Sophie--Should I be worried about its popularity?

Hello Berries!

You were all so helpful in my first post looking for names that felt similar to Lily, Wren, and Margot. So, I’m back asking for more advice.

Lily had to be taken out of the running because we realized it rhymes with our dog’s name, Millie. While, still a lovely name, there’s no way we can use it as a first name now! Lily is now a contender for a middle name for Margot or Wren.

I was searching through names you all suggested and Sophie stuck out to me! It has a very similar feel to Lily and I think it sounds good with our last name (as a refresher, the first syllable our of last name is Eve-). Even my husband is on-board and really likes the way Sophie Wren flows!

My only concern is its popularity. It’s currently #86 in the US and number #91 in our state. That made me feel like it was so popular and unusable, until I saw that equated to only 65 babies in the whole state being named Sophie! Should I also add in how many Sophia’s were born because they might go by Sophie? Though, from my encounters, most Sophia’s I have met go by their full name. Am I overthinking it?

I feel like it matches the vibe of Margot and Wren and still feels like a name that will grow well with our babe as she becomes an adult.

What do you all think? Is it too popular? We would like her to not be Sophie E. through all 12 years of school, but I don’t mind her meeting another Sophie every now and again. Any names that have a similar feel to Sophie that sound good with a last name that starts with Eve- that you’d recommend?

Thank you!

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is a gorgeous name, but it is extremely popular. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] itself is lower, but every single [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] I’ve known goes by [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], so I do think it’s important to factor that in. She will more than likely be [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] E., but you never know!

[name_f]Iris[/name_f]

[name_f]Gemma[/name_f]

My husband and I have relatively less common names. In my high school class of 600, there were only 2 others with my name. And he’s only met 2 people his whole life with his name! So popularity is something that I never was concerned about. Now, I feel like I’m obsessing over it with every name we even slightly consider haha.

Your suggestions are lovely! Gemma and Nora are on our maybe list, just because I have two dear friends that told me they loved those for future children. We haven’t announced our pregnancy publicly yet, so I haven’t had the chance to ask them if they’re still their favorites (they’re both TTC this year).

Thank you! I appreciate your opinion and insight! It just seems to hit everything we want in a name: Light/happy feeling, not silly on an adult, and sounds great with our last name (which this one is proving harder than I thought it would be ha!). It’s only con is its popularity.

I don’t think you should allow popularity to deter you unless you’re absolutely against there being other Sophies in her peer group, and it sounds like it’s not a huge issue for you or your husband. All of the reasons you’ve just listed are why it’s so classic and popular! Personally, [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] is a family name and flows smoothly with our foreign last name (that can be very tricky!) - so regardless of popularity it will be a serious contender if my husband and I have a girl one day!

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u] or [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] seem like the best options for you!

I think [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u] sounds brilliant! [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is rather high on the charts, but to be fair, I don’t hear of it that often on younger children, the youngest [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] I know is 9. I don’t think its popularity should deter you at all, especially not from a name that sounds so perfect for you both!

Thank you! [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] really does feel like a special name. And [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] really is so elegant! What a lovely family name to have. [name_f]My[/name_f] family names are all double-barrel and very [name_u]Southern[/name_u] sounding. We will not be taking inspiration from Arnold-Lee, Bessie-Mae, or Mary-Jo for our baby this time around haha.

I feel stuck between the two! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband suggested [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u], but I like [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] flows better and I can convince him. The only cons I can think of for [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is that it’s not as soft-sounding as [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and could possibly be misspelled. What do you think?

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is warm, friendly, and generally lovely! It’s definitely popular; I’ve known a lot, especially counting Sophias. But I’m a firm believer that popularity shouldn’t be a reason not to use your favorite name–a high ranking just means a lot of people love it, usually for good reason (and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is certainly no exception there). It sounds like it’s pretty perfect for you in all other respects, so I vote use it! :yellow_heart:

You know, you make such a good point! I’m thinking of the Sophia’s I’ve met and they’d all be at least 8 years old by now! Another [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] I know just turned 20. Maybe its popularity is waning a bit, but it already feels so familiar that it’s not apparent yet? The more I saw [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u], the more I love it! Let’s hope this baby is a girl because we absolutely do not have a set boy’s list yet haha.

Thank you! That’s exactly what I envision when I think of [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]! [name_f]My[/name_f] only concern about the popularity is that it wouldn’t feel like a special name to her. But your comments and everyone else’s is convincing me to keep it as a main contender.

I know a bunch of Sophies, which is definitely no comfort. There’s definitely nothing wrong with using [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], but if popularity is a big concern it may be best to go for something else; here’s some alternatives that give me the same vibe:

Delphine/Delphie -
[name_f]Lia[/name_f] -
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f] - (ppl already said this but i agree)
[name_f]Lune[/name_f] -
May/Mae -
Lillia/Lilia - (underrated [name_f]Lily[/name_f] alternative imo)

And here’s a little made-up name I came up with when trying to name one of my mother’s dolls: Sophine
Almost the same thing, but not. It sounded cool, what can I say ?

That being said, if you love [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], go for it ! Popularity isn’t a necessarily a turn-off, and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is right to be so popular !

It’s overused in my experience. There isn’t much of a difference between [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] so I feel like it hear one or the other very often, to compare my name [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] is overused but if I hear of someone whose name is just [name_u]Abby[/name_u], I’d still think it’s overused? [name_m]Just[/name_m] because most Abigail’s go by some variation of [name_u]Abby[/name_u]. But if you love the name [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] then I think you should use it. But I definitely think it’s very popular.

Thanks for your opinion! I definitely see what you’re saying with the Abby/Abigail example. I guess I just don’t see [name_u]Abby[/name_u] as a stand-alone name, but [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is because it’s the [name_u]French[/name_u] variant of [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. Does that reasoning make sense? Its popularity definitely puts it third on our list (we’re trying to only have three favorites so we can try them out in everyday life more).

[name_f]My[/name_f] youngest daughter is [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Maren[/name_f] so I (of course) love the name! I think the popularity thing isn’t that bad and 65 babies in the whole of your state certainly isn’t something to worry about imo. I think [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_u]Wren[/name_u] is gorgeous and I agree, it does have a lovely flow to it!

Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it! As you said, I don’t know any Sophias who don’t go by their full name, and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is really not too popular, despite being in the Top 100.

I’d go for it! [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is so sweet, and it seems like the perfect choice for you.

Thank you! [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Maren[/name_f] is such a lovely name! Has your daughter run into many other Sophie’s?

Thank you! [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is really growing on me as my favorite.

And my husband walked around this morning saying, “Dr. [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] (our last name)” and said it passed the doctor test. So he’s definitely on board now haha.

Sophine honestly sounds like an actual name, so well-done you for creating one that doesn’t sound made-up! Thank you for your opinions and suggestions. [name_f]Lia[/name_f] and [name_f]Mae[/name_f] are lovely suggestions. I think I prefer the [name_f]Lia[/name_f] spelling to [name_f]Leah[/name_f], but would be afraid it would be misspelled constantly.
