Sibsets- does popularity matter?

If you had a child with a name that’s not in the top 1000 would you feel that baby #2 needs a name just as distinctive? Does it matter less if they’re opposite sex children?

If you met [name]Perdita[/name] & [name]Beatrice[/name] would you be thrown off? What about [name]Perdita[/name] & [name]John[/name]? [name]Wren[/name] & [name]Colette[/name]?

Is it possible for styles to match/harmonize even if there’s a great inconsistency in the popularity of a pair of names?

And what about a possible #3

If you met [name]Perdita[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] & [name]Catalina[/name] would [name]Perdita[/name] seem glaringly different? What if you met [name]Perdita[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] & [name]Cornelia[/name]…would [name]Beatrice[/name] seem very plain & common? Or like the “normal” sister next to 2 more over-the-top choices?

What if we put a 4th child in this sibset. A boy named [name]John[/name]. Is that OK cause he is the lone boy & style consistency matters less?

As long as the names flow nicely together, it doesn’t matter to me. My name was #35 the year I was born, my older sister’s name has never entered the top 1000. But they sound really nice together, and no one has ever questioned it.

[name]Perdita[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] sound lovely together to me! All your names sound nice, I would compliment you on all of those in a sibset

Actually [name]Perdita[/name] & [name]Beatrice[/name] does seem a little mismatched to me, but [name]Perdita[/name] & [name]John[/name] doesn’t seem as bad. [name]Wren[/name] & [name]Colette[/name] aren’t too bad either.

and out of [name]Perdita[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] & [name]Catalina[/name] I actually feel that [name]Beatrice[/name] is the odd man out seeing as [name]Perdita[/name] & [name]Catalina[/name] both feel slightly exotic and romantic while [name]Beatrice[/name] doesn’t give me that feeling. And out of [name]Perdita[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] & [name]Cornelia[/name] I feel [name]Perdita[/name] is the odd man out as [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Cornelia[/name] both have the same sort of bookish type feeling that I don’t get from [name]Perdita[/name]…

So I guess to answer your question, for me it’s more important to have the same style/feel to a name, than to be closer in popularity…

If you had a child with a name that’s not in the top 1000 would you feel that baby #2 needs a name just as distinctive? Not really, but then if you had [name]John[/name], [name]Mary[/name] and [name]Cassiopeia[/name], it would look a little odd. Depends on the relative popularity of the names I think.

Does it matter less if they’re opposite sex children? No, it doesn’t matter less. Again, [name]John[/name], [name]Tom[/name], [name]Frank[/name] and [name]Dave[/name], followed by [name]Andromeda[/name], would seem a bit off.

If you met [name]Perdita[/name] & [name]Beatrice[/name] would you be thrown off? What about [name]Perdita[/name] & [name]John[/name]? [name]Wren[/name] & [name]Colette[/name]? [name]Perdita[/name] & [name]Beatrice[/name] go lovely together! [name]Perdita[/name] & [name]John[/name] is fine. [name]Wren[/name] & [name]Colette[/name] feels a little off because I feel like [name]Wren[/name] is modern, simple and free whereas [name]Colette[/name] is dated and a little stuffy- but that’s how they feel together, nothing to do with popularity.

Is it possible for styles to match/harmonize even if there’s a great inconsistency in the popularity of a pair of names? Yes! And some popular names just sit fine with anything. Take my beloved [name]William[/name], for example. He’s a fine match with [name]Sophia[/name], [name]James[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name] but I think he’d pair equally well with sub-1000 names, like [name]Rosalind[/name] and [name]Leopold[/name].

If you met [name]Perdita[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] & [name]Catalina[/name] would [name]Perdita[/name] seem glaringly different? Nope. That’s a rather fantastic trio of sisters right there.

What if you met [name]Perdita[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] & [name]Cornelia[/name]…would [name]Beatrice[/name] seem very plain & common? Or like the “normal” sister next to 2 more over-the-top choices? No. They still all fit well together in my eyes.

What if we put a 4th child in this sibset. A boy named [name]John[/name]. Is that OK cause he is the lone boy & style consistency matters less? I don’t think that the style shouldn’t matter just because he’s a boy. But I reckon [name]John[/name] fits well with everything

Honestly, I don’t think popularity really matters with siblings. As long as you’re not planning on a sibset of [name]Aphrodite[/name], Alixxxsandruhh, Amhlaoibh and [name]Zak[/name], I think you’d be fine

  1. Not at all. Unless you had a sibset of super traditional names like [name]William[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name] and then the other sibling was Nymphadora, it would be weird
  2. No way
  3. I think [name]Perdita[/name] and [name]Beatrice[/name] sound awkward together. [name]Perdita[/name] and [name]John[/name], even more awkward. [name]Wren[/name] and [name]Colette[/name] sound amazing.
  4. Absolutely! Triplets named [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Madeline[/name], and [name]Emma[/name] sound pretty good to me.
  5. No. I would just think that the mother thought out the names very well, and didn’t second guess herself and choose [name]Emily[/name], [name]Sophie[/name], and [name]Isabel[/name] instead.
  6. They fit good so no
  7. I think [name]John[/name] would seem plain next to [name]Perdita[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name], and [name]Cornelia[/name].

I actually think a lot of your names go really well together. We are naming our daughter [name]Colette[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name], both on your list! We think both names are beautiful, elegant, and sophisticated. We like that [name]Colette[/name] sounds cute while she is a little girl but is an elegant name for when she is older.

[name]Colette[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] is gorgeous! I actually think [name]Beatrice[/name] is a really beautiful & versatile middle! And [name]Colette[/name] is lovely. I have been considering [name]Claudette[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] and I love [name]Claudette[/name] & [name]Claudia[/name] because of [name]Colette[/name]'s [name]Claudine[/name] books!

I think all your names are fine. I have to admit I was thrown by [name]Perdita[/name]. It’s one I haven’t seen or thought of since… I last saw 101 Dalmatians. Oh well! [name]Perdita[/name] and [name]Catalina[/name] do rhyme so there’s that. [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Perdita[/name] sound fine (both Shakespearean and yes I would assume Mom and Dad love [name]Shakespeare[/name]). Maybe [name]Hermia[/name] for the third girl? [name]Catalina[/name] doesn’t fit as well. I think [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Catalina[/name] sound good together. Keep in mind while they will be together someday they won’t. It’s just as important for stand alone potential as sib-set. Good [name]Luck[/name]!

IMHO, popularity doesn’t matter as much as style. [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Iris[/name], for instance, are well-matched despite a rank discrepancy: both are two-syllable, four-letter vintage nature names. [name]Samson[/name] and [name]Naomi[/name] are another example. [name]Both[/name] offbeat Biblical names, they sound right together despite the fact that [name]Naomi[/name] is in the Top 100 and [name]Samson[/name] is all the way down in the 800s.

OK I did a bit of a theme with the [name]Shakespeare[/name] thing. I should’ve made sibsets with no real connection outside of maybe sound/vibe. I was trying to gauge whether people were thrown off by popularity discrepancies.
