.
[name]Dominic[/name] has cute nn potential - [name]Dom[/name] or nic
“[name]Maximilien[/name] - it doesn’t really fit with [name]Deveraux[/name], and I don’t love it. [name]Max[/name] does fit with [name]Dev[/name] though.” What about [name]Maxwell[/name]?
What do you think of [name]Sebastian[/name], or [name]Thoreau[/name]?
For girls: It seems like you like the 'tte ending so here are some others
[name]Annette[/name]
Huguette - there’s your [name]Hugo[/name] reference
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Odette[/name]
I think [name]Maximilien[/name] fits great with [name]Deveraux[/name]! What makes you think it doesn’t? [name]Max[/name] and [name]Dev[/name] and great together!
What about [name]Colette[/name] instead of [name]Cosette[/name]?
I certainly don’t think you have to continue to use [name]Hugo[/name] as a middle name. What about [name]Rousseau[/name] for a sibling? Could use nn [name]Roux[/name]; mn’s could be [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Benjamin[/name] or something else. I’ve also always liked the name [name]Loic[/name]. [name]Loic[/name] [name]Rafael[/name]?
Could just use [name]Roux[/name] for a girl’s name, too. [name]Roux[/name] [name]Jacqueline[/name] [jack-leen]. [name]Roux[/name] [name]Bichette[/name]. I also think [name]Cosette[/name] is very pretty.
[name]Cosette[/name] [name]Helene[/name]
[name]Nouvel[/name]
Thank you for the suggestions! I don’t require a [name]Hugo[/name] reference, so I’m kind of glad that you all think it’s okay to not use it as a middle name. I was thinking of possibly using my dad’s name, [name]Charles[/name], as a middle name, but I’m not stuck on it - I just feel like it would be nice to honor both of our fathers equally. I am completely open to using other middle names, though.
I do like the name [name]Sebastian[/name], but I’m not so much a fan of [name]Thoreau[/name] - I feel like a third child would have to have an “O” name also. I like [name]Juliet[/name], but the other -ette names were a bit much for me
I was thinking about it after I posted, and I do think that [name]Maximilien[/name] would go with [name]Deveraux[/name], and the nicknames are really cute together. I don’t like [name]Colette[/name] much, sorry.
I think the name [name]Rousseau[/name] is nice, and I actually like it, but as with [name]Thoreau[/name] I feel like a third child would have to have an “O” name as well. I’m not ruling out [name]Rousseau[/name], though. I really do like that name! I like the name [name]Helene[/name] a lot, maybe even as a first name.
[name]Just[/name] a few other girls’ names that I found nice:
Céline - Very beautiful and cool. Also, when my husband and I first started dating, we watched The Titanic together in the media center at our college.
[name]Mirabelle[/name] - This is a very cute name, but I feel as if she’ll be branded with the nickname [name]Bella[/name], and join the crowd.
[name]Vivienne[/name] - I like this name, and I actually like this French spelling more than the original, but it’s so popular that I feel it wouldn’t fit with the almost unknown [name]Deveraux[/name].
[name]Marguerite[/name] - I’m not crazy about the name, but I think that it is a nice name that it sophisticated but has cute nicknames, too.
Thanks again everyone
I love the name “[name]Clothilde[/name]” for a girl. I’m from [name]Louisiana[/name], and I knew a girl with this name. It sounded so lovely pronounced in the Cajun accent.
