Snow as a first name

[name]Hi[/name], this is my first post

My husband and I are pregnant with our third child and if it is a girl we are considering using the first name [name]Snow[/name]. We [name]LOVE[/name] the name. We love how it sounds, how it looks written down and that it is so unique, charming and mysterious. (Yes, we’re fans of Once Upon A Time!)
We’re actually not worried about her getting teased for the name when she’s growing up as she’ll be surrounded by hunters, violets and other word / nature / unusual names. There are brothers at my children’s daycare called Wenlock and [name]Pascoe[/name]. We believe [name]Snow[/name] will fit right in.

Also she is guaranteed to have fair skin and big blue eyes. I have fair hair, my husband has black curls, and our other two children are strawberry blonde. So we believe the name will suit her appearance, however she turns out.

But I am terrified of the reaction we will get from our generation and our parents’ generation. I worry that her grandparents will be too embarrassed to call her [name]Snow[/name] in public. So I’d like to hear some honest opinions on the name. If I can’t handle the criticism on here I’ll know I won’t be able to handle it in real life. I’d love to use the name I’m just not sure I’m brave enough.

Our other children are [name]Keagan[/name] [name]James[/name] (“fire”) and [name]Clara[/name] [name]Willow[/name] (“clear/bright”)
We are looking at the middle name [name]Lucina[/name] (“light”) after the goddess of light and childbirth who brings children into the light. So her name would be [name]Snow[/name] [name]Lucina[/name] [name]Kavanagh[/name]. Also [name]Lucina[/name] provides the alternative [name]Lucy[/name] / [name]Luce[/name] if she grows up to dislike [name]Snow[/name]. [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Lucy[/name] but I cannot use a popular name.

Sorry this is so long  If you’re still reading, thank you!

Other suggestions are welcome, particularly names meaning “light” “sun” or similar. I’m not interested in alternative names that mean [name]Snow[/name] and I don’t really dig unusual names that are hard to pronounce and spell.

Hmm. I like the same things about [name]Snow[/name] that you do- associations, sound and look : D. But I don’t like the teasing potential - with snowballs having some sexual teasing potential as a word, snow being slang for cocaine too. It also just feels kind of abrupt. It also feels very oddball out with [name]Keagan[/name] and [name]Clara[/name]. If her siblings were [name]Pascoe[/name] and [name]Willow[/name] she’d fit in better.

So I hope that helps you as you consider. I definitely think it’s a name that’s worth using if you love it enough, but those are the drawbacks I see. I think [name]Lucina[/name] is BEAUTIFUL and [name]Lucina[/name] [name]Snow[/name] would fit in very nicely with [name]Keagan[/name] [name]James[/name] and [name]Clara[/name] [name]Willow[/name]. She wouldn’t have to go by [name]Lucy[/name] if it’s too common, just full on [name]Lucina[/name] or Cina would work, or [name]Lulu[/name].

Two other sun and light names that occur to me.

[name]Solina[/name] (element “sol” for sun, and it’s the Finnish word for the light twinkling/babbling sound made by a stream!) Plus I think you could nn her [name]Snow[/name] by a stretch. I like [name]Keagan[/name], [name]Clara[/name], and [name]Solina[/name]. [name]Solina[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]?

[name]Elena[/name]/[name]Helena[/name] - these are very nicely matched to [name]Clara[/name] too

I like it, but I think it’s a bit cutesy, but I totally would love it if I met a [name]Snow[/name].

Try testing it out yourself. Go to starbucks and give them [name]Snow[/name] as your name, or go to another order place where people take your name. Practice yelling it off your back porch, or yard. Or ask your parents, closest friend etc.

I happen to really like [name]Snow[/name] as a name. I also love [name]Winter[/name]. I’d add them to my list except I live in Alaska and it’s almost too obvious. I’m not entirely certain I like it with the name [name]Clara[/name], if that matters to you. Does [name]Clara[/name] go by her FN or MN? [name]Clara[/name] is a pretty name, but it just seems so safe and quiet in comparison to [name]Snow[/name], and I worry she might be jealous of her sister’s more daring name. When they get into fairy tales, I’m sure she’s going to love having a fairy tale princess that has her name, and [name]Clara[/name] won’t have that. It might not even matter, but it’s something to think about.

Redwood fey, you mustn’t forget about princess [name]Clara[/name] from “drawn together”! haha!

Thanks for the feedback, it is all very helpful.
I have always loved [name]Elaina[/name] but have had some trouble getting my husband to like it.
Naming a girl is such a big responsibility! It’s hard to find something “perfect”.

I think [name]Snow[/name] is gorgeous, I kinda agree with redwoodfey, it doesn’t have the same feeling as your other two kids names. Then again I’m not that big on having your sibset ‘match’ and as for [name]Clara[/name] her name reminds me of the Nutcracker which makes me think of [name]Christmas[/name] which makes me think of [name]Snow[/name], so it kind of matches in a round about way

I like [name]Snow[/name] a lot. The only negative were it on MY list, just for argument’s sake, is that it feels diminutive – like it should be a nickname for something.

I agree [name]Snow[/name] can feel a little unfinished. Although I haven’t been able to think of an extended version that I like. [name]Feel[/name] free to make suggestions
I do love how short and sweet [name]Snow[/name] looks particularly next to [name]Clara[/name]. I think visually the two pair well, even though they are a very different style. [name]Keagan[/name] doesn’t pair at all though! I struggle to find any boys names I like at all.

Hah! I’ve never heard of Drawn Together, but I just googled it and it sounds hilarious. I’d forgotten about [name]Clara[/name] from the Nutcracker, so if you end up using [name]Snow[/name] and the issue does ever come up (it probably wouldn’t I tend to over think things) you could take them to see the Nutcracker. Again, I think [name]Snow[/name] is a beautiful name.

I skipped reading others’ comments to give you my uninfluenced opinion…

[name]Snow[/name] [name]Luciana[/name] [name]Kavanagh[/name]…I like it

It’s fresh, bright, cool, but cozy. Possible nickname is ‘Noey/Noie’, which is adorable.

You and your husband [name]LOVE[/name] it? Why search further? There’s your answer

(if you still doubt it, do what another [name]Berry[/name] just suggested on another thread: use [name]Snow[/name] to place an order at Starbucks and see how people react when they call it up)

I really like [name]Snow[/name]. I think it’s a name that could work. The only idea I can think of to extend [name]Snow[/name] would be to add hyphened name.
Example: [name]Snow[/name]-[name]Belle[/name].

Why not flip the names around, and name her [name]Lucina[/name] [name]Snow[/name]? [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Lucina[/name] sound much more like sisters than [name]Clara[/name] and [name]Snow[/name]. I know you said you didn’t want a “popular” name, but you wouldn’t have to call her [name]Lucy[/name], although it’s a wonderful classic; there’s [name]Lu[/name], [name]Lulu[/name], Cina, Cici, etc. If the idea of a negative reaction from your generation and your parents to [name]Snow[/name] fills you with terror I just don’t think you should use it in the first name slot - a feeling of unease isn’t a good sign. A bold name like [name]Snow[/name] would be perfect in the middle spot.

Also, if you don’t like [name]Lucina[/name] as a first name [name]Helena[/name] (light, torch, bright) or [name]Helen[/name] would go wonderfully with [name]Clara[/name].

I agree with this. I would go with [name]Lucina[/name] [name]Snow[/name] instead, with [name]Snow[/name] as a nickname. That way you have a less out there name up front (which your daughter might appreciate down the road) but still have the option of calling your daughter [name]Snow[/name].

I think [name]Snow[/name] is a crisp, fresh and beautiful name. I’ve always imagined it as a wonderful middle name, but I see no reason why it couldn’t work as a first name. [name]Snowdrop[/name] is the birth flower for [name]January[/name], so depending on your due date that could be a longer option?

Thank you all so much for your opinions. The response to using [name]Snow[/name] as a first name has been much more positive than I expected. Not a single “I hate it” (yet!)
I’m definitely feeling less worried about others’ response to the name, although I will try the great suggestion of ordering a coffee / takeaway under the name [name]Snow[/name]. It will give me a chance to gauge their reaction as well as find out how comfortable I would really be if [name]Snow[/name] was my name.
I’m extraordinarily fussy and have a lot of trouble finding anything else I love for the first spot. Thank you all for the suggestions, I always enjoy trying on a new name for a while.

Althou sweet, I too think it would be a sharp departure from [name]Keagan[/name] and [name]Clara[/name]. And does it ever snow anywhere in Queensland?

You had asked earlier for suggestions involving light or the sun:

Alaula (Hawaiian for ‘the light at dawn, or sunset glow’)
[name]Alina[/name] (“light”, a Slavic version of [name]Helen[/name])
Annot (‘light’)
Aonani(Hawaiian for “beautiful light”)
[name]Chiara[/name] (Italian for light- close to [name]Clara[/name])
[name]Eliora[/name] (‘God is my light’)
[name]Keren[/name] (‘ray of light’)
[name]Lana[/name] (sultry version of [name]Helen[/name])
[name]Liora[/name] (‘gift of light to me’)
Mahina (Hawaiian for moonlight)
[name]Nahara[/name] (light in Aramaic)
[name]Noor[/name] /[name]Nora[/name] (light in Arabic)
[name]Orly[/name]/ Lior (‘my light’)
[name]Phoebe[/name] (‘radiant,’ a reference to [name]Apollo[/name], the god of light)
[name]Saskia[/name] (‘valley of light’)
[name]Clytie[/name] (a nymph in Greek mythology who was in love with the sun, and was turned into a sunflower)
[name]Elidi[/name] (‘gift of the sun’)
[name]Idalia[/name] (‘behold the sun!’ In Greek)
[name]Siria[/name] (‘sun-bright, glowing’)
[name]Sol[/name] / [name]Soleil[/name]: the sun

I prefer [name]Lucina[/name] [name]Snow[/name] tbh.

I love [name]Snow[/name]! [name]Snow[/name] is my favourite thing in the whole world, and it makes a gorgeous name. It’s nice with [name]Lucina[/name] as a middle, but I love blade’s suggestion of [name]Liora[/name]. [name]Liora[/name] [name]Snow[/name] would be perfection.

Please don’t look for another name and choose [name]Snow[/name]! I might sound a bit selfish but I absolutely love the name haha! I’ve had did tucked away in my mind for years now, it’s soft and sweet but just undoubfully has a bit of strength to it. And [name]Snow[/name] [name]Lucina[/name] [name]Kavanagh[/name] is just drop dead gorgeous.
