Snow as a First Name

I’ve really been loving the name [name_f]Snow[/name_f] lately as a first name for a girl. A couple questions though.

  1. Though I love the sound of the name itself, I also feel it has personal significance for me. I’m Canadian and I live for the winter and the weather that comes with it. If I see that it’s snowing it brings a smile to my face, my day is instantly brightened, and it I feel that nothing could go wrong. It’s comforting and special to me. Now if I said this to you (or even when you’re reading it) would you roll your eyes? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think naming your child after weather/nature is not a good enough reason to merit personal significance? (Please be 100% honest and don’t worry about hurting my feelings.) I’ve been thinking more about my personal ties to the name since coco1010 made the thread about [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and how it was was special to her, which I just adored the concept of.

  2. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you find it weird? Names like [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Summer[/name_f], [name_u]Sunny[/name_u], and [name_u]Rain[/name_u] are all ordinarily considered acceptable, but is there something about [name_f]Snow[/name_f] that you think does just not work as a name in real life? (*edit: Sorry, I should add if you do find it weird, what is the reason you find it strange, but similar weather/nature names fair game.)

  3. Is it too tied to [name_f]Snow[/name_f] White? I know names like [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] and [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] seem to be doing okay for themselves, but does [name_f]Snow[/name_f] seem too disney-esque to work to you?

  4. Regardless of if you would use it for yourself, how would you feel if someone else you knew used this name. What would be your initial reaction, and is it something that you could maybe grow to like?

Thanks so much to everyone!

  1. Yes I’d - inwardly - roll my eyes.

  2. Yes I find it weird.

  3. Not Disneyfied, but everyone knows the fairytale of [name_f]Snow[/name_f] White. So yes, very tied to the fairy tale.

  4. I’d sigh and roll my eyes and I doubt I’d be happy every time I had to say/write it.

Personally, I don’t like it as a first name. I don’t like [name_u]Rainy[/name_u]/[name_f]Stormy[/name_f]/Breezy/[name_u]Sunny[/name_u] etc either. I find them odd and childish and I wouldn’t want to be named [name_u]Rainy[/name_u] or [name_u]Sunny[/name_u]. [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f] nn [name_u]Sunny[/name_u], sure, but not just [name_u]Sunny[/name_u].

Now, I love [name_f]Snow[/name_f] as a middle because I think just about anything can happen in the middle. I think it’s very sweet the connection you have to it, but I would give her s name she can move through life with in the first place and use your [name_f]Snow[/name_f] in the middle.

Or, and personally this is the way I prefer to go, use a name that means [name_f]Snow[/name_f] and use [name_f]Snow[/name_f] as a nn. I find that more personal and sweet while still keeping [name_f]Snow[/name_f] there for you. And when someone asks, you just say “Oh, her name means snow and it has a deep personal significance to us.” Here’s some of those, in case you like the idea:

[name_f]Eira[/name_f] – snow
Eirlys – snow fall
Eirwen – blessed snow
Gweneira – snow white
[name_f]Neva[/name_f] – snow
[name_f]Neve[/name_f]/[name_f]Niamh[/name_f] – snow
Setsuna – calm snow
Lumi – snow in Finnish according to Behind the Name

1 Firstly, I’m Canadian too. Unfortunately, I have a different reaction when I see snow. Swear words may be part of my vocabulary depending on the amount. It spoils the commute to work and messes up your hair, it disrupts long made plans, it wrecks havoc on your body as you shovel the crap off the driveway and sidewalks for the tenth day in row…I think you get the picture!

2 [name_f]Snow[/name_f] is a word that works better as a quirky middle name.

3 A girl would most probably get the extra word of “white” attached to her name.

4 My initial reaction would be something like…why the hell would anyone call their child [name_f]Snow[/name_f]? Did the parents have too many snowboarding and/or skiing accidents to think clearly? Are the parents “closet hippies” who plan to name any future children Sleet and Slush?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] say NO to [name_f]SNOW[/name_f] as a first name and put it in the middle spot, eh?

@dantea Yes I would definitely consider putting it in the middle spot instead. I also like the idea of using a name that means snow. My favourites from your list are Eira, Neve, and specifically Eirwen as it’s fairly similar to Arwen, another one of my favourites that I think is a tad too Lord of the Rings for me to use. Thank you so much for the suggestions!

@mischa I thought of that too but forgot to mention it. Being in a country that it does snow, it might not be so fun to constantly hear people say ‘I hate snow!’ when talking about the weather.

I actually really like the name [name_f]Snow[/name_f], but prefer it in the middle. However, I think that’s mostly because I shy away from one-syllable first names. If [name_u]Rain[/name_u] has come to be an acceptable first name, why not snow? I don’t think any reason of personal significance for choosing a name is superior to another, so I don’t know why naming your child after a type of precipitation (that has meaning to you) is more eye-roll-worthy than naming them after a flower, a place, a season, or even a Great Aunt.

No, I don’t find it any weirder than any other nature/word names.

[name_f]Snow[/name_f] White is not one of the first things I think of when I hear the name, so no.

I would love if someone I knew named their daughter _____ [name_f]Snow[/name_f]! I do think it’s fine as a first name also, just not as much my style.

  1. I say if you love the sound of the name and it has such a special meaning to you…go for it. I definately would not roll my eyes about the name [name_f]Snow[/name_f]. I truly like word names and nature names. I also really like your concept ( I see the name [name_f]Snow[/name_f] bringing a smile to peoples faces) and it will show your child that you put a lot of thought into naming her.

  2. I don’t find it weird at all! Nature names are becoming the thing to do. I personally love [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Summer[/name_f], [name_u]Sunny[/name_u], [name_u]Rain[/name_u] and I have a cousin that named her daughter [name_f]Meadow[/name_f]. I think it’s adorable.

  3. I wouldn’t associate it with [name_f]Snow[/name_f] White at first thought. I would associate it with beauty and brightness.

  4. I would think “Why didn’t I think of that first?” I really like it!

I think it’s one of those enchanting magic middle name options. I love [name_f]Snow[/name_f], the name, character and the white stuff. Like [name_u]Wren[/name_u] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f], it makes any name sound amazing. I wouldn’t think it was the worst first name I ever heard if I met a [name_f]Snow[/name_f], but I’d probably ask her if she gets called [name_f]Snow[/name_f] White all the time. And she’d probably say yes. I think [name_u]Winter[/name_u] is a little more wearable as a first name.
