Signature Snap?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]

I am just looking for some perspective from seasoned berries out there! I am wondering if you would be upset by someone taking names from your signature? I obviously don’t mean if you had [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] in your signature then you saw it on someone else’s, as [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is a common name which is loved by many (including me!) I don’t even mean an unusual name, because nameberry is all about sharing those uncommon beauties.

I’m more referring to, if you had a conversation with someone where they specifically mentioned some combinations from your signature, and then three or four of your combinations (in the same order) appear in their signature. For example, if you had [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] [name_f]Raine[/name_f], [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] & [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] [name_f]Azure[/name_f] in your signature, someone complimented them and then put all these combinations in their signature.

Of course I understand the point of nameberry is sharing ideas, but surely it’s more meaningful for everyone to have their own ideas? If I am being totally unreasonable, I’m happy to hear that, it just made me feel a little bit uncomfortable.

Personally, I wouldn’t care. I don’t own any names, so if someone wants to use [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] [name_f]Ava[/name_f], go for it.

If anything I’d be flattered they liked it so much? But honestly, if I’m friends with them, I’ll comment with “hey, I like your taste!” but if I dont know them, I just let it slide.

I mean, for all I know, [name_f]Britney[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] could be just as meaningful to one person as it is to me. To get upset that someone “stole” it is quite immature imo, because essentially, it’s as though you (i mean this in general) believe that you are the only person creative enough to come up with that, and it can only possibly have meaning to you, and you alone, and because of that you “own” it.

But names are not property.

I totally understand what you’re saying - that’s why I just kept it to myself initially. And I don’t think I made up any names of course, my favourites were popular long before I was born!
I also have had inspiration from berries, I love Bluejay after seeing it in someone’s sig and have tried to fit it on my own list. My issue is not with one name or combination, but I mean three or four combinations, eg if I put [name_f]Britney[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_u]Brooke[/name_u] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] & [name_m]Aaron[/name_m] [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] all in my signature at the same time. It seems a little awkward and strange to me? Maybe I’m just being odd about it!
Thank you for your reply in any case, it has definitely helped put things into perspective. And I love your new signature btw! Although it’s a shock not seeing [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] on there ”

Well, most of my combos dont consist of common names, so I would be kinda weirded out if I saw like 3-4 of them on someone else’s signature
On the other hand, if they just had a lot of the same names but not combos I wouldnt really care at all

Honestly it’s happened before to me where someone has had multiple combinations that I had i. my signature and I still have never been bothered by it.

Imitation is the best form of flattery, as they say.

Also, [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]'s still on the list, there’s just so many other names I’m testing out, but thanks!

I am not a seasoned [name_u]Berry[/name_u], but I agree with this 100%.

I think it would be a little strange, however, usually signatures change so often that I wouldn’t be bothered too much by it.
What I do when I put somebody’s combo on my list (of course it doesn’t belong to them but they were the inspiration) and somebody compliments me on it, is that I tell them the user I copied it from, simply because I’d feel weird about praise for somebody else’s idea.

Scenarios like those always teach my something, though: to not love names because they’re unusual but because I love them. If I’m bothered by a somebody potentially using the name, often hundreds of miles away, because it’s not special enough anymore, it’s probably not the right name as how would I feel actually meeting another kid with the name?!

This was really well put!

To the OP, I can definitely see what you are saying and I do think that it would be a little odd (especially if we are talking about really out there names, like [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] or [name_m]Hezekiah[/name_m] [name_m]Sirius[/name_m], for example). It actually has happened before where I made a post asking for opinions on one of my combos, which had long been in my signature, and I happened to notice that the exact combo appeared in another [name_u]Berry[/name_u]'s signature within hours. I was a bit irritated, and still find it weird, but I guess maybe they saw the name and something clicked for them…like maybe they liked a certain name but couldn’t think of a middle/first to go with it. I don’t know, really. It doesn’t bother me too much anymore. If this [name_u]Berry[/name_u]'s tastes don’t change, she becomes pregnant, she has a child the right sex for the name, and her partner agrees to the name (so…a perfect storm, essentially), then I think I can survive knowing that someone used the same name as I plan to use.

Someone once told me they loved one of my combinations, [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] (or [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]) and would I mind if they added it to their signature. It was probably the most meaningful combination I had ([name_u]Fran[/name_u]- diminutives have been passed down the family, including me for my middle name, it’s Italian so it honours my heritage, and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] subtly honours my mum’s name by having the same meaning) but honestly, I’m so far off having kids that I didn’t mind it.

I’d probably have been angry if they’d just taken it without asking though and we’d been in the same thread or something, just because it is so personal. It’s not like it’s [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is very common combination or anything.

I wouldn’t really care at all. I wouldn’t even think they stole it. I have [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] on my list and so do (according to my count) eight other people…some names really are just made for each other. If they asked, especially, I’d let them. For double middles I’m a little more reserved, especially if they take credit for it. For example, if I see someone else with a combo like Nefertari [name_f]Elisabetta[/name_f] [name_f]Dulce[/name_f] (my top girl a few months ago), I would take a double take but ultimately, I’d let it slide. Some names are just made for each other and none of us actually owns the name.

I don’t really care or mind. I’d probably find it a bit odd if a whole two middle combo appeared or most of my favourites suddenly showed up in someone’s sig, but that’s never happened and I doubt it ever would. Plus if it’s not for an actual child, it doesn’t bother me at all, even if it was I’d feel a little smug that I helped name someone lol. It can depend on the combo as well. Sometimes I find myself brainstorming combos, and I probably subconsciously note down a combo I might have seen in a signature without realising it, so I most likely do it myself. I have a bit of an originality complex with firsts, but that’s my own issue.

Thank you for everyone’s thoughts! I won’t reply to everyone one by one but just a quick reply.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] to clarify, I don’t tend to love names based on originality - my top names are the very common [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]. And I would have no problem seeing one of my names in someone else’s signature by coincidence - or not, especially if the person asked beforehand, I would be so flattered! I was referring to a different type of situation, where four/five of my name combinations had appeared in someone else’s signature shortly after having talked to this user. To be honest, I was more perplexed than upset/angry. It wasn’t that I felt I “owned” the names or anything, but that this person had commented on these names and then put several of the combos in their signature, which seemed strange.
Anyway, just dropping a reply and a thanks to everyone who answered. I won’t close the thread, but won’t be replying to it anymore either.

If you’re advertising your favourite names or combinations in your signature then yeah someone else might “steal” your names. As previous posters have said, nobody owns a name. However, if another [name_u]Berry[/name_u] suddenly included several of another person’s unusual combinations in their signature it’d be a bit rude/weird.

It would be odd for a string of names to be used, but I don’t usually list names I’d actually use in my signature so it isn’t really a worry for me. Unless it’s a change right after being on the same thread, many people end up using the same combos at one point or another. There are certain trends on here, which I am also guilty of, that make it more likely for there to have the same names used. The signature defensiveness, not talking specifically about you OP, is why many times I google to see if anyone else has used the combo. Sometimes names just feel familiar for some reason and you realize it’s because you’ve seen the combo before.

[name_u]True[/name_u]. But I would be slightly upset, too.

It also possible to google out someones signature, which is why I dont keep names in my sig. anymore.
