Sonny- does it sound strange with our surname?

I absolutely adore the name [name]Sonny[/name] for our baby boy, however I am afraid it sounds weird with a surname which is Sayle.
Am i thinking it over too much and paranoid or do you think it sounds ok?

Thanks! :-)(

It sounds odd, but I don’t think it should be used for any baby, no matter his surname. It’s a generic, old-timey nickname for a boy and should only be prefaced with “back in my day…”

Anything ending in -son would be an awesome way to get the cute nn [name]Sonny[/name], but to give it as a stand-alone name is cruel.

[name]Bryson[/name]
[name]Harrison[/name]
[name]Greyson[/name]
[name]Pearson[/name]
[name]Judson[/name]
[name]Gibson[/name]
…many many more

all sound fantastic with Sayle.

I think it sounds odd as it sounds like [name]Sunny[/name] Sale, as in the sale today was sunny. I don’t think it’s cruel to name a son [name]Sonny[/name] or a complete deal breaker than it sounds odd, but I would suggest using it as a nickname for something else that contains [name]Son[/name] or [name]Sun[/name].

I could give you plenty of suggestions if you want them.

[name]Sonny[/name] [name]Bono[/name], whose given name was [name]Salvatore[/name], managed to reinvent himself from a B-list singer/variety show host into a Congressman. I’m not sure, however, that anyone could count on pulling that off. It’s probably best to give your son a name he could use as an adult. [name]Sonny[/name] Sayle would probably work as a nickname for an extroverted child in elementary school.

I think it sounds strange… like [name]Sunny[/name] Sale or [name]Sunny[/name] Sail. I also don’t think [name]Sonny[/name] is great as a stand-alone name, it’s a nickname only imo.

Yeah, I do think it sounds funny. Like others mentioned it sounds like a phrase “[name]Sunny[/name] Sale”. Not that the phrase makes much sense but if someone said it, I’m not sure my brain would immediately process it as a name. Sorry.

Naming a boy [name]Sonny[/name] would certainly not be cruel. I’m a fan of naming your child what you will the child, such as [name]Kate[/name] rather than [name]Katherine[/name], but even I would say [name]Sonny[/name] should probably be a nn rather than a given name. It’d be a very cute nn. [name]One[/name] of my favorite nn’s for a girl is [name]Sunny[/name].
