Sister for Lily and Vinny

Hello,
We are expecting #3, a girl, in a few months and having trouble coming up with names. Her sister’s name is [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] ([name_f]Lily[/name_f]) [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and her brother’s name is [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] ([name_u]Vinny[/name_u]) [name_u]James[/name_u].

We are considering using the name [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] as an “honor” middle name, as one grandmother’s name is [name_u]Maria[/name_u] and the other [name_f]Annette[/name_f], but this isn’t a must have, more like if it works and sounds nice then why not. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband is not sold on [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] as a first name, though I would consider it.

Some names we have on our list, in no particular order are:
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Marianne[/name_f] (see above)
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabella[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f]

To me these are all great names, but for some reason nothing really feels right. I keep thinking I’m missing “the one”…so I’ve come to the forums for some inspiration  Any help is appreciated.

EDIT (final choice):
Our Isabella Marianne is now 8 months old and her name suits her just right. I thought I’d post to let people know our final choice. We mostly call her Izzy :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Firstly congratulations :partying_face::partying_face:

My initial thought was [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] with the nickname [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]. I think [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] would be a great option she’s feminine, elegant and very classic with the more youthful nickname of [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] that works [name_f]Lily[/name_f] & [name_u]Vinny[/name_u]. I also like that [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] is connected to her sister through [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]’s middle name [name_f]Frances[/name_f]. [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is gorgeous!

Moving away from [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] I love from your list for your sibling set [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] & [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. I think you need a name of length with an obvious nickname to stylistically work which rules out [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] in my eyes. I think [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] feels to trendy and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is another floral name which I think doesn’t work that well with [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] as the brother name. [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is gorgeous but due to your husband reservations I wouldn’t use the name. From the names I’ve said that work the best my favourite is [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]’ I think [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] works beautifully and has the nickname which is ideal.

Such a thoughtful response, thank you tori101.

I think you need a name of length with an obvious nickname to stylistically work… This nails it and is most likely why, even though I really like [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f], I just can’t commit to either of them. I agree on [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]…they kind of got put on the list as a whim and I didn’t want to remove but more move up/down.

I may still try to work on the husband with regard to [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]. I love the name, but I’m not a fan of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as a nickname and would lean towards [name_f]Annie[/name_f]…but that would be alliterative with our last name that starts with “A”. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it’s one “concern”. I may just have to satisfy myself with using it as a middle name, and that’s fine because it seems to work well in the middle.

I really like [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], but have never been a huge fan of [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] as a nickname though it would fit in near perfectly with her siblings (who sometimes get called [name_f]Lil[/name_f] and [name_m]Vin[/name_m], so I could see [name_f]Elle[/name_f] working as a nickname as well). I’m gonna have to think on that one, and I’m gonna let your other suggestions marinate as well. Sometimes you just have to let a name turn around in your head for awhile and pretty soon something just clicks.

Thanks again for your reply!

I like [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] or [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. They would sound good with [name_f]Marianne[/name_f].

I also love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. You could do [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] or [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Annette[/name_f] actually sounds really pretty.

Other suggestions: [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] and

Virginia “[name_f]Ginny[/name_f]”
[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] “[name_f]Liv[/name_f]”
[name_f]Helena[/name_f] “[name_f]Lainey[/name_f]”
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f] “[name_f]Nattie[/name_f]”
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] “[name_f]Evie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Yvette[/name_f] “[name_f]Evie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] “[name_f]Eva[/name_f]”
[name_u]Eden[/name_u] “[name_f]Edie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Giselle[/name_f] “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]”
[name_u]Elia[/name_u] “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] “[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] “[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] “[name_f]Jenny[/name_f]”
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] “[name_f]Dolly[/name_f]”
[name_f]Alodia[/name_f] “Lodie”
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f] “[name_u]Allie[/name_u]”

I cant think of nicknames for these but I also really like these with [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_u]Vinny[/name_u]:

Maisie
[name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Capri[/name_f]
[name_f]Sienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Hallie[/name_f]
[name_f]Delia[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]

Your older kids’ names are lovely, and you have a great list! [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] really does seem like the perfect middle (that is, if your husband can’t get on board with it as a first, because I love that idea too!). One other thought on that–do you like [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f]? [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f] called [name_f]Anna[/name_f] (or [name_f]Annie[/name_f], but maybe that’s too close to [name_u]Vinny[/name_u]?) would be so sweet with your sibset! It could also make another middle name option for names that don’t flow as well with [name_f]Marianne[/name_f].

Because [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_u]Vinny[/name_u] both go by nicknames for longer names, I agree with @tori101 that I like the idea of continuing that pattern for a third baby (as much as I love both [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f]!). I feel enthusiastic enough about [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] as a middle that I’m shying away from [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. I actually like almost all of the names on your list quite a lot, but my favorites from what’s left are [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is my overall favorite because [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f] seem a little close to me. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] “[name_f]Bea[/name_f]” would fit beautifully, and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is a great combo!

A few more suggestions (repeats are seconds!):

Amelia
[name_f]Camilla[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

Hi there.

Lillian & [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] give me a very classic, smart, clean polished vibe w/fun cheeky nick-names. I kind of like [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] for a fn, but wonder if it’s a little bit close to [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] anyway. I like the idea of [name_u]Maria[/name_u] [name_f]Annette[/name_f] (that’s my grandma’s name!) as a fn/mn combo for this little one. [name_u]Or[/name_u] also maybe you’d consider [name_f]Marinette[/name_f]? As a fn or mn. Maybe w/the nn [name_f]Mari[/name_f] or [name_f]Nettie[/name_f].

Here are my thoughts on your current list:

Cecilia-I like this. It’s smart & feminine w/out being frilly. It goes really well w/your kids’ names too. It’s simple enough but not terribly popular. I oddly hear [name_f]Cece[/name_f] a crazy amount in my area, but it doesn’t seem to be that used over all. I like the nn [name_f]Celie[/name_f] more.

Marianne-I like it, but again, too close to [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] anyway.

Charlotte-A pretty classic, but it’s just so over done that it’s kind of lost any spark for me.

Isabella-Yet this one I still adore, so go figure! Also way over done, but I love the romantic feeling it has. And [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], Ibbi or [name_f]Bella[/name_f] are great nns to go w/Lily & [name_u]Vinny[/name_u].

Sophie-I like it, but for some reason I’m way more into [name_f]Sofie[/name_f]. Which would just make things difficult, probably. It’s very popular anyway. Especially if you factor in all of the Sophias that have [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] as a nick name.

Marigold-Gorgeous! It’s super sweet w/beautiful floral imagery, old fashioned & still feels smart & polished. You could do something like [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] to honor the grandmas.

Iris-I don’t know why, but I don’t like this name. It’s a simple feminine polished flower name, so I should. But that just doesn’t have a pleasant sound in my opinion. Most people seem to like it.

Beatrix-[name_u]Love[/name_u] it! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite from your list. It’s my dog’s mn. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :dog:  It’s a great balance of feminine, spunky & vintage. It’s really easy & recognizable, but very not popular. And has great nns like [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_f]Bette[/name_f], [name_f]Bess[/name_f] & [name_f]Trixie[/name_f].

Eloise-Super sweet. Gives me similar vibes as [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. Kind of bookish but spunky at the same time. I like the nn [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]!

Thanks so much for all the replies everyone - I’m glad I headed here for some insight and inspiration!

My husband and I are running through all the suggestions as I type and “chewing” on each one, haha. Some suggestions are great but run into the usual obstacles (already taken by close family, bad associations, etc).

dandy_orchid, unfortunately [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f] falls into the “bad associations” category - a rather horrid roommate from yesteryear. What can you do? It is a nice name and a good suggestion, just not meant to be. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] are kind of a toss up at this point - such nice names. I do see your point on [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]/Lily being a little close. Would you go with a pronunciation of [name_f]Bea[/name_f] as “[name_f]Bee[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Bee[/name_f]-ah”?
[name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I both like [name_f]Edith[/name_f] but that was my aunt’s name and I wouldn’t use it just because I feel like I’d be “taking” it from her family if one of her grandchildren wanted to use it.

Thanks again everyone. I’ll try to post back with some final contenders as we mull it all over!

I agree that [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] seems perfect for use somewhere based on [name_u]Maria[/name_u] + [name_f]Annette[/name_f]. Would [name_u]Marian[/name_u](/n)a help? I know it’s not a big difference but sometimes minor changes can make a big difference. Then [name_f]Anna[/name_f] becomes the more intuitive nickname than [name_f]Annie[/name_f], although both are easy to use there.

I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] but with [name_f]Lily[/name_f] already I don’t think I would use another floral name.

Some more suggestions in the vein of long names with obvious nicknames - please consider any repeats to be votes in favour:

Eleanor came to mind first ([name_f]Elle[/name_f], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Norah[/name_f], [name_f]Lena[/name_f], [name_f]Leni[/name_f])
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] (my favourite nn for it is [name_f]Neve[/name_f], but there’s also [name_f]Gen[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], [name_f]Vivi[/name_f])
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (a million great nicknames!)
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] ([name_f]Poppy[/name_f] would be a nice option of a floral nickname next to [name_f]Lily[/name_f] but [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] itself isn’t floral - plus there’s [name_u]Penny[/name_u], [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]…)

Then, [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] doesn’t necessarily work with mn [name_f]Marianne[/name_f], but might the “[name_f]Mar[/name_f]-” serve to honour [name_u]Maria[/name_u] and then let you use [name_u]Anne[/name_u] or [name_f]Annette[/name_f] as the middle name? [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Anne[/name_u] or [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Annette[/name_f], with [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] or [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] or [name_f]Greta[/name_f] as the nickname?

Totally understandable about the associations! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite pronunciation of [name_f]Bea[/name_f] is “[name_f]Bee[/name_f]”, but they’re both very sweet!

Perhaps [name_f]Marlaina[/name_f] [name_f]Annette[/name_f] “[name_f]Marnie[/name_f]” or [name_f]Mariel[/name_f] [name_f]Annette[/name_f] “[name_u]Marley[/name_u]”

Cordelia immediately came to mind!

Eleanor
[name_f]Dahlia[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Callie[/name_f]
[name_f]Siena[/name_f]
[name_f]Carrie[/name_f]

Your more than welcome!

Naming is such a hard process my daughter was born on 3.2.21 and I found naming her really challenging so I completely understand why you are as well. But your other two children have wonderful names so you’ll definitely find an equally as wonderful name. [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is gorgeous I would try and work on hubby concerning this one. Also [name_f]Annie[/name_f] is sweet & I personally really like alliteration when it comes to naming (my daughter’s middle names are [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Ella[/name_f]) so I wouldn’t worry about that. [name_f]Elle[/name_f] can also definitely work as a middle name for [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] some of the suggestions potentially make the list/help narrow down your other choices. I’m definitely loving [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] for you!!

Good luck

Congratulations!!!
You already have some fabulously named kids. [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] are so precious. I agree that a name that feels vintage , longer with nickname possibilities is kind of what you are looking for.

Cecilia is beautiful and I think it has some great nickname options. [name_f]Cece[/name_f], , [name_f]Lia[/name_f],Silly, are pretty cute. I think it matches [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_m]Vin[/name_m]. [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] has an amazing flow

Marianne- I absolutely adore honour names and this name feels full of significance which I love for you. If [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] isn’t “working” for your partner how do they feel about [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f]? [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_u]Vinny[/name_u] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] / [name_f]Anna[/name_f] ? Other [name_u]Nick[/name_u] name possibilities [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_f]Aria[/name_f] , [name_f]Mare[/name_f], [name_f]Emma[/name_f]

Charlotte , [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] , [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] feel very popular. While they are beautiful and recognizable and classic I just know a lot of them !

Marigold is pretty but maybe on the more trendy side. It also really empowers a botanical theme for your girls. But I love the [name_u]Nick[/name_u] name [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] ! It also honours [name_u]Maria[/name_u]. So [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Annette[/name_f] , could work. [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_u]Vinny[/name_u] and [name_f]Goldie[/name_f]

Iris - also beautiful and botanical. It feels short next to [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_u]Vinny[/name_u]. [name_f]Iris[/name_f] could be a nickname for [name_f]Amaris[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] ( [name_f]Beatris[/name_f]) , Demaris , [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_f]Doris[/name_f]. And I like [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] as a combo

Beatrix- I adore [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] ! It has a lot of sentiment to me so I think this one shines a little brighter. I love the flow with [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_u]Vinny[/name_u] and [name_f]Bea[/name_f]. [name_f]Betty[/name_f] , [name_f]Bess[/name_f], [name_f]Trixie[/name_f], [name_f]Atti[/name_f] also work for nicknames. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] is pretty but I love [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f]

Eloise actually might be my favourites of the names you have here! [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Marianne[/name_f] feels so elegant! [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] has lots of cute nicknames too! [name_f]Lily[/name_f] [name_u]Vinny[/name_u] and [name_f]Lo[/name_f], [name_f]Lois[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] , [name_u]Lou[/name_u] , [name_f]Essie[/name_f]

Names I think feel long classic and beautiful with [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and [name_m]Vincent[/name_m]
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]( [name_f]Cat[/name_f], [name_f]Cathy[/name_f], [name_u]Ren[/name_u], [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Thea[/name_f], [name_f]Erin[/name_f])

Congratulations! Another idea is that instead of pushing the two “honour” names together you could use them separately for both the first and middle name. For example Miriam to honour Maria and Grace to honour Annette, so Miriam Grace, nickname Mim or Mimi? Or switch them around e.g. Grace Miriam, other options include Anna Miriam, Hannah Miriam etc.
