Sister for Matilda May

My daughter’s name is [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] and we often call her [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] or [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] for short. We chose the name [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] both because we loved the name and all the nickname possibilities (we [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] nicknames in our family). [name_f]May[/name_f] is a shortened version of my maiden name, and also the middle name of a grandma, so it has special meaning for us.

I’m pregnant with baby #2 and would like an opinion on a girl’s name (although we’re not sure what we’re having yet). I love the name [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and it is at the top of my list right now for many reasons: it’s lovely, it is a little bit retro like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and it also has many great nickname options. I especially love [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], with other possibilities being [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Midge[/name_f] or [name_f]Maggie[/name_f].

For a middle name, I was thinking [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] to honor grandmas on both sides named [name_f]Lois[/name_f], however I do feel that [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is a bit long (what with both being 3 syllables). I also like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], as [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is a family name on my Dad’s side. I really like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as a nickname, as we call our first [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] quite often.

So my questions are:

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] are too matchy???

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] or [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] better for a middle?

Thanks for your input!

I don’t [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] are too matchy, they only share the initial. Plus, [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is [name_f]LOVELY[/name_f]!!! I prefer [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].

They are too matchy for me personally but I think you could definitely use [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as a sister name to [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. My favorite from your sig would be Felicty, followed by [name_f]Lavender[/name_f]

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

undertherainbow - [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] are just so sweet and little bit sassy to me! I’m happy that you love them too!

yuma - I also love [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], but struggle with any good nicknames, which is important to me because willingly or not, I always shorten names! Any suggestions for those two?

I don’t think they are too matchy at all, and since you’re nickname people (like my family!) you will likely never really refer to them as the full, formal name. That being said, I think you could try [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f] in place of [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] to keep the “[name_f]Lois[/name_f]” honoring sound in there. With [name_f]Louise[/name_f] only being two syllables, it helps break up the length.
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u] is also a darling nickname to match [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f] Beautiful names and congratulations!!

dalolud - thank you for the suggestion! I don’t especially [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_f]Louise[/name_f], but it does break up the length nicely. And [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u] is just precious and something I could definitely see myself using!

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]- [name_f]Fifi[/name_f], [name_f]Fay[/name_f], Fliss, [name_u]Felice[/name_u]
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f]- Lav, Lavie, [name_u]Lou[/name_u], [name_f]Lula[/name_f]

[name_f]Lavender[/name_f] is a hard one for nn! [name_f]Dot[/name_f]/[name_f]Dottie[/name_f] works as a nn for all girls names (:

I don’t think [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] are too matchy. I think it’s a great choice and love the nickname [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]. I prefer [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]. I pronounce [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as two syllables anyway ([name_f]MAR[/name_f]-grit) so the flow works for me.

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] is beautiful! It’s not too long at all - that wouldn’t even enter my mind. I think they go together amazingly. I am assuming that you pronounce [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as “[name_f]MAR[/name_f]-gruht”/"[name_f]MAR[/name_f]-grit"? [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] & [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] works if you don’t mind two M names - personally that might be a little much for me, because I like lots of M names and they tend to be quite similar, but for those two, I think you should be fine.

@yuma has some good nn suggestons for [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]. I’d add [name_f]Flick[/name_f], Filly, [name_f]Lissa[/name_f]/Lissy, [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]/[name_f]Elissa[/name_f], and [name_f]Letty[/name_f] for [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], and [name_f]Addie[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_f]Lena[/name_f], Aven, [name_f]Avie[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], Lenya, [name_f]Enna[/name_f], and perhaps [name_f]Andi[/name_f] for [name_f]Lavender[/name_f]. Maybe [name_u]Raven[/name_u], if you like word names?

I don’t think they are too matchy, but I do think you should consider the possibility that if you have another child, would you feel odd giving them a non-M name? Personally, I think [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] are great sisters!

What about [name_f]Margot[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]?

sarah1800 and morning_glory - I guess I do kind of pronounce [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “[name_f]MAR[/name_f]-gruht” or “[name_f]MAR[/name_f]-grit” so in that case it does seem more like two syllables instead of three.

And I guess the two “M” names seems a little matchy to me, but because we call [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] “[name_f]Tilda[/name_f]” or “[name_f]Tillie[/name_f]” so often, I really almost think of her as a “T.” And while they are young, their names are often said together. But as they grown up, their name will only be their own and not part of a pair, ya know? I need to remind myself of that!

larkub101 - I think you are totally right! We are done after two, but if there was even a possibility that we might consider a third, I would probably stay away from an "M’ name for that exact reason. And while two “M” names for siblings are okay with me, three would just be [name_m]WAY[/name_m] too matchy for me!

aliciamae_ - I love [name_f]Margot[/name_f] too! I would totally consider using that as a first name (without a longer version). I guess I just like having a longer name to fall back on in case my daughter grows up and wants to use something a bit more formal, say in her profession life. While I love [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] for a little girl, I fear that a 30-year-old woman might want another option. But maybe not! But [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is still very classy, though I guess technically a nickname.

I think [name_f]Tillie[/name_f]/[name_f]Tilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is adorable! Perfection! I also think [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] works well as a middle name and not too long at all! I pronounce [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-ghrut, so just the two syllables as mentioned before.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] to add to the ideas of nicknames for [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]…there’s my favourite, [name_f]Effie[/name_f]!

[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are perfect!

wildmoonchild - you are making me love [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] even more! I never considered [name_f]Effie[/name_f] but I love that nickname!

I’m glad you like it! I think [name_u]Lou[/name_u] ages the name up a bit too so it can be for a young girl but still a family nickname as she grows up  It seems as though you are still very open to other suggestions! I saw that you like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], which is lovely, but be aware that it is climbing in popularity very quickly. I also don’t say [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] the same way as you (I say mar-ga-rette) so that makes my opinion slightly different from the others.

Yes, still very much undecided. My second favorite on a very short list is [name_f]Imogen[/name_f], nickname [name_f]Immy[/name_f] or Idgy (which is quirky, but I find cute). My concerns with [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] are that people might mispronounce it im-o-[name_u]GENE[/name_u] (eeek…not my fave!) and that my surname ends with -son and it might sounds rhyme-y. But I love [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I love your honest opinion of [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] and how you think it compares to [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]…?

Thanks!
