Sloane?

[name]Hi[/name] all! My husband and I decided on [name]Sloane[/name]. It was really hard to decide because the names I liked he didn’t and vice versa. He is more of a traditional person, but he liked [name]Sloane[/name] because it reminded him of [name]Ferris[/name] [name]Bueller[/name]'s [name]Day[/name] Off. We are both [name]Gen[/name] X’ers and we felt it was right and made sense. With that being said, I was researching and I know I shouldn’t care what others think, but there seems to be a lot of hate for this name. Mind you I think most of the people that don’t like it are a lot older than we are. What do you think? Please be honest but nice  LOL Thank you!!

[name]One[/name] of my all time favs! (reminds me of [name]Sloane[/name] Square in [name]London[/name]). I don’t have a girly girl name myself so [name]Sloane[/name] feels comfortable to us. Depending on the month, I waffle back and forth actually using it due to all the negative opinions too. Its the longest running resident of my name list though!

[name]Sloane[/name] can give that preppy/pretentious vibe. I like the sound of the name, and the fact that it’s shared by an athlete on the rise (tennis player [name]Sloane[/name] Stephens), but it’s got some baggage.

I’m one of those who strongly dislikes it, and I’m pretty young. To me it’s just a sound thing; I personally don’t find the sound of [name]Sloane[/name] pleasant at all. I feel like most of the hate, here on NB anyway, probably has more to do with the fact that it’s a last-name-as-first-name and isn’t particularly feminine.

I’m post-gen-x…and I personally don’t like it. Let me empathize “personally” - I don’t think there’s something inherently bad about the name or your daughter will be teased. I don’t like the sound, it’s a bit nasally to my ears. Nothing to do with it being a surname, I didn’t recognize it as one at first because it’s become such a popular first name.

There was a character on HBO’s Entourage with the name as well.

I agree with [name]Gwen[/name].

[name]Sloane[/name] can be thought of as pretentious as it was used in the 1980’s as a derogatory term for upper class [name]Sloane[/name] Rangers (Lady [name]Diana[/name] [name]Spencer[/name] was branded with this label), I don’t like it for its unisex trendiness nor for its sound. The name sounds a lot like what people do when they complain (groan, moan, drone etc…).

I love [name]Sloane[/name]! It is one of my favorites, but you’re right it does get a lot of hate on nameberry. Probably because the rather unisex nature of it doesn’t fit with the main style of the majority of posters.

I’m not much of a girly girl. I actually was a tomboy growing up. [name]Even[/name] though now I like girly things, I’m a geek by nature. I guess I wanted to find something that bucked the trend. We were considering [name]Ella[/name], but growing up with my common name for the decade (I was one of 4 in my class and it got irritating turning my head whenever someone said my name but wasn’t talking to me) I didn’t want our daughter to have a popular name, but something unique.

[name]Love[/name] the name [name]Sloane[/name], and love the connection to [name]Ferris[/name] [name]Bueller[/name]'s [name]Day[/name] Off (one of my all time faves!). Congrats on making a decision on the name and sticking with it, even though a lot of people might not like it!

I think it’s fine and definitely unusual, but not awful by any means. Definitely rings [name]Ferris[/name] [name]Bueller[/name] to me — but not nearly as much as the name [name]Ferris[/name]

[name]Every[/name] time I hear this name, I immediately think of Greys Anatomy. The name itself isn’t bad, just has too strong of an association for me.

It’s okay. though it’s a little hard to imagine a two-year-old [name]Sloane[/name].

I like it, although it does make me think of a pretentious girl, but I like it.

love, love love for a boy or girl. My daughter’s middle name is simone, and I find sloan and simone have the same sultry/jazz feeling to them
