Hello,
We’re considering the name [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] for our baby if it’s a girl. Our other children are [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] and [name_m]Conrad[/name_m]. We like old-fashioned names that are unique but not weird.
I’m really biased as to the [name_m]French[/name_m] way of looking at [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] (which, honestly, is not very flattering at all), so no, I don’t really see [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] fitting well with [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] and [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] (which feel very vintage-ey and very strong, and yet clearly masculine or feminine). [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], on the other hand, feels almost too cutesy. I blame my [name_m]French[/name_m] best friend and her little sister for indoctrinating me with their views, but the vast majority of [name_m]French[/name_m] people almost derisively roll their eyes at [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], and think it’s terrifyingly cutesy, because of the [name_u]Les[/name_u] Mis character. The name was created by [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] to be the most cutesy, adorable name, and not really to be taken seriously? And of course the English world seems to love it. But the [name_m]French[/name_m] can’t take it seriously, and after hearing all the [name_m]French[/name_m] people in my life talk about it, I can’t take it seriously anymore, either. Which is a shame, because it’s a lovely name, and it wouldn’t face any of those issues in an English-speaking country. If you aren’t concerned with [name_m]French[/name_m] reactions, and/or you don’t really plan on spending time in [name_f]France[/name_f], feel free to ignore it, because otherwise, [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], [name_m]Conrad[/name_m], and [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] are lovely (although I dislike that [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] and [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] are a little matchy in their beginning sounds), and [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is beautiful. I think Cozy and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] are cute nns, too.
I think [name_f]Lisette[/name_f] would be a lovely alternative if you are put off by it–very similar cadence to [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], and also a variant of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
Huge [name_u]Les[/name_u] Mis fan, but I always think [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] is a bit wimpy compared to [name_f]Eponine[/name_f].
I do agree that [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] and [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] are quite matchy, your other child may feel left out.
My favourite ette name is [name_f]Minette[/name_f] because I adore the character of Loveday [name_f]Minette[/name_f] in The [name_m]Little[/name_m] White Horse
I think [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] sounds really great with [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] and [name_m]Conrad[/name_m]! I slightly prefer [name_f]Colette[/name_f], but [name_f]Colette[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] a little “L” heavy. [name_m]Said[/name_m] all that to say, you’ve chosen a great name!
To the [name_m]French[/name_m]-speaking part of my brain, [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] is really frilly and sweet and almost insubstantial (though I don’t have as strong a reaction to it as @ashthedreamer above). To the you-live-in-[name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u] part of my brain, it’s a sweet, dainty, unusual name. [name_f]Cosette[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] flows well and it fits fine with [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] and [name_m]Conrad[/name_m], though I feel they’re both kind of weightier than it is.
If you’re interested in considering any alternatives, you might like [name_f]Cosima[/name_f].
I quite like [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]. It is unique but familiar which is the same vibe [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] and [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] give off.
Sorry, I really don’t like the name [name_f]Cosette[/name_f]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] in English cosset means to treat as a pet, to pamper and coddle. In addition to that is the cultural misappropriation of the [name_m]French[/name_m] name that’s not very flattering.
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], [name_m]Conrad[/name_m], and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] is a great sibset!
I also think [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], Roseline, or other elegant classics would be a good fit.
