I see that if used for a girl you say you would be pronouncing the name like (soul). I would personally also instinctively pronounce it this way if I planned to use it for a boy as well, would you consider doing the same?
I think people would have a much harder time with possibly confusing the names with each other if [name_u]Sol[/name_u] was (soul) and [name_m]Saul[/name_m] was (sahl).
[name_f]My[/name_f] initial thought was that in the US the names are pronounced the same so I was leaning into that. [name_u]Famous[/name_u] Sols in the US like [name_u]Sol[/name_u] [name_f]Bloom[/name_f] and [name_u]Sol[/name_u] Brodsky pronounced their names like [name_m]Saul[/name_m] (in the US accent). There’s a character called [name_u]Sol[/name_u] on the show [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] whose name I assumed was [name_m]Saul[/name_m] until I looked it up (maybe that should’ve been all the omen I needed). I was thinking I’d go with the most common pronunciation, but it seems like the name is out of use enough that the intuitive pronunciation has changed. I like the “soul” pronunciation and that would be the primary pronunciation used here in Honduras in our Spanish-speaking communities either way, but I might lean slightly toward using it for a girl if I was firmly set on “soul” in [name_f]English[/name_f] as well.
I’d definitely go with [name_u]Sol[/name_u].
In [name_u]England[/name_u] [name_u]Sol[/name_u], [name_m]Saul[/name_m] and [name_u]Soul[/name_u] would all be pronounced differently.
Really like them both, actually! If you prefer the pronunciation that rhymes with [name_m]Paul[/name_m], I’d go with [name_m]Saul[/name_m], as [name_u]Sol[/name_u] could also be pronounced more like the first part of “solar”.
I also like the sun/peace meanings that you mentioned!
