Simbryt

Last night I saw this name on tv (I think it was a reality show contestant’s wife). I have never heard this name and usually it would not be the “type” of name I would like, but something about it really appealed to me. Very much so.

A quick google search showed that this was not a unique name - definitely more than one woman with this name (and for the record, all of them were african-american) – but it does not show up in the nameberry database.

Does anyone know anything about this name? Specifically, is it pronounced [name]Sim[/name]-[name]Brit[/name] (that’s how I like it), [name]Sim[/name]-Breet (even better!) or [name]Sim[/name]-[name]Bright[/name] (not a fan)?

And while we’re at it, what do you think about it?

For me it has the warm appeal of [name]Simba[/name] the lion cub but with an edge like [name]Bridget[/name]. I can’t stop thinking about it. My only real hesitation is that so many people might think it is made-up, esp. with the “y” spelling.

What a mysterious name! I’m having trouble identifying a parent language, but my instinct would be to pronounce it “[name]Sim[/name]-Breet,” which seems to give it a distinctly Himalayan feeling (if somebody told me this was a real name, pronounced this way, in a real language somewhere in the world, I’d probably guess a northern [name]Indian[/name] dialect or something Sino-Tibetan). Hmm…
Usability: probably not very high. Pronunciation would be a massive issue. This combination of consonants (-mbr) is pretty rare in English and doesn’t read as particularly feminine. If you really like it, though, I think it could make an absolutely amazing middle name.

So interesting! FYI Simbrit gets a few hits as well, one hit is as a surname (I think) of a person with the first name Adesina (very pretty!). Adesina is listed on some sites as Nigerian/Yoruban, so I wonder if Simbrit/Simbryt is from that culture/language as well, which might make some sense given the use in the African American community (and, perhaps, given the similarity to [name]Simba[/name], which is listed as Swahili - but, I dunno, I’m not sure off the top of my head Swahili and Yoruban would be). Another hit for Simbrit has someone claiming on Yahoo Answers that Simbit means one who prays in Punjabi, not sure how seriously to take that one, but it reminds me of PP’s feelings of Sino-Tibetan origin (again, Punjabi might be pretty far from that…but right continent at least).

Hi good day everyone.
I am from the Caribbean, [name_f]Grenada[/name_f] to be exact.
[name_f]My[/name_f] names is Simbriyt not spell the original way as Simbryt the rear or unique or unusual as people will call it. I was given the name after the same TV show everyone else here is talking about, my grandmother and mother was watching and they fall in love with the name. And decide to give me the name with little difference in the spelling. But what I would love most of all is the known the meaning of my name or the original spelling.
