~ songs you would name your baby after

hi all! :musical_note:

i thought of this idea when i was driving in my car today, and because i’m just as much of a music nerd as i am a name nerd, i would just love to know your answers to this question!

what are some songs with names you love, either in the title or the lyrics?

mine, if you’re curious

“olivia” - rayland baxter
“josephine” - brandi carlile
“ezra” - becca vanderbeck
“(ramona)’s song” - bob dylan
“willow” - taylor swift
“ivy” - taylor swift
“august” - taylor swift
“evangeline” - emmylou harris
“gloria” - the lumineers
“ophelia” - the lumineers
“celeste” - donovan
“jennifer (juniper)” - donovan
“josie” - donovan
“eloise” - penny and sparrow
“daisy” - laura marling

so excited to read (and probably listen to) these :guitar:

going through a huge taylor swift phase right now… so many names in my uc are inspired by her. i probably wouldn’t name my children any of these names, but here they are anyway.

dorothy august (august)
dorothea moon (dorothea)
betty paloma (betty)
ellabeth james (betty)
inez (betty)

the only other one i can think of is olivia, after olivia rodrigo. i don’t have much variation in the music i listen to (:grimacing:), so there isn’t really anything else…

i love these combinations (and the songs that go along with them)! i’m a huge taylor swift and olivia rodrigo fan too!

very excited to see someone else who listens to them. i’ve definitely considered this song a plus for Eloise (and Sparrow & Finch). they also have songs with Adeline, Hannah, Eden, Lia, and Cheyenne.

there are a lot of songs referencing gold (gold, gold rush, golden, etc.) which always makes me think of Goldie and Marigold. the song far away by Ingrid Michaelson references sisters “Ella and Nelly and Faye” which sound so happy and twirly, even if Ella and Nelly are too close for sisters;) i also like the songs - and names - River (joni mitchell), August (taylor swift), Archie (flyte), … i’ll probably think of ten more as soon as i hit reply

we definitely have similar taste in music!!

this is a beautiful song! and it made me remember “amelia” by joni mitchell. i’d definitely name my daughter after either of those songs.

“dear winter” by ajr, for sure! it’s what originally made me love winter :snowflake:
i also like “ophelia” by the lumineers, and i’d definitely use ophelia if given the chance

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] by [name_f]Brandi[/name_f] [name_u]Carlisle[/name_u] came to mind for me too!!! I’m really excited reading that on your list!
Truthfully, any daughter I have with [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] in her name would be a [name_u]Jo[/name_u] [name_u]March[/name_u] honor, but I do love that sweet [name_f]Brandi[/name_f] song. [name_f]Special[/name_f] tie as the name [name_f]Brandi[/name_f] also reminds be of one of my dear cousins. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Also [name_f]Belle[/name_f] from Beauty&The beast. That’s a song, so I’ll count it.

The combos my partner and I have chosen for our first child are both partially inspired by songs!

[name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Elwyn[/name_m] (Hey [name_u]Jude[/name_u], an obvious one)
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Irene[/name_f] (For [name_f]Emily[/name_f], Whenever I [name_f]May[/name_f] Find Her - [name_m]Simon[/name_m] & Garfunkel / Goodnight, [name_f]Irene[/name_f] - folk song)

Ooh fun idea!!

Mine are:

[name_f]Delilah[/name_f] -Florence and the Machine
[name_u]Forest[/name_u] (Whitaker) -Bad Books
[name_u]Cody[/name_u] - The Killers
(All for) [name_f]Leyna[/name_f] - [name_u]Billy[/name_u] [name_m]Joel[/name_m]
(The [name_m]Ballad[/name_m] of Michael) [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] -The Killers
(St) [name_u]Jude[/name_u] - [name_u]Florence[/name_u] and the Machine

This was hard as i just forgot every song I’ve ever liked

Only one I can think of at the moment and it wouldn’t be after the song but the song does make me love the name more…
Olalla by Blanco White (Spotify)

I love the song [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], it reminds me of the summer and brings back good memories.

Some orhers:

marlena - the song is torna a casa by the Måneskin
caroline - from sweet caroline by neil diamond
elise - für elise by beethoven (do compositions count?)
rosemary - love grows by edison lighthouse („oh but love grows where my rosemary goes“)

@handlion “goodnight irene” is one of my favorite folk songs! and “hey jude” and “for emily, whenever i may find her” are amazing too!

@krijesnica of course compositions count! and i love måneskin too… i should’ve put “coraline” on my list!

lovely idea, marnie! i was considering starting a thread like this!

songs i’d name my child after:

rosemary, after love grows (where my rosemary goes) by edison lighthouse
eleanor, after eleanor rigby by the beatles
bennie after bennie and the jets by elton john (perhaps beatrice ‘bennie’?)
cecily after cecilia by simon and garfunkel
susie after wake up little susie by the everly brothers
valerie after valerie by mark ronson (feat amy winehouse)

jude after hey jude by the beatles
ben after ben by young michael jackson
johnny after johnny b. goode by chuck berry

Oh, I adore this song! Definitely makes me love Ezra more.

I also love the songs Willow, Ivy, August, Gloria, and Ophelia you mentioned! We have similar music taste, I think. Dorothea, Betty, Stephen, and Marjorie have also grown on me thanks to Taylor Swift songs.

A few songs I'd name my child after...

“Pearl” – Sobi (super sweet song about the singer’s daughter)

“Rylan” – The National (this song is actually a weird one to name a child after because it’s not super positive but I love it so unbelievably much that I would in fact use Rylan with the song in mind)

“Cecilia and the Satellite” – Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness (sweet song about his daughter. I also love the Simon and Garfunkel song “Cecilia” but not in a name-a-child-after-it way)

“April Come She Will” – Simon and Garfunkel (it’s about the month but I associate it with the name)

“Dear Avery” – The Decemberists (beautifully sad song about a son growing up and the implication of him going off to war where his parents can no longer protect him :broken_heart:)

I also really like “Visions of Gideon” by Sufjan Stevens, “Penelope” by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, “Genevieve” by the Brilliance, “Magnolia” by Big Red Machine, and “Emily” by Delacey. I wouldn’t name my kids after them, but they’re name-related songs that positively affect how I view those names. “Emily” in particular totally changed how I view the name – it makes Emily feel bold and mysterious and cool, rather than the warm, sweet feeling I usually get from it. Like :night_with_stars::boom::kiss: rather than :cherry_blossom: :womans_hat: :sunny:. Warning that the song contains swear words.
