What are everyone’s thoughts on [name_m]Smith[/name_m] for a first name? I’d say it definitely fits with my other boy names, I’m definitely a fan of surnames and also “cowboy”/“country” names. I would love to hear others’ thoughts. Also curious if anyone has any middle name suggestions? I’m not really sure what to pair with it, probably something a little more traditional.
Thoughts anyone?
I like it. It’s manly and pretty unique as a first name.
Many surnames are fine for first names. However, I’m not sure why anyone would choose THE most common English surname on the planet from all of the abundant choices. It’s bland, common and boring. Sorry but I’ve heard people with the last name [name_m]Smith[/name_m] curse it far too many times not to think otherwise. If it’s a family name, I would use it in the middle spot.
Makes me think of Sex and the City. I’m not a big fan. I don’t mind surnames as first names but [name_m]Smith[/name_m] is so common, and it’s basically the quintessential boring name.
I also feel like a boy named [name_m]Smith[/name_m] would have a lot of admin hassles - people assuming [name_m]Smith[/name_m] was his surname - although this might depend on how ambiguous your surname is.
Not a big fan. I agree completely with mischa. It’s kind of boring and bland and very common. Also if you have a common last name, [name_m]Smith[/name_m] won’t work with it.
I am one of the few that likes [name_m]Smith[/name_m]. I don’t like it enough to use it, but I’ve considered it. [name_m]Smith[/name_m] is my grandfather’s surname (and my grandmothers, obviously, haha), but my grandfather didn’t have an official name–just two initials (L.B.), so he went by [name_m]Smitty[/name_m] a lot of the time. I think [name_m]Smitty[/name_m] is adorable for a little boy, and [name_m]Smith[/name_m] is unexpected up front. Much like [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are much more unexpected as FNs than MNs. I wish I loved it, so I could use it, but I don’t love it enough to use it. Objectively, though, I’d be pretty happy to meet a [name_m]Smith[/name_m] or a [name_m]Smitty[/name_m].
Ditto all of this. The connection to Sex and the City (which makes me cringe) and the admin hassles were my first thoughts.
I agree with mischa.
I like [name_m]Smith[/name_m] too. I think in the first name spot the blandness of it melts away. I don’t think that he would have problems in school with teachers, etc thinking it’s a surname. We see way crazier things! Also, I don’t think the sex and the city connection ruins it. [name_m]Smith[/name_m] would make a cute little boy and a preppy and sophisticated man.
I also thought of Sex in the City. I think [name_m]Smith[/name_m] could work, but only if his last name was uncommon and unambiguous. [name_m]Smith[/name_m] Aarons would be a no-go, whereas [name_m]Smith[/name_m] Arstingall has the potential to work.
Thanks everyone for the opinions! I definitely understand all of the points that were made. Except I haven’t watched Sex and the City, so I have no idea what the connection is there. I will probably look into that. To me, yes [name_m]Smith[/name_m] is a rather boring last name, however as a first name I think it loses all of the “boringness” since it’s not commonly used as a first name. A lot of names that I like are surnames, most of them are just not common like [name_m]Smith[/name_m], so I guess that’s just my style.
I like it, and while I’ve seen Sex and the city episodes/movies, apparently they didn’t make much of an impression on me…I don’t tend to remember the characters’ names from things like that. I’ve known some really great people w/the surname [name_m]Smith[/name_m], and odds are good it’s a surname from somewhere in your ancestry if you could expand it enough to find it. I think it’s a fine first name.
I think first of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Poppins:
“I knew this chap with a wooden leg named [name_m]Smith[/name_m].”
“Oh? What was the name of his other leg?”
