Sibyl or Sybil Poll

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!

I love this name so much, but which spelling do you think is the best? I used to prefer [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] because it’s the original spelling, but [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] has been growing on me due to the fact that it’s commonly spelled that way these days. Please vote to help me decide!

Which is the best?
  • [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]

Sybill is how I automatically want to spell it, so I voted for [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]. Honestly, though, I almost have a hard time distinguishing the spellings on “paper.” [name_f]My[/name_f] eyes want to flip flop the “i” and “y,” so both spellings look fine to me. lol

Oh, okay! @ChelsAnne22

Sybil is what I’d automatically go with

I like [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] best because I think Sybbie is just the cutest! It sounds exactly the same, but [name_f]Sibbie[/name_f] doesn’t hold anywhere near the same charm for me. And [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] could also give you [name_u]Billie[/name_u]

Those are such cute nicknames! @katinka

Sybil is more intuitive to me, but I personally prefer [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] aesthetically. Probably because I love the name [name_f]Sibella[/name_f].

@itsjustjack I prefer [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] as of now :slightly_smiling_face:

I love [name_f]Sibylla[/name_f] original form, so my vote goes to [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]. I think both are intuitive to me, but prefer [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] look.

Sybil is how I automatically want to spell it, and I also find it more aesthetically pleasing. I know a [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], and she spells it this way.

My brain can’t decide which ones it likes. I looked at it long enough they started to become the same and I forgot how I spell [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]. (I think I spell it [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]) but then I like the nickname [name_f]Sibbie[/name_f] so then do I spell it [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]. honestly I don’t know anymore. Lol.

I have a daughter called [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] (that spelling). It was my preferred spelling all through the pregnancy, although I liked them both. I don’t regret using it BUT people spell it [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] all. the. time. [name_m]Even[/name_m] when I have just spelled it [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] my mom occasionally spells it [name_f]Sybil[/name_f].

If this is for a real baby I would probably recommend [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]. I thought since it was so little-used that my spelling would become people’s default but this has not been the case. I’m pretty confident in my naming choices and am not much bothered by the errors … but it’s possibly not worth the hassle.

@Emmeliney Wow, a real life [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]! Great choice! That’s what I thought would happen. This is hypothetical since I’m a teen, but I prefer [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]. I think people automatically want to spell it [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] because of [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] and [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].

I think it’s definitely the default! I’m at the point now where anything other than [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] looks wrong, but I remember when it was the other way around.

Wow, thank you to everyone who voted! I’m pretty set on [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]

Sybil/Sibyl is one of our top choices for our second daughter. I think I prefer the [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] version however I would hate for her to deal with spelling issues her whole life because its just annoying. if you could do it over again would you give her the more common spelling?

I prefer [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] bc it makes the nn [name_u]Billie[/name_u] more intuitive. But I didn’t know [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] was the original spelling and I can see the urge to go with the older spelling.
