Sibyl

Hello berries,
So I am working on my list with [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] being the favorite right now. I found out that she is the only one that doesn’t have a nickname idea(like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] - [name_m]Oz[/name_m], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] - [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] and [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] - [name_u]Danny[/name_u]). The problem is that I don’t really like any of the options. To say honest, I literally shudder every time I think my daughter [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] would be called [name_u]Billy[/name_u]. I also can think of Sybbie/[name_f]Sibbie[/name_f] but it’s just too childish in my eyes to suit anyone older that 5.
And I still can’t decide on spelling. I initially wanted to use [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] after [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde’s [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_m]Vane[/name_m] but then, I suppose it’s spelled [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] on The Downtown [name_u]Abbey[/name_u] so do you think everyone will misspell [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] because of the series?
To, conclude, my three questions for now are:

  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] can go without a nickname even if her siblings would have them?
  2. Which spelling, [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] or [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], looks prettier?
  3. Which middle name flows better: [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] or [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]? Have you got any other middle name ideas?
Thank you for your time and thoughts!

First of all, I’d just like to offer my opinion about [name_f]Sibylla[/name_f]. I think that is such a beautiful name, and [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] could perhaps be a nickname?

  1. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you go with just [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f], I’d say ofc it could go without nickname, though I like Sybbie/[name_f]Sibbie[/name_f], but you’re right about it perhaps not working when she’s 16

  2. I like the y in it, so I’d say [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f].

  3. I have a hard time with middle names myself, but love the 2 names idea. To me [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], but that is just because I like it better. I have a hard time thinking of a middle name for [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]. I hope you figure something out  I good flow is important.

Yes, I think [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]/[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] can go without a nickname. It’s not long and I don’t think people are naturally inclined to shorten it.

I prefer the spelling [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], although I love the connection of [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde’s [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_m]Vane[/name_m].

[name_m]Both[/name_m] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] and [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] are perfect with [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]/[name_f]Sybil[/name_f]. I think I slightly prefer [name_f]Victoria[/name_f].

  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] can go without a nickname even if her siblings would have them? Absoulutely. [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Constance[/name_f], and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] sound fabulous together. Not every name needs a nickname. If you are looking for something longer, you could try [name_f]Sibylla[/name_f], and call her [name_f]Billa[/name_f] if want.
  2. Which spelling, [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] or [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], looks prettier? I prefer the [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] spelling. [name_m]Sy[/name_m] looks weird to me, and [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] is the original spelling, which I like.
  3. Which middle name flows better: [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] or [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]? Have you got any other middle name ideas? [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] has better flow
    I have on my list:
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_u]Clare[/name_u]- this is my favorite
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] Esmé
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Helena[/name_f]
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
    [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]

I hope that helped!

[name_f]Sibyll[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] looks beautiful

  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] can go without a nickname even if her siblings would have them?

Definitely, my sister has a nickname, because her name is longer, but I don’t have one at all. [name_u]Haley[/name_u]'s quite short, so no nickname is needed, and the same goes for [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f].

  1. Which spelling, [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] or [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], looks prettier?

[name_f]Sybil/name_f is on instinct, how I would spell it. I love the literary connection, BUT, [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] is most likely how it’ll be spelled - and believe me, respelling your name 800000 times, isn’t fun (18 years and my relatives STILL don’t remember that there’s no ‘i’ in my name…).

  1. Which middle name flows better: [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] or [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]? Have you got any other middle name ideas?

[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] is beautiful! I like [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] as well, but I don’t have the best connections to the name, so it clouds my view of it a bit. For other ideas:

[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]

For middle name ideas, I love what [name_f]Elea[/name_f] on British [name_u]Baby[/name_u] Names lists as ‘Upright Elegance’ with [name_f]Sybil[/name_f]! [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Constance[/name_f], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f], and [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] all appear on the list, so I’m going to hazard a guess and say that the list falls right into your style!

Here’s a copy of her list in case I’ve missed out any options that you like. Upright Elegance - British Baby Names

I disagree with @lawsonhaley. I think people aren’t going to know how to spell [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]/[name_f]Sybill[/name_f], no matter how it is spelled. Some people might get the TV reference or literary reference, but I still think most people will have never seen/heard it before. I agree that it is annoying to have to spell your name a hundred thousand times (I’ve been there, my name is [name_f]Eleni[/name_f] and it is impossible for most people), but some names you can’t get around it, and I think [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]/[name_f]Sybill[/name_f] is one of them.

It all depends on where you live and what you’re exposed to, to be honest, I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and I’ve run into the name a few times, my grandmother has a friend named [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], so I’ve become more familiar with it. In [name_f]England[/name_f], I know it has more usage, so if OP lives in the UK, there’s less chance of a problem.

Thank you all so much berries!
@hardertobreathe: That’s funny you suggested [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f] because I first read The Picture of [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u] in translation where [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] was translated as [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]. But then I found out that she was a [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] in the original and thought it was such a fantastic, beautiful name. I don’t know why but [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f] just seems more tender and feminine thank [name_f]Sybilla[/name_f]. Thank you for suggestion though.
@[name_u]Haley[/name_u]: Oh, such a bunch of suggestions, thank you! [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] are just stunning.

Also, do you think that having a [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] and a [name_u]James[/name_u] would be strange? I didn’t intentionally put them on the list together, just noticed it recently.

I think those are my favourites too! [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] and [name_u]James[/name_u] fit perfectly together, so not at all! I actually love the idea of [name_f]Sybil[/name_f], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] as siblings - the sibling set feels really regal and sophisticated. [name_u]James[/name_u] is a more versatile name, so it goes with anything really (Unless there’s a connection here I’ve missed, haha).

By the way, [name_u]Haley[/name_u] the list you linked is just divine! I like every single name on it, it falls right in my style indeed.

I mean the connection with The Picture of [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u], where [name_f]Sibyl[/name_f]'s brother is named [name_u]James[/name_u]. Maybe I would come out as a crazy [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde fan if I use them together.

I love [name_f]Elea[/name_f]'s lists myself - Upright Elegance falls right into my style with some names ([name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], etc) and I love a lot of the names off of it in the middle spot too! ([name_f]Nancy[/name_f] [name_f]Georgina[/name_f], for example).

Haha, I haven’t read too much by [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] Wilde (I’m more [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u], [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] sisters, [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] :P), but I don’t think too many people would catch on to that. Not as much as they would if you had twins named [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] and [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] (or, even better, [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]? ).

Right, thanks [name_u]Haley[/name_u].
Any other thoughts?
