Siblings with essentially the same name

We also fostered twins, Ol!v3r & Ol!v!@. That got confusing real fast, also as they were both used to going by [name_u]Oli[/name_u]. So we would always have to call them by their first names, nicknames just got too much!

It’s not really the same, but on another baby name forum I knew a mom who had a daughter named [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], which always struck me as odd. I know a family where all 3 of their girls all have the same middle name (Elizabeth), too - I sort of wish they would’ve actually USED different variants to make it a little more interesting. Like [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], and [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabet[/name_f] or something. Only other example I can think of are the Bingleys in Pride and Prejudice (so clearly not real life) - I always thought it odd that [name_u]Austen[/name_u] named them [name_u]Charles[/name_u] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] haha.

I find this really interesting! In the case of everyone named with the same first name, are they called by the other name? So would the [name_f]Ana[/name_f] sisters be called [name_f]Catarina[/name_f], [name_f]Filipa[/name_f] and [name_f]Margarida[/name_f]? [name_u]Or[/name_u] is there some other tradition as to what the family members would be known as?

They would probably go by their middles names, yes. In some cases, family and friends would prefer to call them by their first and middle names all the time (that happens mostly when Maria is the first name) or eventually by nicknames, if they have nicknames.

Not exactly what you meant, but my (great?)-grandfather and his brother were both named [name_u]James[/name_u] (they had a few other siblings born in between fortunately — must’ve been confusing!) :upside_down_face:

This is a bit different than what you mean I think but I know of twins named [name_u]Zia[/name_u] and [name_f]Ria[/name_f].

I know of twins named [name_m]Lucien[/name_m] and [name_f]Lucienne[/name_f]. But they’re in their 60s now.

I know twins named Michelle & Michael (& Michelle married a Michael!)

There’s also a web of same names between mine, my sisters’, and our mum’s first and middle names, consisting of Joanne, Anne, & Hannah; and Elizabeth & Alise

I also know a [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] with a little brother named [name_u]Michael[/name_u]! (Dad wanted a junior, had a daughter instead but still named her after himself, then later had a son and still got his junior)

Others I know:

Siblings [name_f]Gabriella[/name_f] and [name_u]Gabriel[/name_u]
Siblings [name_u]Julian[/name_u] (b), [name_u]Julie[/name_u], [name_u]Julianne[/name_u] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
Siblings Tr3va, [name_m]Trevohn[/name_m] and Tr3vae

Also, this is a pure accident but my mom and her sister (step, then adopted) pretty much have the same name. Think [name_f]Christine[/name_f] and [name_f]Christina[/name_f]. Their parents use the same nicknames for both of them and it’s super confusing.

I know a blended family with two boys named [name_u]John[/name_u], as each parent had a son named [name_u]John[/name_u] from their first marriage. I believe they were the youngest and one of the oldest in a massive 10 kid blended family.

I’ve come across a variety of sibling sets like this where the parents stuck to a really rigid theme, but these are some of the most memorable ones.

[name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] & [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] – they went by their middle names of course, but those names are still variants of each other
[name_f]Leann[/name_f], [name_f]Leah[/name_f], [name_f]Leandra[/name_f] & [name_u]Leigh[/name_u]
[name_f]Jaelah[/name_f] & [name_f]Jaleah[/name_f] – there are 4 other siblings whose names I don’t remember, as we didn’t overlap in school, but their names also began with a J, and their last name begins with a J.
[name_f]Johanna[/name_f], [name_u]John[/name_u] & [name_u]Shaun[/name_u]
