So cool, thanks for sharing! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites:

[name_u]Walter[/name_u] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]

Fascinating! I loved seeing the spelling variations, such as [name_m]Rheuben[/name_m], [name_m]Clide[/name_m] and [name_f]Chloie[/name_f]. There were so many ‘nickname names’ - do you think they were full given names? It felt very ‘UK’ (which is where I live) reading all the ‘ie’ endings!

Favourite sibsets: [name_u]Jessie[/name_u], [name_u]Royal[/name_u], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] (g!) [name_m]Evert[/name_m], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Ione[/name_f] & [name_f]Mary[/name_f].

Favourite individual names: [name_m]Alven[/name_m], [name_f]Trena[/name_f], [name_f]Claudie[/name_f], Arby (cute!), [name_u]Elmer[/name_u].

These intrigued me: [name_u]Orie[/name_u], [name_f]Mirtha[/name_f], [name_f]Permelia[/name_f] (thanks for adding mom’s name!), [name_f]Letha[/name_f], Marildia, [name_m]Clell[/name_m], [name_m]Hiram[/name_m], [name_f]Tosha[/name_f], Elestie, [name_f]Rhoda[/name_f], Aar, Polena, Locia, Landa, Oatur.

Nickname names were pretty popular here back then so I do think they were full names.

I’ve found some more Permelias. I guess she wasn’t the only one!

I loved [name_m]Leon[/name_m] and [name_m]Forrest[/name_m] too. It’s very nameberry haha. They have matching vibes.

How fun to look at these! I’m intrigued by multiple appearances of Loral. I wonder if that’s an alternate spelling of [name_u]Laurel[/name_u] or if it’s from another source.

I have an ancestor from around this period who was [name_f]Flossie[/name_f], given name [name_u]Florence[/name_u]. (Never going to use it, but I love it!) I don’t think that census takers worried too much about nicknames vs. given, so I expect some of these are nicknames.

I also noted that larger families (5+ kids) don’t tend to have a cohesive set. Some Johns and [name_f]Marys[/name_f] mixed in with [name_u]Omer[/name_u] and [name_f]Leafy[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] interesting to notice.

Yeah I think the census takers must have been like over it at a certain point after recording it all by hand. Talk about cramps lol. And yeah once the sibsets get large enough, it’s like the parents just start winging it hahah. I guess they could have been naming some of their kids after other people, or maybe dad was finally like okay my turn you’ve named six kids, I pick [name_f]Leafy[/name_f].

Haha, totally.

I’ve looked through census records for my own ancestry research and there was definitely a different standard for accuracy. [name_f]Beautiful[/name_f] handwriting! But one of my great-something-grandmothers appears on different records as Malzuma, Malzurna, and [name_f]Missouri[/name_f]. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I have a great grandaunt called [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] who is listed multiple times as Smanatha. She always went by her middle name (Louise), but I still think that her first was at least said [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] and not Smanatha. I mean, how would her parents have possibly come up with that? haha

[name_f]Cecily[/name_f], I was wondering where you can access this census? These names are lovely!

I found them on Ancestry.com. You can do a free trial but after that you have to have a subscription. I was on there to look at geneology (which for some reason my computer says I can’t spell right now? lol) but enjoy looking at names in the process.

Depending on where you are, census data might be available online in the public domain. [name_f]My[/name_f] state doesn’t have open records though.
