Sister for Idris

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there! We have just welcomed our firstborn into this world and named him [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m]. I can’t help but already dream about future sibling names. I really like [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] as a potential brother for [name_m]Idris[/name_m] (both have Welsh origins and I think they sound good together), but I am not sure which girl’s name would pair well with [name_m]Idris[/name_m].

My husband has always adored the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and we had selected the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] for this baby had it been a girl. I can’t help but now think that this girls name may not pair well with our son [name_m]Idris[/name_m] if we end up having a daughter in the future. Ideally I’d like the name we choose to be stylistically similiar to [name_m]Idris[/name_m].

Any suggestions? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] can still be used in the future? Maybe I’m overthinking this and it isn’t a big deal at all. I should add that although we like the name [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] as the mn, it has no sentimental meaning and I think we would be open to something else if that makes a difference.

Thank you!!

I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] could be used. It’s more familiar but not popular and like [name_m]Idris[/name_m], it holds a kind of mythical yet grounded feel.

Some other names that might work as a middle (though I like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f])

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Nerys[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Eira[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] Eirlys
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Alys[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Seren[/name_u]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Elara[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Eluned[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Anouk[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_u]Hero[/name_u]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Luella[/name_f]

Some other names that could work with [name_m]Idris[/name_m]:
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f]
[name_f]Deryn[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Lowri[/name_f]
[name_f]Zara[/name_f]
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Asha[/name_f]

As a side note, [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_m]Idris[/name_m] are brilliant together .

I wouldn’t necessarily call [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_m]Idris[/name_m] stylistically the same, but they are both old but familiar names, so I don’t think they’re crazy different either. For what it’s worth, I have a [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and I love [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] and [name_m]Idris[/name_m], and they’re on my boys list, even though I probably wouldn’t use [name_m]Idris[/name_m] because it sounds very weird with the surname. I can easily see [name_m]Idris[/name_m], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] as siblings.

If you wanted to give [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] a Welsh middle name, I think that would be more than enough of a tie-in to the Welsh theme you want. And unless you would plan on giving [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] another Welsh name as a middle, I think you could just use whatever you want.

Also, should you have four, I think [name_m]Idris[/name_m], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], and [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] sound great together!

I agree with previous poster. I feel [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] pairs well with [name_m]Idris[/name_m] but I’m not loving [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] as a mn. Also love the suggestion of [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Elena[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Leona[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]

Thank you for all your support in still being able to use [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. I truly didn’t consider future sibling names for [name_m]Idris[/name_m] when choosing his name. Otherwise I may have chosen [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] to be the first child’s name as I think it pairs better with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. However, if I end up having another son, I think that [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] is a cuter younger sibling name with its nn potentials!

Perhaps I will choose a Welsh mn for [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] to tie it into [name_m]Idris[/name_m] better. I would prefer the mn to not start with an ‘E’ as I do not like how the ‘e’ at the end of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] runs into it. I do like the name [name_f]Maren[/name_f]/ Merin as a mn also (I think one of these spellings is a Welsh name?). Does anyone know?

And if my husband would go for it, I would happily call a little girl [name_f]Freya[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] as I think the brevity and sound of this name works well with [name_m]Idris[/name_m].

Any other thoughts would be very welcome!

I think I’ve got it! [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Nia[/name_f]! [name_f]Nia[/name_f] (pronounced knee-ah) is a Welsh name meaning ‘bright’ which fits nicely with the meaning of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. Coincidentally it contains the same letters used in [name_m]Idris[/name_m]’ middle name, [name_m]Ian[/name_m], and also has the same first 3 letters of my husband’s name which is [name_u]Niall[/name_u]! [name_m]How[/name_m] perfect is that?

That’s adorable! I love the connections between [name_f]Nia[/name_f], [name_m]Ian[/name_m] and [name_u]Niall[/name_u]! Congratulations for that choice, it is definitely a perfect option for [name_m]Idris[/name_m]’ little sister in the future.

[name_m]Idris[/name_m] is such a great name! It was on our shortlist for a boy. Names with multiple origins are cool, and it’s neat that it means “interpreter” in Arabic as well as the Welsh meaning. I’m curious - do you pronounce it ID-riss or EYE-driss?

I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is certainly completely good with [name_m]Idris[/name_m]! I don’t think siblings’ names should dictate what each child is named anyway. We were also considering [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] and it’s another -be name that seems to suit [name_m]Idris[/name_m], and for some reason I think [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] fits in with [name_m]Idris[/name_m] really well.

I think the [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is a lovely name. I would name a sister for [name_m]Idris[/name_m] something like [name_m]Alban[/name_m]. Perhaps [name_m]Alban[/name_m] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]?

textrovert- we pronounce his name Id-riss. Thank you, we love his name too! I agree with you that [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] is a great name and pairs well with [name_m]Idris[/name_m]. I think it helps that both are 5 letter names and both contain ‘s’ and ‘i’.
