Sister for Sylvia

Hello,
We are expecting a girl this spring and are in the brainstorming phase for a name. Our daughter’s name is [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]. We like names that are classic, not hard to spell or pronounce (at least in the US), not too trendy or dramatic, and not in the top 50 or so. Also we don’t want anything that starts with P or S.
So far we have:
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_u]Marian[/name_u] or [name_u]Marion[/name_u] (which spelling?)
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Johanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] (possible too trendy)
[name_f]Alice[/name_f] (although I’m not sure my husband is sold on this one)

Possible problems with any of these? Are any of them poised to enter the top 20 in the next few years? More suggestions? Perfect middle names for any of these?
Thanks!

My favorite with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] is [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]. Followed by [name_f]Alice[/name_f].
I like [name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] a lot, but for some reason I don’t like them as much next to [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].

[name_f]Johanna[/name_f] I feel like people pronounce several different ways so if you really want straightforward pronunciation that might not be the way to go.

I prefer [name_u]Marian[/name_u] over [name_u]Marion[/name_u]

My top 3 choices are:

  1. [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

I love the rest of the names on your list as well.
As for [name_u]Marian[/name_u] I prefer the spelling: [name_f]Marianne[/name_f].

[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] or [name_f]Alice[/name_f] would go perfect with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].

Suggestions:
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f]
[name_u]Clare[/name_u]/[name_f]Clara[/name_f]

Totally agree with this. I like [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] a lot, but I don’t think it “fits” well with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. [name_u]Marian[/name_u] is much more feminine-looking than [name_u]Marion[/name_u]. I adore the name [name_f]Johanna[/name_f], but again, I agree that there are pronunciation issues.

I met a beautiful little [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] a few years ago who was about 7 years old. She had a younger, and equally beautiful, sister named [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]. I fell in love with this sibset. Such a gorgeous pairing.

Other ideas:
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Leona[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]

Of your choices [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] is my first choice by far.

[name_f]Jane[/name_f] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] are too plain to smoothly match [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] have a different style flow and [name_f]Johanna[/name_f] while pretty might run into pronunciation problems.

As far as [name_u]Marian[/name_u] vs. [name_u]Marion[/name_u] I’d go with [name_u]Marion[/name_u] so as not to run the risk of confusion with her being called [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] frequently.

But I think [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] works best with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] overall. [name_u]Marion[/name_u] would be my second choice.

My favorites with [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] are [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_u]Marian[/name_u](this spelling), and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]. [name_f]Johannah[/name_f] feels like a different style than [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]. [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] feel almost too straight forward next to [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] if that makes any since.

I like all your choices!

[name_m]Just[/name_m] came here to say… my husband’s grandmother was named [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] ("[name_f]Ruthie[/name_f]"), and her sister was [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], so I really like those two together. Lots of old, classic charm!

I admit I think [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and Miraim are my favorite sibset as well. Though I think it’s a tempting thought to add a [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] tree to the your family forest. ;). I also really like [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] together.

[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]

Would be my suggestion for you.

Good luck and congratulations!

With [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], I really, really love [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Johanna[/name_f] (I just love them in general, though!). [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] is lovely, btw.

If any will make it to the top 20 (I really doubt any will, though, honestly), I think it’d probably be [name_f]Alice[/name_f] or [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is nearly poised to join the top 100 in a couple years (it’s at 127 now), while [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is farther behind at 175. [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] has a more middle-aged feel to me, probably thanks to the only [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] I know, and I feel like in general, people aren’t quite AS drawn to it as other classic names like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], and even [name_f]Mary[/name_f], which seems to be gaining favor, as well.

I think [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and [name_f]Johanna[/name_f] would just be darling together, though–it’s perfect! And [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are so shimmery and sparkly together; they’re just divine. And I just love [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] in general.

I think [name_f]Johanna[/name_f] is my favorite, though!

Good luck!
