Sister for Henrietta, Beatrice, George

Expecting baby #4 - a girl! My first three are: Henrietta Louise, Beatrice Margaret and George Francis. My first pick would probably be Jane but I think that’s out because my father in law’s first wife (not my husband’s mother) was named Jane. Dorothy is also out. Our last name is two syllables ending in “er.” and it’s kind of a harsh sounding German last name.

What does everyone think about Mary Elizabeth? Both are family names (my grandmothers were Mary and Elizabeth, and my middle name is Elizabeth). Is that too religious sounding, or does it just sound classic? Second choice at the moment is probably Alice (maybe also Alice Elizabeth?) But I’m also open to other suggestions. Although I also love flowery and more elaborate names like Clementine, Marigold, etc. I think I’m leaning towards more simple this time around.

I prefer classic names - Edwardian even - that aren’t necessarily “common” but they don’t need to be almost unused by others. I would say that for girl names I’d probably prefer them to be out of the top 100 (and certainly top 50) but that’s about it. So no Ava, Olivia, Sophia, Charlotte, etc. Alice is hovering close to the top 50 I believe - do we think Alice is going to become the next Ava? Also for Mary - it’s in the low 100s on the SSA website now - for some reason I think it’s less likely that Mary rises in popularity anytime soon vs. Alice, but any thoughts?

Your children have such beautiful names! :yellow_heart: I think [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] absolutely works with their names – I wouldn’t say it feels particularly religious, just very classic! I prefer [name_f]Mary[/name_f] to [name_f]Alice[/name_f], but you can’t go wrong with either one. That said, I agree with you that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is less likely to rise in popularity! [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is a big hit all over the world right now, whereas [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is pretty much the ultimate classic, it’s not a name I ever see suddenly becoming extremely trendy!

I’m tempted to suggest you something equally classic but a little more adventurous, something to bridge the flowery [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] with the safer, but still very lovely [name_u]George[/name_u]! Maybe something like…

[name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] / [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Colette[/name_f]
[name_f]Celia[/name_f]
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f] / [name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_u]Esme[/name_u]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_u]Florence[/name_u]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] / [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f] / [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]

I love your children’s names!

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is a classic, beautiful name. I would not consider it religious because even if the name [name_f]Mary[/name_f] does have biblical connotations, it’s been used so much that I would see it more as timeless and strong.
I agree that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is less likely to rise in popularity then [name_f]Alice[/name_f]. [name_f]Alice[/name_f], while very sweet, is probably going to become more common in the following years. I personally prefer [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and think that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is a perfect choice!

That being said, I also think that another, longer, slightly more frilly but serious name would fit her sisters nicely. If you are looking for some other suggestions, maybe:

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (as a first)
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Florence[/name_u]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]

Any of these with the middle [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f] would be gorgeous!

I also agree that [name_f]Alice[/name_f] will have more climbing legs for scaling the charts than [name_f]Mary[/name_f] right now. I prefer the flow of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but I still think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] would be a really great name for your fourth child

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] is close to [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] IMO and I would predict [name_f]Alice[/name_f] will trend upward but we won’t know until they post the results for 2023.

A few suggestions mixed with your names:

[name_f]Ethel[/name_f] [name_u]Jeanne[/name_u] (form of Jane)

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is very strong and classic! I like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] too, but it is more popular (plus Beatrice/Alice could be rhymey?)

I’ll through in the suggestions of:

[name_f]Marianne[/name_f] / [name_u]Marian[/name_u]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f]
[name_u]Joan[/name_u]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Judith[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Rachel[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was that it might be fun to have an “a” ending to go with [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], since both [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] & [name_u]George[/name_u] end in “e”.

[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Adrina[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_f]Bettina[/name_f]
[name_f]Carla[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_f]Edwina[/name_f]
[name_f]Johanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Nina[/name_f]
[name_f]Sonia[/name_f]

You have some beautiful names already… I love [name_u]George[/name_u] [name_u]Francis[/name_u] as a pairing so much. I also have [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in my middle-names list but will more likely go with [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f].

So for you, names I would say blendx with your existing choices…
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] certainly but may be also on an upward trend… so perhaps [name_f]Imelda[/name_f] or:

[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Lenore[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonora[/name_f]
[name_f]Corisande[/name_f]
[name_f]Adeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Josette[/name_f]
[name_f]Rowenna[/name_f]
[name_f]Renee[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
[name_u]Marian[/name_u]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Alouette[/name_f]
[name_f]Celine[/name_f]
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f]
[name_u]Camille[/name_u]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Mikayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f]
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Jessamine[/name_f]

I really like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] with your other kids. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is also nice but it is more trendy and the similar ending with [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] bugs me a little.

[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_u]George[/name_u], and…
[name_f]Francine[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_u]Florence[/name_u]
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]
[name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]
[name_f]Annemarie[/name_f]
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f]
[name_f]Kathleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Pauline[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Nadine[/name_f]
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u]
[name_u]Marian[/name_u]
[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], though both do sound more common in comparison to your other three, of the two I like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] better

Other options, sorry for repeats:

[name_f]Irene[/name_f]
[name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_u]Marie[/name_u]
[name_f]Nancy[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] / [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Philomena[/name_f]
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]
[name_f]Judith[/name_f]
[name_f]Anita[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Minnie[/name_f]

I love your names so far, they’re great.

I really like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - when I had my daughter, the doctor thought I’d said her name was [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and I’ve often thought since that it’s such a quaint, delightful yet steely, self-assured and dignified name. I wouldn’t worry about the added associations, with your others it just seems like an Edwardian (as you say) name with connections to the Crown/religion as names did at that time. Most will just see it as storybook sweet!

I much prefer [name_f]Mary[/name_f] to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] - mostly because I don’t warm to the name [name_f]Alice[/name_f] (I am close to three wonderful Alice’s and still don’t like the name) and, more relevantly, I’d probably not use it anyway after [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] - they seem to jar when you read them out as a list.

Other names you might like:

[name_f]Marianne[/name_f] (also to make it a little closer in length to the others - but still quite tailored).
[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] / [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] (Daisy)
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_u]Camille[/name_u]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] (Pippa)
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Leonore[/name_f]
[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]
[name_f]Nancy[/name_f]

But I really like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] - and you could use Mimi/Molly/Mamie/Maisie as nicknames to bring in some extra Edwardian embellishment.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps! :sparkles:

Huge congratulations :tada:

Gosh I love [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]! [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is such a sweet, classic, smart, refreshing classic that feels so enduring. Personally I do not see [name_f]Mary[/name_f] increasing in popularity but I’m in the UK where she sits at #318. I think because [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is such an enduring classic she doesn’t feel overtly religious and sounds beautifully cohesive with your kiddos. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is such a regal classic that oozes grace and strength. I love the overall sound of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] she’s definitely not too religious and I think she’s beautiful.

You’ve had lots of fab suggestions so count any repeats as me being in agreement with the berries

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps :lemon:

I really love Mary here (and also in general too!). Mary is more common than Henrietta & Beatrice, but it is less common than George. Mary also appears to be less common than the charts suggest, as Mary is one of those names where there are a decent percentage of people out there with it who go by their middle names. So you really don’t meet that many kids and teens named Mary who actually go by just Mary, not Mary __, or their middle. I’m personally always positively delighted to spot a young Mary. Mary is the classics of all classics for a reason – she’s just so delightful, with so much history behind her. Mary is short, and is in my opinion one of the few shorter girls names that can truly hold her own next to the most complex elaborations.

Edit: Other ideas (but really my vote goes to Mary as she’s magnificent):
Helen
Joan (if this isn’t too close to Jane)
Cecilia / Celia (these are distinct names, and I personally slightly prefer Celia, but Cecilia could shorten to Celia)
Miriam
Claudia
Nadia

I think I like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] better with [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], and [name_u]George[/name_u]? [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is beautiful but I don’t find it as likable in nearly every circumstance. I think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is sweet and storybook and timeless; [name_f]Mary[/name_f] I only truly like in certain circumstances, though, and find it more dated than not, mostly. It certainly would be unusual for her age but I don’t love it myself? I wish I did, but I just don’t, sadly! I think because of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] being Jesus’ mother’s name, it has especially Catholic ties, and feels more religious than something obviously Biblical (like [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] or Elijah) - [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] and [name_u]Elijah[/name_u] feel more versatile, just because they’re used more? [name_f]Mary[/name_f] just isn’t used to the same degree as either of them. But I wouldn’t say a [name_f]Mary[/name_f] had to be religious, just that I would probably expect her to come from a Catholic family, given my experience with the name.

As far as Edwardian goes… if you’re looking for other options, what about:

[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] (feels a bit too trendy for you but I love it in general and I think she makes a great sister for a [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] & Beatrice!)
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwendoline[/name_f]
[name_u]Florence[/name_u]
[name_f]Irene[/name_f]
[name_f]Maude[/name_f] (I think I like Maud(e) style-wise a bit better with [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] & [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] than [name_f]Mary[/name_f], as well?)
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Lydia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]

For what it’s worth, I don’t think [name_f]Alice[/name_f] will get into the top 10, but I could be wrong. I do think it’ll take a lot longer for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] to get back up into the top 10 than it will take [name_f]Alice[/name_f], though.

Good luck!

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] sounds beautiful with your kids names! It’s a simple but regal and sophisticated name. I’m usually not a fan of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] because in my country a very high percentage of girls and women are named [name_u]Maria[/name_u]. In consequence, their first name is frequrntly ignored to avoid confusion with other family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers. Mary’s situation is a little bit different. In English-speaking countries, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is not overused as a first name. Nowadays, it may be considered memorable, peaceful and exquisite.

It would be refreshing to see [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] as a first name too! It’s majestic, gentle and graceful. I think [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] works perfectly with your children’s names. I like that it is a family name. I don’t know if your oldest children have nickname, but [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] offers various interesting options that can feel classic, vintage, romantic, unisex, unique and/or modern (Eli, [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], [name_f]Liz[/name_f], [name_f]Lilibet[/name_f], [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], [name_f]Iza[/name_f], [name_f]Betty[/name_f], etc). Basically, I think it works with many different styles and having alternatives is always fun, from my point of view.

Henriett@, Be@trice, G3orge & [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: have my vote!

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] is one of my favorite names, so it always gets my vote and approval. It’s friendly, elegant, sweet and delicate. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is a marvelous name.
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is pretty! I also like [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f], but maybe these two options need a little more sparkle. In my opinion, [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] would sound magical, happy and colorful.

As alternative to [name_f]Jane[/name_f], you may also like [name_u]Jean[/name_u], Joan/ Joanna/ [name_f]Joanne[/name_f], [name_u]June[/name_u], [name_u]Jade[/name_u], [name_u]Anne[/name_u], [name_f]Annie[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f].
