Silly thing about first name (AKA identity awareness is odd)

Does anybody else primarily go by a nickname and then have a moment when they fill out paperwork or something with their full first name and go, “Oh yeah! That is my name, isn’t it? Huh. That’s me.”

No? [name_m]Just[/name_m] me, with my silly little neurodivergent brain?

Like, I use my full name all the time, too, and I love it and still connect with it, but apparently, my brain forgot that for a day?

Yes.

I’m called my nickname 100% of the time and home and 100% of the time my my best friends. When classmates, newer friends, the kids I babysit call me my full name, it’s sometimes a total “oh, right” feeling for a second!

All the time. No one calls me by my full name unless I am at the doctor’s office or at a government agency. It is probably what motivates me to give my kids names that they actually go by lol

Yup.

I go exclusively by a nickname, and I sometimes have to remind myself when filling out documents that it is not, in fact, my legal name! [name_u]Or[/name_u] when someone at a doctor’s office calls out my full name, it always takes me a second to respond. I also always have a “Oh yeah, that’s me!” moment.

People I have known for years are often shocked to find out that my nickname isn’t my legal name, too. So much so that I had a friend see my full name on something belonging to me and ask “why does that have [full name] on it? It’s yours.” Haha!

That reminds me of working at my old retail job. When we printed off sales stickers, the top of the sheet would have our full name. One day, my coworker grabbed hers and mine at the same time and said, “Who the :duck: is this?” And I was standing right behind her like, “Hi, that’s me.”

I don’t go by a nickname, but every so often I also have an experience of seeing or hearing my name and thinking “Wow! This combo of letters and sounds actually means me!

That’s exactly what happens to me from time to time. I just stop and stare at my name and I’m like “wow that’s my name, that’s me!” even though I only use my full name :joy:

i don’t go by a nickname, but that happens to me too! whenever i have to write out my name, fill out a form, when i’m paged at work, i always have that weird moment of ‘this is really my name!’ in a good way though! :joy:

All the time. I never use my full name except on paperwork which makes it worse. I also feel like having to write it out makes it worse. It’s one thing when I just type it out but writing it down makes it weirder.

Totally, although I don’t usually go by a nickname!

I guess for me I’ve just never really connected to my given name. I always knew other people with my name and when I hear my name I tend to assume they mean someone else

There are a lot of the kids at work who go exclusively by nicknames and get a shock when they have to write their fullnames on exam papers  some cannot get their heads round it and you end up having to correct it before sending the papers off - during mocks I only usually know their nicknames (if that’s what’s on the register) and then suddenly they’ve got a different full name on the exam registers and that’s jarring for me and I can’t imagine the weird feel of actually having to use the different name

I can relate! [name_f]My[/name_f] real name is [name_f]Layla[/name_f], and my middle name is [name_f]Jolie[/name_f]. People call me LJ all the time, I’ve basically adopted it as my own name.

i don’t go by a nickname anywhere but nameberry but i definitely have that sometimes. i only ever hear my middle name with my first name (aside from the fact that it’s like a top 10 name) so i have the “that’s my name” thing with it, especially if i put it alone.

I go pretty much exclusively by AJ and have for the past 20 years…but at my new job they call me [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] and I always have a moment of hesitation like “who is … ??? oh yeah, that’s me!” lol

That’s so relatable

Yes! I go by a nickname from my middle name so always have a moment of “???” when I need to tell someone my first name in an official setting…

Big mood. I like my full name and it still feels like me but the only people who still use it regularly are my parents so it feels deeply wrong when anybody else uses it.
