So, I discovered this name recently and I love it! It’s now on the top of my girl’s list! Solby ([name]SOL[/name]-bee) is just entirely too cute. What do you berries think? [name]Love[/name] it or not?
I really don’t like it. All I can hear SoBe like the water brand
It feels made up to me. If you like it, why not consider [name]Colby[/name]?
Edited for privacy.
I think it sounds a tad bit masculine! What about [name]Shelby[/name] or [name]Selby[/name]?
It looks like I’m the voice of dissent so far, but I love it. This may sound weird, but I’m always looking for less common alternatives to [name]Sophie[/name] - [name]Sylvie[/name], [name]Saffron[/name] “Saffy”, [name]Persephone[/name] “Sephy”, [name]Posey[/name], [name]Josephine[/name] “Sephy” / “[name]Posy[/name]”, [name]Sosie[/name], Sose, and Solby definitely fits in in that regard. I also really like [name]Selby[/name], but I think that based on sound I like Solby even more.
I also like that it could be unexpectedly multicultural - there’s a female Korean celebrity named Solbi. Also, when I searched for the name Solby on Google it gave me a Korean woman who volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, and on her web site it says that the name means “lotus tree” in Korean.
It’s here: http://www.habitateb.org/solby-yoon
Actually, the more I think about Solby the more I love it. Where did you discover it, may I ask?
I’m with you! I love it it was actually the name of some chick’s friend (who was also a girl) on [name]True[/name] Life. She was very blonde and skinny, did not look Korean lol I had never heard of the name before then or after! That’s interesting that you found that though! It clarifies the meaning and stuff that I was in the dark about.
It was probably a case of a surname as a first name on the blonde girl. Solby isn’t in the Surname DB, but it seems like it probably means something like “muddy farm” or “muddy homestead.” Not quite as lyrical as “lotus tree”, but I still like the name!
I got the “muddy” part from this article:
And the “by” meaning farm/homestead can pretty much be found in an article for any surname ending in -by.
Sorry for geeking out over here! I guess I’m just excited by Solby’s newness and unfamiliarity to me.
Yeah, I think I prefer “lotus tree” do you like it enough to use it? Obviously there are girls out there with this name so I’m not exactly questioning the useability anymore! Lol
My knee-jerk reaction to it is that I don’t like it. I live near a grocery chain named Sobey’s.
BUT that being said growing up I always admired unusual names and I think if I knew someone with that name I’d like it. If you use it just make sure to give her a classic middle name to go with it. I also like how it sounds very strong.
There are definitely no kids in my immediate future, but I could certainly see myself eventually using Solby. I love both Sose and [name]Phoebe[/name] and they’re already names that I’ve imagined someday using, and Solby is similar enough in sound to them. I like the idea of Solby with [name]Bee[/name] as a nickname.
In terms of usability, I guess it isn’t “name nerd” friendly the way that something like [name]Clara[/name] or [name]Arthur[/name] might be, but I certainly think that it’s usable in the real world.
