Sister for Caraline

Hi there, so we just had our anatomy scan and found out we are expecting another girl. I’m a little sad because I love boy names and have had a boy name I have wanted to use forever. But alas, we have to find another girl name which proved to be challenging for us last time. However, I’m glad to know what to focus on now, and we’d like to settle on a name sooner rather than later this time! Our first daughters name is Caraline Hope (Caroline with an a) and I like how it is classic, down to earth, spunky, cute, yet able to grow with her all at the same time and I’d like to find something similar. I like the thought of doing something a little Christmas-y since we are due around then. Here’s our ideas so far…

Marlowe (a name we have liked for a long time, just a little more unisex than I like maybe and not a lot of great nickname options - I don’t like Marley)

Felicity (cute but maybe a little formal?)

Eleanor (feels a little too fancy but I’ve always thought it was pretty)

Maggie (shorter but cute…maybe too cutesy?)

Juniper (Maybe too whimsical but I like June or Juni for nickname - not my husband’s favorite)

Dakota (more out there but I’ve always liked it)

Hadley (really like this one but she will have a cousin named Hadassah nicknamed Haddie)

Middle names I like with them…

Marlowe Mary
Felicity ??
Maggie Noel
Dakota Pearl
Dakota Noel
Dakota Promise
Eleanor Eden
Hadley Pearl
Hadley Promise

I would appreciate some outside perspective, I’d like it to sound cute with Caraline. Also any other recommendations welcomed.

Thank you

Congratulations on baby #2! :tada:

I understand some of the gender disappointment. I felt something similar with my second, and it’s hard not to feel guilty about it. It’s totally normal!

With [name_f]Caraline[/name_f], I love [name_f]Hadley[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] best!

  • [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]: I think [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] hits the classic side you love about [name_f]Caraline[/name_f]! Some of Eleanor’s nicknames can hit the fun side of the name, such as [name_f]Nori[/name_f]. [name_f]Nori[/name_f] is too cute!

  • [name_f]Hadley[/name_f]: I think [name_f]Hadley[/name_f] hits the spunky and fun side of [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] that you love! I don’t think [name_f]Hadassah[/name_f] and [name_f]Hadley[/name_f] are too close for cousins, but [name_f]Hadley[/name_f] still may not be the best choice if you would be really bummed to not be able to use [name_f]Haddie[/name_f]. Have you thought about the name [name_f]Hallie[/name_f]? I know a couple people who have just used it, and I love it!

  • [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]: [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] also matches well for my tastes, but if you are unsure because it feels cutesy, so you like either of the longer form names for it, like [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]? This also go great with your first daughter’s name! [name_f]Margo[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] are other spelling variations.

As for [name_m]Christmas[/name_m] names, [name_f]Clara[/name_f] is one that is a pretty subtle nod to [name_m]Christmas[/name_m], but is a fun option because of the main character in The Nutcracker :snowflake: It is pretty similar to [name_f]Caraline[/name_f], but I think it could work as a middle name. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f], and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] all sound good to me.

If you go with [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f], instead of her middle name being [name_f]Mary[/name_f], why not have [name_f]Mary[/name_f] be her nickname?

For [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], I would probably use it as a nickname for a longer name like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] or [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f].

[name_f]Sister[/name_f] for [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] [name_f]Hope[/name_f]:

[name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Juniper[/name_f] [name_m]Cassidy[/name_m]
[name_m]Dakota[/name_m] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_m]Noel[/name_m]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] [name_f]Eden[/name_f]
[name_f]Angelina[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_f]Joy[/name_f] [name_f]Hadley[/name_f]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] [name_f]Dove[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f] [name_f]Nicole[/name_f]

I like:

[name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] - charming and sweet - nicknames could me [name_f]Mara[/name_f], [name_f]Lolo[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f] - or [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] / [name_f]Mae[/name_f] with middle [name_f]Mary[/name_f]

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] - this actually feels sparky and playful to me. [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] would be cute.

[name_f]Maggie[/name_f] - cute and confident

[name_f]Juniper[/name_f] - pretty and zippy

[name_f]Hadley[/name_f] - it does feel charming and well matched, but maybe too much with [name_f]Hadassah[/name_f], if you see them often

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] - classic but fresh still - and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Eden[/name_f] is fun

With [name_f]Caraline[/name_f], I like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] best I think!

A few other variations:

[name_f]Caraline[/name_f] and…

[name_f]Elena[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]

[name_f]Elora[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]

[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f]

[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_m]Noel[/name_m] (Dodie)

[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] (Lettie)

[name_f]Piper[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] (Pip)

[name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] (Jett, [name_f]Lettie[/name_f], Jules)

Congratulations on your new arrival!

From your list I like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] best with [name_f]Caraline[/name_f]. Some other options based off [name_m]Christmas[/name_m] and your other names:

Holly… similar to [name_f]Hadley[/name_f] but more festive and feminine

Mercy… cute nn of [name_f]Meri[/name_f] so double the festive feel and similar to [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f]

[name_f]Esperance[/name_f]: means hope so nice link with her sister and cute nn of [name_f]Essie[/name_f], hope is a lovely seasonal theme too

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]: so sparkley and means good news so festive and cute nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f] also on season ( I say [name_f]Leen[/name_f] as the ending not [name_f]Line[/name_f], so hopefully that’s different to your Daughter’s name (which I pronounce as [name_f]Caro[/name_f]- lyn I’m an Aussie so apologies if that’s not how you’d say it)

[name_f]Apricity[/name_f]: left field but its similar to [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] but with the stunning meaning of the warmth of the sun in winter…

[name_f]Bethany[/name_f]: inspired by [name_f]Bethlehem[/name_f]

I also love winter inspired names like:

[name_f]Lumi[/name_f]
[name_f]Snow[/name_f]
[name_m]Frost[/name_m]
[name_f]Tesni[/name_f]

and some favourite [name_f]Star[/name_f] inspired names (Christmas inspired again)

[name_f]Seren[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Etoile[/name_f]
[name_f]Soraya[/name_f]

All the best!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
We names our daughter [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] ! And we had [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] & [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] on our lists too. [name_f]My[/name_f] MIL really wanted us to use [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] because that was her girl name and she had all boys.

The names you have picked are beautiful.

[name_f]Marlowe[/name_f]- I think there are a lot of other nicknames you can go with . [name_f]Mary[/name_f] , [name_f]Lo[/name_f] , [name_f]Mae[/name_f] , [name_m]Arie[/name_m] .

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] - I don’t know about formal but it does t really have an intuitive Nickname. Filly , Lyss/ Liss, Itty .

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is beautiful but [name_f]Elle[/name_f] names are wildly popular . If that doesn’t bug you that I would say this is my favourite. [name_f]Ella[/name_f] , [name_f]Lea[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f] , Lena/ [name_f]Leni[/name_f]

[name_f]Maggie[/name_f] was a conte [name_f]Dee[/name_f] for us. I prefer a longer version that can grow and change though. [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] , [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f], [name_m]Montgomery[/name_m]

[name_f]Juniper[/name_f] feels different style wise but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. [name_f]Juno[/name_f] , [name_f]Junie[/name_f], [name_f]June[/name_f] are adorable and it hits that subtle [name_m]Christmas[/name_m] vibe

[name_m]Dakota[/name_m] and [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] feel very American to me. I worry that it paints you into a corner should you have three. [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] would be cute though if you had a third !

[name_f]Hadley[/name_f] is really cute ! I would probably avoid the [name_f]Haddie[/name_f] nickname but , [name_f]Addy[/name_f] , [name_m]Lee[/name_m] , [name_f]Haley[/name_f] , [name_f]Hallie[/name_f] could all be cute nicknames while avoiding run ins with [name_f]Hadassah[/name_f]

Other name suggestions :

[name_f]Eve[/name_f] / [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f]:
[name_m]Christmas[/name_m] [name_f]Eve[/name_f] may be a little less subtle but I think [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] and Evelyn/ [name_f]Eve[/name_f] are beautiful together. [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f] [name_f]Juniper[/name_f] or [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f] [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f]

Christy/ [name_f]Christine[/name_f] / [name_f]Christa[/name_f] : Maybe too alliterative but I think really work with sounding good with [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] and having that subtle nod to [name_m]Christmas[/name_m]. I also think that popularly won’t be and issue

[name_f]Chelsea[/name_f] : I don’t know why I feel so strongly about this name but it just feels right to suggest for you . [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] , [name_f]Cece[/name_f] could be a cute nickname

[name_f]Angelica[/name_f] - I think this may be cute with [name_f]Caraline[/name_f] and a subtle nod to [name_m]Christmas[/name_m] / Angels . [name_f]Angie[/name_f] , [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Anica[/name_f] could be cute nicknames

Some assorted thoughts on a festive name for your spunky second daughter:

Mary Louise nn Marlowe or Milou (Mary is a stunning first name imo)

Eleanor Hadley nn Nellie/Nora/Leni

Eleanor Ivy

Genevieve Winter nn Evie/Neve

Margaret Noelle (prefer this spelling for a girl) nn Maggie/Meg/Daisy/Peggy

Felicity Pearl (I just don’t love the nicknames but maybe Flip, Flick, Floss?)

Tabitha Holly

Ruby Eleanor

Like the suggestion of [name_f]Holly[/name_f].
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] isn’t too formal imo. [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] would be lovely I agree with pp.

I think [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] are perfect options for Caraline’s sister! [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] is my favorite. It’s refreshing because I’m not hearing it much anymore, and I like it with the middle name [name_m]Noel[/name_m].

[name_f]My[/name_f] top 3 from your list are…

  • [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_m]Noel[/name_m] (somebody else said this, but if you’re worried about [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] being too cutesy, you could maybe use [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as a first name? I think [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] sounds great on its own, though)
  • [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Eden[/name_f] (Eleanor also has a lot of great nickname options - [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], Nora…)
  • [name_f]Hadley[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f] (Hope and [name_f]Promise[/name_f] as your daughters middle names would be so cute together!)

[name_f]My[/name_f] thoughts on your list

[name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] ~ I’ve always been a fan of [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] I think the name is stylish, literacy choice and I love the overall sound with that prominent O sound. However I would think boy next too Caralin3 I just would imagine something less unisex with such a traditional sister. I think [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is a little bit of a tongue twister.

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] ~ ahhh gosh lovely name! [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] is a beautiful virtue name that feels glamorous and sparkly. I think she provides a slight nod to [name_m]Christmas[/name_m] along with providing a virtue tie between the sisters. I think she’s lovely!

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] ~ a name packed with history she’s dignified, classic, feminine and with big sister Caralin3 provides a southern [name_f]Belle[/name_f] feel. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Eden[/name_f] is cool.

[name_f]Maggie[/name_f] ~ I absolutely love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]! Honestly championed for this name as a middle name for my daughter but was vetoed. She’s so warm, outdoorsy and fun. I think [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] works well with C and I love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_m]Noel[/name_m]. Prefer [name_f]Noelle[/name_f].

[name_f]Juniper[/name_f] ~ providing a Christmassy flair I think this name is lovely. She’s massively grown on me and I completely see the appeal. I think [name_f]Juniper[/name_f] works well with Caralin3 the overall sibling set providing a cowgirl flair that I love. I did think maybe [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Juniper[/name_f] could be cool so wanted to suggest that.

[name_m]Dakota[/name_m] ~ I’m not keen on this one culturally insensitive choice that just doesn’t have an appealing sound. However I would scratch off the list due to be insensitive to those of [name_m]Dakota[/name_m] heritage.

[name_f]Hadley[/name_f] ~ providing a cowgirl flair to your sibling set she is a nice name very soft and outdoorsy but with your nieces name I wouldn’t use.

From your list I love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] + [name_f]Juniper[/name_f].

You’ve had lots of lovely suggestions so count any repeats as me being in agreement with the berries

Caralin3 Hop3 and…

[name_f]Verity[/name_f] ~ [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Christabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f] ~ [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] ~ [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] ~ [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] ~ [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] ~ [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Norah[/name_f] ~ [name_f]Norah[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] [name_f]Juniper[/name_f]! [name_m]Will[/name_m] think on that one. I like a cowgirl flair…if it was a boy he would have been [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. Hoping I get to use it some day.

What do you guys think of [name_f]Heidi[/name_f]?

I really like the name Heidi - it’s an immediately likeable & happy name, while also being solid and established. I suggested Holly above but Heidi would be great as a non L name (ie complements Caraline but distinct sounds).

Caraline Hope & Heidi _____ would be a fantastic pair!

Some middles:

Heidi Noel/Noelle (prob my fave!)
Heidi Marlowe
Heidi Promise
Heidi Evelyn
Heidi Joy
Heidi Faith
Heidi Lucy
Heidi Kate
Heidi Grace
Heidi Maeve
Heidi Pearl (or a bit bumpy?)
Heidi Elspeth /Elsbeth

(You could also use May or Rose but seem a little obvious?)

Thanks for the suggestions! Last night I thought of [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] Bell/Belle…a subtle nod to [name_m]Christmas[/name_m] and my dad always called my sister [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] [name_m]Bell[/name_m], so that could be a cute nod to her as well.

[name_f]My[/name_f] top 3 from your list are [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Juniper[/name_f].

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f] is bright, joyful, colorful and charismatic. It’s traditional but definitely not too formal. To me, it only transmits good feelings. [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_m]Noel[/name_m], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Juniper[/name_f] would be stunning.

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is lovely, elegant and gorgeous. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Eden[/name_f] is a great idea. I also like [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] [name_f]Promise[/name_f].

[name_f]Juniper[/name_f] is unexpected, fresh and lively. [name_f]Juniper[/name_f] [name_m]Noel[/name_m] and [name_f]Juniper[/name_f] [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] sound amazing.

Considering [name_f]Juniper[/name_f], [name_f]Marlowe[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], perhaps [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] or [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]? I would like to suggest [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Eden[/name_f].
