Sickness Worse With Twins?

I’m happily almost 6 weeks along with my first pregnancy, and feeling good. Earlier this week we confirmed that there are two little yolk sacs happily side by side in there, so we’re trying to wrap our minds around the notion of twins! I’m quickly discovering that the books I’ve gotten from a friend are very much centered on single-child pregnancies, and I’m wondering if some of the experienced momberries out there could give me some guidance.

Something I read alluded to the idea that I’ll be even sicker with twins that I would be with one. So far, my appetite is normal and I’m feeling great, but I’m getting paranoid that that could change at any moment. I know that some people never feel sick, or it’s very mild – this is true for two friends I’ve spoken to – and there’s really no way to predict how one person’s experience will relate to another’s. That’s not stopping me from thinking about it, though. This morning, even, some stuff hasn’t seemed as appetizing as it usually does…and I can’t tell if that’s really how I’m feeling, or if I’m psyching myself out and making my tummy turn by worrying about when I’m going to start feeling sick.

So, has this been your experience? Is “morning” (we all know it can hit at any time, let’s be real) sickness worse with two? Or am I getting worried about something that really might not happen?

Thanks in advance, ladies! I appreciate your support and information!

Congratulations! Twins are such a blessing. I think you are worrying your self sick. I have been more sick with this one then all of my other pregnancies combined(Including twins). [name_m]Just[/name_m] take a deep breath and try to stop worrying about things that are out of your hands.

There are books about multiples(I can’t think of their names right now) but they mostly just terrified me into thinking something bad would happen to my boys.

I’ve never had twins but I had horrible morning sickness with both my singletons and it had already started by six weeks. And by start I mean already throwing up several times a day. So you might be lucky and not have any or yours could be taking awhile to present. If you do start having trouble keeping food down I highly recommend getting an anti-nausea drug such as Zofran it was a major help for both of my pregnancies. Congratulations!

Some people sail through pregnancies without any nausea and vomiting, others are not so lucky. I was pretty sick with my first pregnancy. It was a slow progression, but things were in full swing by week six. Heavy on the nausea, light on the vomiting the first go round. I feel like my nausea and vomiting was more severe with my second pregnancy for a variety of reasons. To be fair I was working 12 hour night shift three times a week- that certainly exacerbated the problem. I was throwing two days after my pregnancy test was positive…and I threw up A LOT. I found out at 13 weeks I was having twins. I will say that although I was more acutely sick the second time but it went away faster than during my first pregnancy.

Thank you so much for your replies, ladies! I’m trying not to drive myself crazy, worrying about something that may not happen, but I can’t help but fret that I may be feeling yucky for [name_u]Christmas[/name_u]. So far, so good, though! I’m six weeks today, and though I have had some changes in appetite (as I’ve read could happen, my affinity for salad and vegetables has waned tremendously and I’m all about the carbs right now), I’ve been nausea-free. Here’s hoping it continues! Any other stories/advice you have to offer are appreciated.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] to chime in with some anecdotal ‘evidence’: when my mum was pregnant with twins (me and my sister - we were also her first-borns) she first wondered if it could possibly be twins because of her awful morning sickness. However, morning sickness apparently runs in the family, so please don’t be too alarmed!
[name_f]Merry[/name_f] [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] and congratulations!

During my first twin pregnancy, I didn’t even know I was pregnant until 8 weeks along! I had a light “period” at 4 weeks and didn’t test until I was 8 weeks because started feeling soooo tired and was nauseous. The nausea only lasted for a week or so-- it was kinda intense, but I think I only actually threw up once.

During the 2nd twin pregnancy – I was really tired and a little queasy, but nothing really serious until around 7 or 8 weeks. It lasted pretty bad for about a month on and off. It wasn’t worse than my singleton pregnancies though honestly.

I did have worse morning sickness with my twins than with my other pregnancies. It lasted until well into the second trimester but it wasn’t constant, it was more like if I tried to drink a lot of fluid on an empty stomach or hadn’t eaten for quite awhile then I would start to get nauseous that would usually result in me throwing up. There is a good book by Dr. [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] [name_m]Luke[/name_m] called When You Are Expecting Twins, Triplets and Quads that gives a lot of good advice to keep you healthy during the pregnancy. Best wishes!

I was never once morning sick with my twins. Perhaps a tad queasy if I didn’t eat enough but it was no big deal. I hope you have the same experience.

I am currently 17w with twins and I haven’t felt sick once. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t psych yourself out, every pregnancy is different!

Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone! I am, at this point, pretty much hungry all of the time. I’m hoping that staying on top of that is going to help me stay ahead of the nausea. ajh, thank you so much for the book recommendation! I will definitely check it out.
