Silvia

We currently have four options for our little girl due in just a week: [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], [name_f]Ottavia[/name_f], [name_f]Caterina[/name_f] and [name_f]Silvia[/name_f]. Her middle name will be [name_u]Love[/name_u]. We both really, really love [name_f]Silvia[/name_f], and I dislike it with the y spelling, and its the Italian spelling, which fits with our Italian surname, but as its getting closer, I’m getting worried we’ll always have to correct people spelling it [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], which I would rather avoid.

Would you assume when hearing the name it was spelled [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] or [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]? If you saw [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] written down, would you presume it was a mistake?

If I saw [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] written down I wouldn’t think it was a mistake, but if I heard it I would think it was spelled [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] just because that is the spelling I’m more familiar with.

It’s easy to worry about this now, but so long as most people know that’s how it’s spelt, and you teach your daughter to correct people - most people won’t correct people on spellings, and I think so long as you’re polite about it its a good idea - you’ll be fine!

I automatically spell it [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], but wouldn’t assume [name_f]Silvia[/name_f] was wrong.
