Are there any names in my signature that you would consider snobby (or posh)?
a.) do you like them anyway or maybe because of that?
b.) what would you think that child’s parents are like?
And in general:
2. What other names do you think of as snobby…
3. …but would use?
4. …and wouldn’t ever use?
No, I think the names in your signature are lovely!
When I think “snobby” names I think of the names they give stereotypical-WASP-y characters in tv shows. Men named “[name_m]Prescott[/name_m]”, for example.
They’re definitely not snobby. Some of them seem regal, but not snobby (and there’s nothing wrong with regal). The names I consider regal in your signature are [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_m]Kasimir[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_f]Ida[/name_f] and Barthélémy. They sound like the names of the royal family, so a strong British feel… I guess to some these may come across snobby, but they sound fine to me! [name_m]Just[/name_m] royal, and there is nothing wrong with names of a rich feel.
Not quite. [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] are almost snobby (although snobby isn’t quite the right word for it…maybe ‘indoorsy’ instead?), but they sound fine in your combos because you’ve paired them with names that balance out well. Barthélémy also comes across as slightly snobby unless you’re [name_m]French[/name_m].
a.) I like [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] anyway. The others are NMS, but really anything can be de-snob-ified with a nickname ([name_m]Ed[/name_m] and [name_u]Penny[/name_u]? Not snobby at all.)
b.) [name_m]Edmund[/name_m]: Probably academics who read lots of classic lit.
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]: They must have wanted a full name for [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]. Or they’re just into vintage, straight-laced, aristocratic names.
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]: They’re right on trend, but in a pleasant enough way. I just hope they weren’t copying the Kardashians.
Barthélémy: They’re either [name_m]French[/name_m] (or Belgian or Swiss or whatever) or they’re Francophiles.
And in general:
2. Like pp, anything aggressively WASP-y (ie would be found at a garden party in the Hamptons) or trying too hard to be avant-garde (anything from the Pinterest ‘My Imaginary Well-Dressed Toddler Daughter.’) Also: [name_m]Alistair,[/name_m] [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m], [name_f]Iphigenia[/name_f], [name_f]Letitia[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Sophronia[/name_f], [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f]
3. Ones I have some version of on my list are bolded.
4. …but really, I wouldn’t let perceived snobbiness put me off any name entirely. The right MN/FN or nickname can make anything instantly un-snobby; think [name_f]Amy[/name_f] [name_f]Zenobia[/name_f], [name_m]Alastair[/name_m] [name_u]Nico[/name_u], [name_u]Gus[/name_u], [name_f]Lettie[/name_f], etc.
I definitely don’t think your names are ‘snobby’, but I imagine the non-nameberry world might view some as a little pretentious or regal as someone else said.
I wouldn’t worry about it all, most of my favourites are perceived as very ‘old lady’ which is not a good thing according to my husband!
There are names that I don’t consider snobby, but they probably are, I like them anyway. It’s hard to tell if I’m snobby or not, but I often find myself having snobby opinion.
I’m attracted to snobby names, but if some names are too much, I will pass. I like [name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f], and it’s genuine name on my list, but I wouldn’t use [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m], which I like.
I don’t think your names are snobby. Maybe some would say they were a bit over the top in the non-nameberry world, but not snobby. Snobby for me is pretentious, hipster, NYC names like [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] (mentioned above), [name_m]Tripp[/name_m], [name_m]Brooks[/name_m], [name_m]Byron[/name_m], [name_m]Leopold[/name_m]. Mostly because they feel like one is trying too hard [name_f]IMO[/name_f].
I was a nanny for a very wealthy family for seven years. I met a lot of nice people and a lot of ‘snobs.’ None of the latter had any of the names in your list except [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], and she was older. Therefore, no to your question. To me, snobby names include [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_m]Christian[/name_m], [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_f]Rachel[/name_f], [name_m]Jacob[/name_m], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. Those names were everywhere!
Your taste is quite…‘posh’, I guess is the word to use. But I wouldn’t call them snobby.
I do like [name_f]Flora[/name_f] and especially [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]. [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] is one I really like but dont like at the same time. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is a nice name but not my taste. [name_u]Theo[/name_u] is nice too, but becoming popular. I love [name_f]Alice[/name_f], its a classic and [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] has the wonderful [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] as a nickname. [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is one I like but wouldn’t dream of using.
[name_m]Kasimir[/name_m] is a name I have never heard of and [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] just makes me think of an old man.
Barthélémy is the worst, I have no idea how to say it, I guess that one does look over the top posh.
I do think ‘[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]’ is quite snobby though. Sorry.
Snobby names in my opinion are; [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f], [name_f]Esther[/name_f], [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u], [name_f]Serena[/name_f], [name_f]Brianna[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
No problem, I do like to hear what other think about the names I like, positive and negative. Barthélémy, can be pronounced as [name_u]Bar[/name_u]-thell-le-mee or [name_u]Bar[/name_u]-TEH-leh-mee, depending on the language. I do think it’s a name that would probably create problems in the first name spot, though.
I’d be interesting in who you think [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]'s parents would be as that’s the one you view as snobby (genuine interest here) or generally know what makes the name snobby.
And thank you everyone for commenting, what you wrote and which names you do perceive as “snobby” is quite interesting since many of them are rather “normal”.
I don’t think any of the names you have in your signature is particularly snobby on it’s own. The ones I would say come closest to snobby are Barthélémy and [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], although they’re still lovely names.
That said, I am of the opinion that multiple middle names is a bit “snobby” or pretentious sounding. Does that mean it’s bad and no one should do it? Of course not. To each his own.
I can’t think of any names I would describe as “snobby” - but there are some names I would describe as “aristocratic” or “scholarly” e.g. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_f]Prudence[/name_f], [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], while there’s a quite different category I would describe as “pretentious” - and top of my list here would be double-barrelled names. I realise in some cultures these are quite normal, but in my culture they just seem over the top. So [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] would be in this category.
