[name]Hi[/name] all! I am writing from [name]Canada[/name], reaching out to you berries for some sage advice. We are due to have our second boy in [name]May[/name], so there is time. [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Felix[/name] are at the top of our list, [name]Otis[/name] comes in third. My partner is [name]German[/name] and oddly that means he dislikes most [name]German[/name] sounding names (otherwise Ansel would be in top three). My concern is that [name]Felix[/name] and Silas are both becoming very “popular” in that uncommon way. Felix is my grandfather’s name. [name]Silas[/name] is meaningful as it means woods, and that is indeed where we live. Our 5 yr old is [name]Emery[/name] [name]Louis[/name] [name]Walter[/name].
Suggestions anyone??? Any additions? Thanks in advance
[name]Felix[/name] is one of my favorite names right now! [name]Silas[/name] is also handsome. I don’t think either will be top 20 names anytime soon, but [name]Silas[/name] is definitely on the upswing, and [name]Felix[/name] seems to be getting more buzz. My hubby is also [name]German[/name] but he loves [name]German[/name] names (my son’s name is [name]Luther[/name]!). [name]Felix[/name] has a great meaning, and it goes great with [name]Emery[/name]!
[name]Felix[/name] is one of my all time favorites. So he gets my vote but I also really like [name]Silas[/name].
I think that they have a similar feel that is masculine, strong and gentle all at once.
LOL, I know what you mean by “popular in that uncommon way”, as in, all those names the people who don’t like popular names gravitate toward, so much so that you start to hear them all the time in certain pockets, or at least all the time online. My instinct is that, yes, [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Silas[/name] both fit into those categories, though they’re wonderful names. It’s a shame about [name]Ansel[/name]! What a cool name! [name]Anselm[/name] is on our list. Does your husband like that version? If you like the meaning “woods”, how about [name]Forest[/name]/[name]Forrest[/name]? I haven’t heard much of that. I think it could go well with [name]Emery[/name].
[name]How[/name] about [name]Bruno[/name]? Too [name]German[/name]?
[name]Both[/name] of these names are moving up the popularity charts, but [name]Silas[/name] seems to be less so than [name]Felix[/name]. I love both of them so much it’s hard to say which I like more!
I love all of your names. [name]Emery[/name] has a “happy” sound so I’m going to vote for spunky [name]Felix[/name]. [name]Silas[/name] and [name]Otis[/name] just give off a more serious vibe than [name]Felix[/name] does.
I love [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Silas[/name] is nice. I don’t think either of them have gotten to a stage where you need to worry about popularity just yet. I think [name]Felix[/name] would be lovely as an honouring name.
ooh yes, I have considered [name]Forest[/name], and it is hilarious to see [name]Bruno[/name] be suggested as we originally decided on [name]Bruno[/name] and that was that for a good month, until I started telling ppl and I tell ya, responses (family in Germany included) were far from positive. It is also more associated with Italian communities than [name]German[/name], despite its origins, and I began only hearing the name like “Brrrrruno!” with a rolling r. At least here it is. [name]Forest[/name] is a good, solid option to consider.
I’m obviously biased since my DS is named [name]Silas[/name], but I really do prefer [name]Silas[/name] over [name]Felix[/name]. Especially with [name]Emery[/name]! I don’t see [name]Silas[/name] as a serious name at all. To me it seems playful and edgy at the same time. When I hear [name]Felix[/name], I still think of the cat no matter what.
Two great names but I think you should go with [name]Felix[/name] as you have a great reason behind using that name and a family story to share with your son. We can watch trends but can’t ever know for sure if there’s going to be rush of [name]Silas[/name]’ making it a top 10 name or a terrible reality show star called [name]Felix[/name]. At least if he were to end up with a relatively popular name it wouldn’t be with the ‘my parents just liked it’ reasoning behind yet another little [name]Jack[/name] or [name]Aiden[/name].
Thanks so much for the great suggestions. It is true that when the names are boiled down, [name]Felix[/name] has more personal meaning and history. BUT I made a neat discovery today! [name]George[/name] [name]Eliot[/name] has two novels that include these names, published in the 1860s. [name]Silas[/name] Marner: The [name]Weaver[/name] of Raveloe, and [name]Felix[/name] [name]Holt[/name], the [name]Radical[/name]. Hmmm. The weaver versus the radical!
I love, love all three of your top choices. I think [name]Silas[/name] has the slight advantage because it has a natural nickname and I think it sounds the best with [name]Emery[/name].
