Some questions about Molly! 🌼

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone! [name_f]My[/name_f] apologies for all the recent posts. I have been thinking quite a bit about [name_f]Molly[/name_f] recently and I have a few questions. Please give me honest feedback, you will not offend me!

Some background:

I love the name [name_f]Molly[/name_f], and the idea of using it to honor my mom and late material grandma. I think it is both beautiful and sweet as a stand-alone name. I would definitely be open to using it that way. However, I think there is also something about [name_f]Molly[/name_f] when used as the first part of a double name that makes it extra special! I haven’t decided whether or not I would like to hyphenate it as a double name, as I think there are benefits and drawbacks to both. A hyphen helps people to intuitively know that a girl or woman goes by two names. I also know there are ways for that to be made clear without the use of a hyphen.

Some combinations I love using [name_f]Molly[/name_f]:

[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f] (this one is my favorite, but I know it’s not everyone’s style.)
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Corinne[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f]

Ways I’ve thought of writing the name if I do decide to make it a double name rather than first and middle(s). I’ll use my first choice since it seems like the easiest name to illustrate my thoughts on this:

[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]
Molly-Kate
MollyKate
Mollykate

Questions:

  1. What are your thoughts on [name_f]Molly[/name_f]? Is it strong enough to stand alone, or would making it a double name make it more interesting?
  2. I’ve asked this question about this name before, but I wanted to return to it. I know someone named M@rikate. She is about a year and a half older than I am. Our families are close, but we don’t see each other often. I haven’t seen M@rikate in several years, and don’t think using a similar name would bother her or her parents. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it’s weird to use a similar name in this situation? Are they too close?
  3. How would you intuitively write this type of double name? Right now, I’m somewhere between 1 and 2.
  4. Other suggestions of names that work well with [name_f]Molly[/name_f] for the second half of the double name or as a middle?

Any feedback you can offer is greatly appreciated! Please be as honest as possible.

Thank you so much!

  1. [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is too plain/common for me personally but objectively I think it is a solid name choice that has stood the test of time. It really depends on what you double it with
  2. I think it might be a tad weird but you could just ask and see what they say unless you’re wanting to keep the name a secret.
  3. Probably with the hyphen so it stands out that the entire thing is a first name. If you’re not from the [name_u]South[/name_u], it might get shortened to just one name though. (sorry, I don’t remember from your other posts).

As a middle:

[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] (my personal favorite for this list)
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Helene[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Dawn[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Mariska[/name_f]
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]

for the second half:

Molly-Grace [name_f]Ann[/name_f] ____
Molly-Ann [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] ____
Molly-Ann [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] _____
Molly-Grace Wren_____
Molly-Cara [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] ______
Molly-Jayne [name_u]Willow[/name_u] ______ (probably my favorite of this list) *If this is too close to “Mary Jane” for you, you could invert and do “Molly-Willow Jayne.”
Molly-Fern [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] ____
Molly-Hope Mabel______
Molly-Faith [name_f]Elena[/name_f] _______

With [name_f]Kate[/name_f]:

Molly-Kate [name_u]Laurel[/name_u]
Molly-Kate [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f]
Molly-Kate [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f]
Molly-Kate [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
Molly-Kate [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
Molly-Kate [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] (probably my favorite of this list)
Molly-Kate [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]
Molly-Kate [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]

Hopefully these help!

I love [name_f]Molly[/name_f] as a name it’s bright & classic. I don’t think you NEED to add anything to make it more interesting. It’s quite close to MaryKate but I wouldn’t think about if if you don’t see each other often.

I would spell it like [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] too and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Beth[/name_f] or [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f].

What are your thoughts on Molly? Is it strong enough to stand alone, or would making it a double name make it more interesting?

[name_f]Molly[/name_f] is warm and cuddly, but sassy and determined too – plenty strong enough and substantial for me. I do think a double name would be fun, but only if you actually like one.

. Do you think it’s weird to use a similar name in this situation? Are they too close?

In this situation, I think it’s fine – M@ri is very different to [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and it’s also a family honour name, so I’d say you’re good. Plus, you haven’t seen them in a while.

How would you intuitively write this type of double name? Right now, I’m somewhere between 1 and 2.

I’d write it as Molly-Kate – it shows she’s got two names that are used together, and I just like the hyphen personally

Other suggestions of names that work well with Molly for the second half of the double name or as a middle?

[name_f]My[/name_f] good friend is named [name_f]Molly[/name_f] - specifically Molly-Anne!

1. What are your thoughts on Molly? Is it strong enough to stand alone, or would making it a double name make it more interesting?
The name itself definitley doesn’t need another name. I love [name_f]Molly[/name_f] - so bright and sweet but also grown-up!

2. I’ve asked this question about this name before, but I wanted to return to it. I know someone named M@rikate. She is about a year and a half older than I am. Our families are close, but we don’t see each other often. I haven’t seen M@rikate in several years, and don’t think using a similar name would bother her or her parents. Most certainly not! Don’t worry about it!

3. How would you intuitively write this type of double name? Right now, I’m somewhere between 1 and 2.
Molly-Kate, with a hyphen because that’s how the Molly-Anne I know spells it.

4. Other suggestions of names that work well with Molly for the second half of the double name or as a middle?
[name_f]Molly[/name_f] is such a good name that so many other names can accompany it and still look good! Some of my faves…
Molly-Anne
Molly-Pearl
Molly-May (my favourite!)
Molly-Beth

  1. I go by [name_f]Molly[/name_f] online and with a few friends and I’ve never had any issues with it! [name_f]My[/name_f] friends have only ever complimented it. Plus, it’s such a familiar name and quite popular in countries like the UK, so of course it’s strong enough to stand by itself!
  2. I think it’s fine, the two names are similar but not so much that it looks intentional, especially if you don’t spell it like Mollykate (which might be a bit more strange, since that’s an unusual way to spell a double name).
  3. Personally, I think it looks a lot neater when it’s a first name - middle name situation. First name [name_f]Molly[/name_f], middle name [name_f]Kate[/name_f], for example. I know 3 people who go by a double name and they all spell it like that. They’ve never had any problems with getting called by both names. And then you don’t have to deal with the issues that come with using a hyphen, or 2 capitalized letters within a name (it doesn’t look that nice to me & I also know that some computer systems for example don’t accept names with characters like that).
  4. I don’t have any suggestions at the moment, but I really like [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] from your list! :yellow_heart:

@cms1512 Thank you so much, this is so helpful! I’m not from the [name_u]South[/name_u], so I was thinking the hyphen would be helpful. At this point in time, (probably because I am nowhere close to having a child, and I am just enjoying discussing and collecting names) I wouldn’t be upset if [name_f]Kate[/name_f] was dropped from the name, as I love just [name_f]Molly[/name_f] too! I like that the hyphen emphasizes that she goes by the entire name. But I also feel like leaving the hyphen out gives her more options when choosing what to go by as she grows up. I think it’s going to be a hard decision if I go this route!

Of your suggestions I love:

[name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] (which is perfect because of qualities my mom and grandma shared that embody the names meaning.)
Molly-Faith [name_f]Elena[/name_f] (:face_holding_back_tears::heart:)
Molly-Kate [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
Molly-Kate [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] and
Molly-Kate [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] the most!

Thank you again!

@Teabelle Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I love [name_f]Molly[/name_f] too. I think it’s bright, fun, and sweet on a little girl while still aging well and being sophisticated on a teenager and a woman. You have also reminded me that I would spell it differently than our family friends did, even though the names are similar not identical, so that helps. I like your suggestion of [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]!

Thank you again!

@VEL Thank you so much! I love, love, love your suggestion of [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] (:face_holding_back_tears:)! @Greyblue Thank you so much! I do really like double names! But to be honest, I especially like them for other people’s our family friend can absolutely pull it off, it’s her double name is so cute on her, and she wears it very well. [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is really the only name I’ve ever considered using as a double name. I don’t know for sure if I’d be able to make it work as well as our friend does.

I love that the [name_f]Molly[/name_f] part is an honor name for my family. In the case of Molly-Kate or [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Kate[/name_f], specifically, [name_f]Kate[/name_f] could also be an honor name. I am choosing not to use [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as an honor, I just simply really like it. I think it’s popular enough that it wouldn’t necessarily be perceived as an honor by the perceived as an honor. If it is, that’s OK. [name_f]My[/name_f] parents gave me my middle name in honor of my grandma. [name_f]My[/name_f] aunt also shares the name and thinks I was given the name after both of them. While I love that I share a name with both of them, my parents told me it was really in honor of Grandma. All this to say it won’t bother me if the person who has a variation of [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as part of her name thinks it’s in honor of her.

Of your suggestions, I really like:
Molly-Anna
Molly-Brynn
Molly-Maeve
Molly-Rain
Molly-June and
Molly-Etta

I’d just like to point out, if you’re in the US, you can’t specify this on the birth certificate. They do capital letters for the entire name.

Of course, people still have names like MollyKate, where a letter in the middle is capitalized, but it’s like a “social name” not an official name.

If that matters to you. Totally ok if it doesn’t!

I once commented on someone’s FB baby announcement, complimenting their name choice for having 2 middles, like my daughter. She replied that her daughter actually has 2 first names. Oops, my mistake! She only had spaces between all the names. Not sure how many times that mistake/assumption will happen in their child’s life and if it will be a mild annoyance or something more significant.

I’m not sure how a space or hyphen within a first name impacts someone’s official documents as they grow up. I’d be curious to chat with different people who have one or the other, before deciding to do this myself. Not just parents who chose this for their children, but people who are now grown adults and have all that life experience to reflect on.

Otherwise, I don’t have a preference between Molly Kate and Molly-Kate, they both look nice.

I’ve always like Molly and Holly, I don’t know why I lump them together in my mind  They sound very nice, to me

Molly has a drug association, but I think it’s fairly out-dated and not a big deal. Still wanted to mention it, if you weren’t aware.

Molly Jane and Molly June, or MJ, has a similar association, but I think this one is less out-dated, so more notable to potentially avoid.

Before I had my daughter, I would have said the names were too close and not to use it. But now, I see how much things change in life. Just because you knew someone, or know someone now, doesn’t necessarily mean anything when your child is 5, 12, 18, 21, etc. To you or anyone else.

But I’ll be honest with you, every single time I typed a variation of Molly Kate in this post, I wrote Mary Kate instead. I just went through and changed them all. I was born in 1992, so Mary Kate and Ashley are, apparently, my brain’s default setting. But not everyone is a Millennial, so maybe this means nothing

This is my personal favorite, or Molly Elyse :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

@tallemaja Thank you so much! I think it’s cool that you go by [name_f]Molly[/name_f] online. I’m glad you get complimented on it, it is a really beautiful name! You and the other berries keep building my confidence to use it! If I never thought I’d say this, but I think [name_f]Molly[/name_f] might have a slight edge on [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] for me right now! I probably won’t write it as Mollykate. It looks strange to me when I see it, but I absolutely think it works well for our family friend. Maybe it looks off to me because they are different names? Right now, I am thinking of not using a hyphen and just introducing her with both names if I choose a double name. Everything other than the hyphenated version and the one without the hyphen feels off to me.

Thank you for liking [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] with me! In [name_f]Molly[/name_f] June’s case I may end up using a hyphen because both names are short. I wouldn’t hyphenate [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] because [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is very long. I go by a nickname with close family and friends, but my full name at other times or when I feel like it. [name_f]My[/name_f] full name is seven letters, and easy to spell, but I try to be mindful of length when thinking of making a child. I’d like to be at 10 letters or less.

Thank you again!

:butterfly::white_heart:

@Elle1 Thank you so for all the time and detail into this, I really appreciate it! You make some great points too.

I am also a millennial, so Mary-Kate and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] were a thing when I was growing up. I didn’t realize that about writing names on birth certificates, so thank you foe the tip! I feel like it might be annoying if someone wanted their child’s name spelled or written a certain way. I’m not terribly picky, and I wouldn’t mind correcting people, but I do feel like it may be a pain for her to correct a spelling or writing of her name all the time if it isn’t intuitive. That being said, I think I’m down to either a hyphen, or first and middle, while introducing her with both names. Thank you for mentioning the drug association with [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. At least right now, it doesn’t bother me. The name just brings me joy. I also love the connections it has to my family! I definitely agree that it’s important to be more careful about [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. I was hesitant to put that one on my list for that reason. It’s a reference that I could look past because I think the name is so cute. I don’t know that this combination in particular would be worth putting her through having to answer people’s potential questions about it.
I love [name_f]Molly[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f] and think it’s so sweet!

Thank you again!

I somehow completely missed this part of your original response, I’m sorry! I would also be very curious to find out what people who’ve grown up with hyphenated double names or double names with a space feel about their names. [name_f]Do[/name_f] they receive compliments? [name_f]Do[/name_f] they stand out and wish they didn’t? [name_f]Do[/name_f] they like that the uniqueness of their name starts a conversation?
