A family I follow on Instagram have kids [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_u]August[/name_u]. I never noticed it before but they just said the names together and I realized I think they are way too similar for my taste.
I also know a lot of people talk about the Duggars having [name_f]Jana[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f] [name_f]Anna[/name_f], and [name_f]Johannah[/name_f].
How close is too close for sibset names? What are some sibsets you’ve heard that you thought were too similar?
but i totally understand what you mean… i met sisters annika and hanna once. those feel too close, especially because they’re variants of the same name.
i don’t mind the combo of [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_u]August[/name_u], personally — I actually quite like i! [name_f]Jana[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f] [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and Johanna’s all sound like the same name when you say it too fast…definitley too much for me. But I guess that’s what happens when you have as many kids as physically possible with only J names to choose from.
[name_f]Nia[/name_f] and [name_f]Tia[/name_f] and [name_u]Ramsey[/name_u] and Remzy are some that I’ve heard and disliked. None as bad as the Duggar combo, though…
i know a family with a [name_f]Lili[/name_f], a [name_f]Lyla[/name_f], and a [name_u]Liam[/name_u] (and their dad’s name is [name_u]Lee[/name_u] so also very similar). i think [name_u]Liam[/name_u] & [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] is ok, especially since they’re twins, but adding older sister [name_f]Lili[/name_f] and dad [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is too much.
[name_f]My[/name_f] SO and his sister’s names are incredibly similar, and it has always bothered me so much. I’d rather not share his first name, since it’s pretty distinctive…but the set is somewhere along the lines of [name_f]Millie[/name_f] and [name_u]Miller[/name_u].
I also know brothers names [name_u]Jonah[/name_u] and [name_u]Joseph[/name_u], and I imagine that gets pretty confusing.
I don’t mind shared first initials as long as the names sound otherwise distinct. I generally am not a fan of rhyming names (i.e. [name_u]Kelly[/name_u] & Shelly). I also don’t really like matching vowel sounds, like what you’re noticing with [name_f]Olive[/name_f] & [name_u]August[/name_u]. That would be too close for me.
I’m a bit torn when considering names that are essentially variations of each other, partially because I sure love variations of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] I think it can work as long as they have somewhat distinct sounds, or if one is used in the middle spot. But something like [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] & [name_f]Nicole[/name_f] is too much in my opinion (and I did know twins name [name_u]Nick[/name_u] & Nicole).
I know of a sibset that has an [name_m]Andrew[/name_m], [name_u]Andrea[/name_u], and [name_u]Anderson[/name_u].
And another that had a [name_u]Lee[/name_u] and [name_f]Leah[/name_f].
Those are all too close for me. I’m good with the same initials, but a different sound - like brothers [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_u]John[/name_u] for example. The Duggars are too much and way too close.
I know siblings
[name_m]Eric[/name_m] and [name_f]Erika[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f] and [name_m]Elton[/name_m]
[name_u]Axel[/name_u] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_u]Haven[/name_u] , [name_u]Raven[/name_u] and Greyden
I met sisters [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f]. Not twins or anything. I guess to non name enthusiasts it is a beautiful sibset but I felt nothing but panic for their mother who was expecting a possible third sister.
I know a [name_m]Manuel[/name_m] and his older sister is [name_f]Manuela[/name_f]! I also know an [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] who has a little sister called [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] I guess with [name_f]Manuela[/name_f], they didn’t think they would have a son and chose to honour dad who is [name_m]Manuel[/name_m]. Then little [name_m]Manuel[/name_m] came along and they decided to use it anyway! I have no explanation for [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] other than they must really like names that end in -bel!
I don’t think [name_f]Olive[/name_f] and [name_u]August[/name_u] are too close at all . Maybe I pronounce them a bit differently. I do think that [name_f]Jana[/name_f], [name_f]Joy[/name_f] [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Johannah[/name_f] are too close.
To me, names are too close if they sound too similar, which could be confusing or if they are variations of the same name, even if they sound different enough.
I can’t think of any too close sibsets I know personally but I have seen some rhyming twin names online. I’ve also come across sisters named [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] and [name_u]Andrea[/name_u].
The only siblings I can think of are twins William & Lillian nn Billie & Lillie. Which I actually love! I do know loads of sibsets where they all end in ie/y and I definitely trip over their names when said quickly. Generally though I say each to their own. If people are happy with their name choices it doesn’t tend to bother me. Elizabeth & Isabella to me is fine but I definitely understand what people mean. I personally wouldn’t go with Joy Anna & Johannah or Miles & Milo etc or rhyming names. Although I don’t mind repeating vowels and sounds e.g. long i in Eliza & Violet, in fact I really like that.
