We have just found out we’re expecting a second son. We have a daughter, [name]Priya[/name] and a boy, [name]Theo[/name].
While I still have a favourite name I like ([name]Florin[/name]) I am trying to get a shortlist going so we can meet the baby and see what suits him best.
My grandfathers name was [name]Frederick[/name] but we all called him [name]Fred[/name]. I like the meaning and I love the nickname [name]Freddie[/name] or [name]Teddy[/name] but wondering if it’s too simple to just go with [name]Fred[/name] and not [name]Frederick[/name]. It feels unbalanced since we only used [name]Theo[/name] for our son to go ahead with the full [name]Frederick[/name].
What do you think of [name]Fred[/name]? Too old-mannish? Too short?
The other namesake I’d like to consider is my father [name]Philip[/name] but I don’t like this name (or it’s meaning!). I am assuming [name]Pip[/name] (which my husband likes) is way too short to be taken seriously as a name.
I love [name]Frederick[/name] and [name]Fred[/name], but I would use [name]Fred[/name] on its own without any hesitation (especially if he had a brother [name]Theo[/name]!)
[name]Priya[/name], [name]Theo[/name], and [name]Fred[/name] sound really nice together.
I also like [name]Pip[/name], but I’m not sure it ages well on its own.
I think [name]Fred[/name] on it’s own is fine, there is no need to use [name]Frederick[/name] if you only want to call him [name]Fred[/name] or [name]Freddie[/name], and I think [name]Fred[/name] would work better with [name]Theo[/name]. [name]Pip[/name] is adorable, but I do struggle to see it on a grown man.
Congratulations! I think [name]Fred[/name] is fine, and also recommend [name]Alfred[/name] nn [name]Fred[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name]. It doesn’t feel as long/clunky/mismatched as [name]Frederick[/name].
I love [name]Fred[/name] the way it is. Actually, I started to love [name]Fred[/name] after it turned to be my BF’s dad but no matter.
[name]Fred[/name], [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Priya[/name] make great sibset, lovely choice!
However, I don’t feel great about [name]Frederick[/name]. I can only picture an old [name]German[/name] man with that name but maybe the image would change if I meet a little [name]Frederick[/name]. I like [name]Alfred[/name] nn [name]Fred[/name], but I would go with just [name]Fred[/name], it looks complete without any longer name.
[name]Frederick[/name] is a great name but it does feel a little heavy with [name]Theo[/name]. [name]Fred[/name] can work by itself for sure, but I second [name]Alfred[/name] nn [name]Fred[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name].
If [name]Theo[/name] is [name]Theodore[/name], then [name]Frederick[/name] wouldn’t look mismatched, imo. I’d go with [name]Freddy[/name] as a nickname. I used to babysit a boy named [name]Freddy[/name]. It makes me think of an 8 yo with a pet rat
I prefer Federick with the nickname [name]Fred[/name]. I think it goes fine with [name]Theo[/name]. I agree [name]Pip[/name] is too short for a full name. I think [name]Fred[/name] sounds great! I don’t see it as old mannish. It’s classic.
[name]Don[/name]'t be sorry! I have a somewhat love/hate with it too. Naturally it’s a name I have affection for because it was my Grandfather but I imagine I might not feel the same if he hadn’t been.
For some reason, to me, [name]Fred[/name] feels incomplete on its own. I’d recommend using [name]Frederick[/name] if you’d like to call him [name]Fred[/name], or, better yet, name him [name]Alfred[/name] if you’d prefer something that balances well with [name]Priya[/name] and [name]Theo[/name] while offering nn [name]Fred[/name] or [name]Freddie[/name]. In terms of sib sets, I think the most important thing is what you call them, not necessarily their given names (so to me, the full names [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Frederick[/name] work just fine if [name]Frederick[/name] is known as [name]Fred[/name]). I love [name]Philip[/name] nn [name]Pip[/name] and think it balances well with [name]Priya[/name] and [name]Theo[/name], but definitely don’t see [name]Pip[/name] working on its own.
I am usually against nicknames as names, but I think [name]Fred[/name] works. Especially with [name]Theo[/name].
I do think [name]Alfred[/name] would be a good choice as a compromise - doesn’t seem as out of place with [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Alfred[/name] nn [name]Fred[/name] vs [name]Theo[/name] and [name]Frederick[/name] nn [name]Fred[/name].
