My husband and I have a toddler daughter, [name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] (who we struggled enormously to name), and a son due in [name_f]May[/name_f].
So far, the only boy name we both like is [name_u]Bryn[/name_u], possibly with the middle name [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] (which I’m not sold on - too harsh, maybe?) My main concern is that [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] and [name_u]Winter[/name_u] are too closely phonetically related to make a good sibset. What do people think? [name_u]Winter[/name_u] is only ever called by her full first name, never [name_u]Win[/name_u].
My husband has more conventional naming taste than me - I want a name that is recognisable as a name and preferably easy to spell, but definitely not in the top 200 and preferably not a name my son is likely to encounter others at his school/work as having. Our daughter’s name ticked all those boxes, from my point of view.
For reference, our surname is two names, the first a “-son” name, the second a single syllable beginning with K.
Names on my list are below and I’d love to hear any opinions/suggestions/names I haven’t thought of.
(# marks names that are in the running as a middle name, not a first name. * marks my favourites)
I would say the syllables in [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] do sound a little too much alike. [name_u]WIN[/name_u] and [name_u]BRYN[/name_u]… might not be able to escape people referring to them as that. Also, even if there’s no other male Bryns in his class, there will probably be a few female Bryns since it’s a fairly popular choice for girls these days.
My favorites on your lists are [name_m]Raphael[/name_m] and [name_m]Alby[/name_m] – simply adorable!
I love [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] for a boy, but I see what you mean with the [name_u]Bryn[/name_u]/[name_u]Win[/name_u] thing. I prefer [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_m]Raphael[/name_m] over [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. Or [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m].
I also like [name_m]Cormac[/name_m], [name_m]Judah[/name_m], [name_u]Quincy[/name_u], and [name_m]Fabian[/name_m] from your list.
If I heard of siblings named [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] I would think they were sisters. I love both [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] for girls.
From your list I like [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and -
[name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_u]Bryn[/name_u]! I don’t think the names are too close. [name_u]Winter[/name_u] & [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] make a great combo.
I like [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] & [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
Replace [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] with [name_m]Brent[/name_m], add [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], and you get [name_m]Brent[/name_m] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], which sounds nicer to my ears. But it’s your kid, so …
Ooh, I like both [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_m]Raphael[/name_m] better than [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]!
[name_u]Bryn[/name_u] sounds unisex to me and I personally prefer the sound of it for a boy. HOWEVER, I’ve met several little girls named, [name_u]Bryn[/name_u], [name_f]Brynn[/name_f], and [name_u]Brinn[/name_u] (at least two of each spelling), plus a few girls named, [name_u]Brinley[/name_u], who go by the nickname, [name_u]Brin[/name_u]. And I’ve NEVER met a boy [name_u]Bryn[/name_u].
If this doesn’t bother you, then to answer your actual question, I don’t think [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] and [name_u]Winter[/name_u] are too close.
I do agree with previous posts, that I’d assume two sisters upon hearing the names.
Though [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is a bit stuffy!
I also like from your list:
[name_m]Roland[/name_m]
[name_m]Nash[/name_m]
[name_m]Innes[/name_m]
[name_u]Kit[/name_u]
[name_u]Perry[/name_u]
[name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
It makes me so sad that so few people can see [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] on a boy! It’s one of my favorites, and I would consider it to honor my Welsh ancestry. I adore it. I’ve come across a couple of teenage/young adult Brynns through work, but the only [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] I’ve truly known was a friend of a friend–he is kind of a hunk, and a musician at that, so he’s always made [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] seem utterly cool to me! I adore [name_u]Winter[/name_u] and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] as siblings, and think they make a smashing duo. I think [name_u]Winter[/name_u] [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] and [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] are great together!
[name_m]Brent[/name_m] is quite a standard name here in Australia, though, chrisrj, and one that was often given to boys born in the 1970s and early 80s. Is it less common elsewhere?
