*sigh* starting over

Hubs and I had an enjoyable evening discussing our girl’s list. It seemed like such a productive conversation, but we realized when we got to the end of it that we had eliminated all of our names, and only added back one name that I don’t think I even like.

[name_f]Elise[/name_f] was our top pick but he pointed out that it was sort of hard to say with our last name, which starts with Sh. I hadn’t said it outloud until then and realized, yep, it had very bad flow :-/

[name_f]Audrey[/name_f] was our other top pick but I sort of admitted to him that I didn’t like it very much. I feel like I should love it, but I just don’t.

We decided some other names we had been kicking around - [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Brynn[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], just weren’t making the cut.
He suggested [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], and while I really like the nn [name_f]Talie[/name_f], it’s awfully popular and I just don’t think I like the [name_u]Nat[/name_u] sound.

We want feminine without being frilly - though apparently we don’t agree on what frilly means. I suggested [name_f]Pheobe[/name_f], which I previously hadn’t considered bc of the Friends character but it was growing on me, husband said “that breaks ALL our rules, way too frilly” - seriously?

I really don’t know where to go from here. I feel like we need to find out the sex of the baby so that we can name it easier, but I REALLLLLY wanted to be surprised this time:(

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]? Frilly? That shocks me! It’s so interesting how different people’s perspectives on names can be.

If your last name is the only problem with [name_f]Elise[/name_f], is there a longer form that might sound better with your surname? Something like [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Elspet[/name_f] / [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], or [name_f]Elisa[/name_f]?

If you like [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] but not the [name_u]Nat[/name_u] sound, what about [name_f]Athalie[/name_f]? It’s the [name_m]French[/name_m] form of the Biblical name Athaliah, and it’s pronounced like [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] without the N. Or maybe [name_f]Adelie[/name_f]?

Some more suggestions:

[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]
Merit
[name_f]Zelie[/name_f]
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f]

[name_f]Berit[/name_f]
[name_f]Fia[/name_f]
[name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Tova[/name_f]
[name_f]Asta[/name_f] / [name_f]Aster[/name_f]
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]

Here are my suggestion:
[name_f]Talia[/name_f] - since you like [name_u]Tali[/name_u]
[name_f]Natalia[/name_f] - nice alt. to [name_f]Natalie[/name_f]
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u] - not frilly, but still nice with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] - nice alt. to [name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Elysia[/name_f] - maybe a little frilly, but would solve the issue with [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Marnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Nova[/name_f]
[name_u]Ember[/name_u]
[name_u]Skye[/name_u]
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] - oh, I really like this with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m]! * this one
[name_f]Willow[/name_f] - see [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]

Best of luck!

[name_f]Vita[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassia[/name_f]
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f]

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Alyson[/name_f]?

Or
[name_f]Arielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Amara[/name_f]
[name_f]Aida[/name_f]
[name_u]Lyric[/name_u]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_f]Lana[/name_f]
[name_f]Marin[/name_f]
[name_f]Marisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Meadow[/name_f]
[name_f]Nia[/name_f]
[name_f]Naomi[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_u]Wynter[/name_u]

Tell me about it. [name_m]Humph[/name_m].

DH really loves [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and it was my sister’s mn who passed this summer. It just seems to formal compared to [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m] though, don’t you think? We both like the nn [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] though…

the rest of these I’ll look over with dh. I like [name_f]Silvie[/name_f], but with the SH-- middle name we have ruled out all S names.
DYT [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is too close to [name_f]Isla[/name_f]?

I have a hard time separating [name_f]Isla[/name_f] from any other name ending in A. Like, I feel like [name_f]Talia[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f] are too similar.
[name_u]Hadley[/name_u] is my friend’s baby’s name (she actually says I named her baby, lol, but I don’t even actually like that name!)
No big on the others, except [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - which I love but it was a dog’s name. [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] was a top contender for our last child, we haven’t really come back to it this time, but maybe we should. It is cute and spunky…I used to like [name_f]Willow[/name_f] a lot but have fallen out of favor.

thanks for the suggestions!

I like [name_u]June[/name_u] and [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] - dh already vetoed [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] and since baby is due in [name_f]July[/name_f], we have nixed [name_u]June[/name_u]. I was feeling [name_f]Violet[/name_f] for a while, I forget why I stopped…maybe dh vetoed it too? [name_m]Will[/name_m] have to mention it again.

Tessa is my neice’s name - very sweet!

I suggested [name_f]Liesl[/name_f] yesterday, was kind of excited about it. DH said no. [name_u]BOO[/name_u] hiss.
[name_u]Sasha[/name_u] is sweet, but, again, no S names. Which is too bad because we both like [name_u]Sage[/name_u] too. [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_f]Aria[/name_f] - it’s my nieces name though. [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] too close to [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. [name_f]Cassia[/name_f] is cute, will suggest that to dh.

Thanks!

Not a fan of many of these. [name_f]Marin[/name_f] used to be one of my favorites, loved the connection to the sea. Then my daughter had a [name_f]Marin[/name_f] in her class and it totally turned me off the name. The child wasn’t even that horrid, just hearing people say it out loud really turned me off. I like [name_f]Naomi[/name_f] a bit.
Thanks!

ok…I’m starting to get a little bit of butterflies about [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]…baby is due in [name_f]July[/name_f] - [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is [name_f]July[/name_f]'s birthstone. Also, I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the nn Ru/Roo/[name_u]Rue[/name_u]. I was lobbying for [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] or [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] for a boy because I love the idea of calling him Roo, so this could be the answer to that.

I’m nervous to go suggest to my husband though…it seems any time I get really excited about a name he shoots it town right away. :-/

[name_f]Talia[/name_f]
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] ([name_f]Emilia[/name_f] would make a pretty MN for this one)
[name_f]Diane[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_u]Eden[/name_u]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lena[/name_f]
[name_f]Rina[/name_f]

Good luck! [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] sounds perfect with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m]; feminine but not frilly, with a lovely connection to her birth month. Plus the jewellers on Antiques Roadshow are always talking about rubies being a symbol of love. (I love [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] too, by the way. And [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], come to think of it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t love the [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] Murdoch association.)

The only other name I was thinking while reading through is perhaps you might like [name_f]Fay[/name_f] / [name_f]Faye[/name_f]; I think it would match beautifully with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_m]Grant[/name_m], is feminine but not frilly, and shares some of the sound of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. Or perhaps [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Faye[/name_f] might work?

p.s. I know that nervous feeling SO WELL! I usually wait til we’re out at dinner and have had some wine, then try to casually slip the name into the conversation, act like it’s no big deal… and hope he has an epiphany that THIS IS THE NAME!

…and he laughed [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] out of the room. Grrrrrrrr…

sometimes I feel like he’s not taking this as seriously as I am. Like, not really paying attention to what we are looking for. When I said [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] tonight he was like, “but it ends with a Y sound!!” and I say, “Yes, exactly! That’s what we want - we are staying away from ends in A sounds because they sound like [name_f]Isla[/name_f].” It’s like him calling [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] frilly last night - seriously, not a frilly name. And I liked [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] a lot but he thinks it’s not close enough to my sister’s actual name to use as an honor name, that the only way to honor her is to use her actual name, which I’m not comfortable doing. Since it’s MY sister, you’d think I could be the judge of what honors her, but I guess not.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is beautiful.
I love this name, but it’s getting a little popular.
I was going to suggest
[name_f]Elle[/name_f]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_f]Topaz[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Lark[/name_f]
[name_u]Wren[/name_u]
and
[name_f]Maude[/name_f]
I second [name_f]Fay[/name_f]
Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!

dh says he LOVES [name_m]Reuben[/name_m]. They are wonderful sandwiches. face palm

lol I might need a new approach. This is how it went:
me: I have a really good new idea for a name. I’m trying to figure out how to tell it to you without you saying no.
him: laughs
me: no, seriously…I want you to think about it.
him: ok, I wont say no right away.
me: [name_u]Ruby[/name_u].
him: laughs
me: no, come on, it’s the july birthstone, it’s cute and spunky…etc
him: laughing, excuses about how it ends in Y and doesn’t sound like a supreme court name, promises he wont actually say no today, since it’s my birthday.

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is actually slightly less popular in VT than [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is, so I’m ok with that part.
I like [name_f]Elle[/name_f], might think about that one.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] I love for a boy, dh has said no several times. Also [name_f]Lark[/name_f] he has rejected.
Not feeling the others, or [name_f]Fay[/name_f]. Sorry:(

People earlier kept suggesting [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and I was really not interested, but I’ve been thinking about it a bit more. WDYT of the spelling? Is it confusing? My cousin is planning to name her baby [name_m]Iain[/name_m] or some other very irish name that’s spelled the irish way and the whole family is rolling her eyes at her. We spelled [name_f]Isla[/name_f] the Scottish way but I wonder if [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] would make people sigh at me too.

[name_f]Happy[/name_f] birthday!

[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] is lovely. I love the birth month idea.
