I could NOT be more excited! After months of silence on the topic of girls’ names, my husband has finally agreed to [name]Silvie[/name], my absolute favorite name!! YAY!
I’d like to get some ideas for a middle name. Here are some parameters:
Our last name is [name]Keen[/name], so must not rhyme with it (e.g. no [name]Delphine[/name]).
No long e ending.
Preferably not 1 syllable.
Not [name]Louise[/name] (he hates that name)
Not [name]Viola[/name] (I shudder at its Spanish meaning)
No I, U, O or A initial; E’s not great either.
Here are a few I’ve considered:
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Helena[/name] (Hel-AY-na)
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Beatrix[/name] (husband HATES this but I love it)
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name] (meh)
I would suggest spelling it [name]Sylvie[/name]; otherwise, it’s just a nickname and seems really flimsy to me. [name]Sylvie[/name] is the legitimate French form of [name]Sylvia[/name], while [name]Silvie[/name]'s just strictly a nickname. For middle names, I’d look no further than [name]Helena[/name]-- [name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Helena[/name] is gorgeous! I think any longer name would work well-- [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Marguerite[/name], [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Magdalene[/name], [name]Eloise[/name], etc.
[name]Silvie[/name]'s Spanish, to me. There’s a handful of Brasilian girls downtown that go by [name]Silvie[/name]. Doesn’t bother me. But I think the middle is a place to add some fun, so I’m going to suggest some oddball middles:
[name]Silvie[/name]:
[name]Fenella[/name]
[name]Lilac[/name]
[name]Lavender[/name]
[name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Sidonie[/name]
[name]Valentine[/name] (I like the repeating v sounds!)
[name]Rowena[/name]
[name]Primrose[/name]
[name]Rosalba[/name]
[name]Strawberry[/name]
[name]Violetta[/name]
[name]Roxana[/name]
[name]Pandora[/name]
[name]Rosamund[/name]
[name]Cosima[/name]
[name]Fiammetta[/name]
[name]Guinevere[/name]
[name]Marigold[/name]
[name]Mimosa[/name] (I have [name]Sylvie[/name] [name]Mimosa[/name] [name]Jane[/name] on my long list!)
[name]Vashti[/name]
[name]Ysolde[/name]
[name]Mehitabel[/name]
[name]Raphaela[/name]
[name]Dahlia[/name]
[name]Leonora[/name]
Florimel
[name]Saphira[/name]
[name]Coraline[/name] (cor-a-line)
[name]Genevra[/name]
[name]Natalia[/name]
I agree with irisrose. [name]Sylvie[/name] looks more official, and I’ve only seen that spelling. But maybe it’s just me?
I like [name]Silvie[/name] [name]Helena[/name] best from your suggestions.
[name]How[/name] are:
Hey [name]Lola[/name], how do you pronounce [name]Vashti[/name]? It happens to be the name of the little town in [name]Texas[/name] where my grandmother was born. I had no idea it was a girls’ name! They pronounce the town name Vash-tie. But I’m thinking it could also be Vash-tee?
There is a [name]Vashti[/name] in the Bible (she is in the Book of [name]Esther[/name] - she is not a good character) and I think I’ve usually heard that pronounced Vash-tee when it’s read.
You have so many great suggestions! Can I just share that one of my guilty pleasure ideas is [name]Sylvie[/name]/[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Vidette[/name]? :D. (I prefer spelling [name]Sylvie[/name] for me but have no problem with [name]Silvie[/name]). [name]Love[/name] the Frenchness, love the repeated v’s. [name]Vidette[/name] is on some websites as a female diminutive name taken from [name]David[/name], so it means “beloved”. Anyway it’s probably not for you but just wanted to share!
@katybug - yep: vash-TEE. Book of [name]Esther[/name]. She’s not awful, I think. Simplified: she wouldn’t strip & parade nude for her husband (the king) & his friends. He had her killed and married [name]Esther[/name], who is a regular paragon. I’d much rather use/see [name]Vashti[/name]. What an awesome sound!
I’m so happy for you! [name]Sylvie[/name] is in my top three names and [name]Silvie[/name] is just SO divine. It’s like a little slice of heaven

[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Melinda[/name] (for some reason this is what first came to mind…idk)
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Ramona[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Madeline[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Flora[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Livia[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Margo[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Tallulah[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] Chrysanthemum (way elaborate but kind of cool)
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Philippa[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Jemima[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Gwendolyn[/name]
[name]Silvie[/name] [name]Azalea[/name] (i know it’s an a but it’s so pretty!)
[name]Glad[/name] you liked [name]Vidette[/name] : D. And thanks to the poster who recalled the fuller story of [name]Vashti[/name] - I had her confused with another character. Still not the easiest namesake, but yes, not the worst.
