Sorting out My GP List

I’m currently cutting down my name list, and I’m noticing a large number of names I’m uncertain on, so they’ve been placed into my guilty pleasure list. I am fully aware that most of them are very cutesy, but that is my style, so please, if you are going to comment saying that I’m not thinking about my imaginary child’s future, or that I’m going to some how emotionally scar them, (not going to even talk about ttc for about 5 years considering I have no SO at the moment, and I havent turned 19 yet), then those comments aren’t necessary and I would prefer not having to see them

That issue aside, I’m looking to see if the names are unusable in any way (other than the cutesy thing). Are there any well known, horrible connections? Are there any negative aspects to the name?

[name_f]Edeline[/name_f] ([name_m]Ed[/name_m]-ell-leen/[name_m]Ed[/name_m]-ell-line)

thank you!

Honestly, I have never understood the “cutsie” argument. During my grandparents and great-grandparents’ time (maybe even further back) a good many went by nicknames, some “cutsie”. Sure, most likely, many had full names but they didn’t go by them. Look at the list of names for the US House of Representatives or of the US Senate, notice the nicknames, some are pretty cutsie. Some people prefer formal names, so be, but that is not a rule, that is a choice. Others choose less formal, or what some might think is too cutsie, that is their choice. [name_m]How[/name_m] children are raised matters much more than the name.

I would say all the names are usable. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites -

[name_f]Sienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Gracie[/name_f]
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] - has been growing on me
[name_f]Libby[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] - [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] is lovely also
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_f]Hattie[/name_f]

[name_f]Gracie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Edie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]

One of the managers at my work is named [name_f]Teenie[/name_f] (legal given name) and the other is [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] I think the -[name_f]May[/name_f] names are my favourites, haha. [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] is already on my list as a favourite  That’s exactly how I few the ‘cute’ argument though, I cant help what I like, so I don’t appreciate being turned away from the names I do like. Honestly, that’s what kids used to do to bully me in school, mock the things I liked/was interested in, in order to steer me away from them or make sure I knew I was different. [name_m]Just[/name_m] seems very unfair to me, aha.

It wasn’t fair and it still isn’t fair. I am sorry that people have treated you poorly. I will always be my own person and march to the beat of my own drum. I fortunately was not bullied, there was far less bullying when I was in school, or at least around the area I lived. [name_f]My[/name_f] son is highly gifted and he felt that classmates looked at him funny and thought he was very different. I told him he was different and very special. We are all unique, different, and special. He started dumbing himself down to fit in. We ended up pulling him and homeschooling him.

The only real “horrible connection” I can make here is that [name_u]Seren[/name_u] sounds exactly like sarin gas; definitely not a good connection. I wasn’t familiar with the name, and when I met a young lady who introduced herself as [name_u]Seren[/name_u], I thought, “Sarin? What were her parents thinking?”

[name_f]Addie[/name_f] always makes me think of adder snakes, but that may just be me. [name_f]Bessie[/name_f] is a stereotypical bovine name; I’m not sure why, but I am definitely not the only one on this one. I do like [name_f]Bess[/name_f] a lot, however, and that doesn’t have the same connotations to my knowledge. [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] makes me think of people ailing; I do love [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f].

This isn’t a negative association, but [name_f]Tia[/name_f] means “aunt” in Spanish, so it’s not bad, just seems a bit odd. Similarly (not necessarily negative, but something to be aware of and take with what you will), I think [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] (at least in the States) will bring up the immediate association of [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] Mouse. Possibly because the only other [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] in pop culture is actress [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] [name_m]Driver[/name_m].

I originally read [name_f]Bridie[/name_f]-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u] as [name_f]Birdie[/name_f]-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u], and thought it was a typo. I think this will be a common misconception. [name_f]Bridie[/name_f] makes me think of bridles.

Other than that, you’ve got some really lovely names on your list, despite our vastly different naming styles. I like [name_f]Saskia[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] best.

The only thing that I can think of is that [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] will most likely encounter pronunciation issues, but I’m sure that you already know that. Other than that, I love most of these names!

@lovemysweeties - It happened a lot to me as a kid, until I was about 16 or so (so nearly 10 years). Looking back on it, and the other reasons why they bullied me, I don’t really understand what their problem was. I’m not gifted in anyway, I’m not exactly drop dead gorgeous, I’m not overly outgoing, there’s nothing to be jealous of me of (which apparently is the reason why most children bully), so I still don’t get it. I think it was harder as a child though, no one understood me when I tried to voice myself, so it was a bit challenging.

It’s sad when kids are bullied for something like being intelligent. I was nearly home schooled, but I live in a really small town, and I always went to elementary school with the same handful of kids (minus the ones who moved to/from my school), so I figured that home schooling me wouldn’t go over well when I got to high school with those same kids again (we have 1 public high school and 1 catholic high school here, so the kids in my grade split themselves in half between the two).

I’m likely being overdramatic, but some users do seem to bully a bit when it comes to their opinions.

@bibliophile - I understand where you’re coming from with [name_u]Seren[/name_u]. I think I’m drawn to it because it has ties to my background, but I may relegate it to the middle spot. [name_f]Addie[/name_f] and [name_f]Bessie[/name_f] don’t bother me as much with the connections, and [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] doesn’t as much either.

The [name_f]Minnie[/name_f] Mouse thing could be quite cute while she’s a child though, my sister is [name_f]Mikayla[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mikki[/name_f] ([name_m]Mick[/name_m]-ee) and she was always getting the [name_u]Mickey[/name_u] Mouse connection, she loved it  Now she gets connected to [name_f]Merida[/name_f] from Disney’s Brave (she looks EXACTLY like her), and still loves it (at 15 and a half), so I will consider that, but I’m not really concerned by it (or [name_f]Tia[/name_f] for that matter).

I do understand the problem with [name_f]Bridie[/name_f]-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u] though, thank you for pointing it out

@mabespark - I know, :frowning: same with Saoirse and Roisin :frowning: but I do know that in my area, there’s a neighbourhood named Saoirse Heights (Freedom Heights) so it mightn’t be as bad here. Something tells me that unless I move to Ireland, I’ll have to move them down to the middle spot.

Thanks for all the input!

I don’t think any of them are unusable, except maybe [name_f]Bessie[/name_f], which people are going to associate with a cow
[name_f]Christabel[/name_f] isn’t great for me either… not scarring or anything, but it doesn’t really fit with the sweet vibe of the rest of the list. It’s more dated, and I get a negative vibe from it, but I don’t really know why.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites are:
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f]
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f]
[name_u]Seren[/name_u]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Saskia[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] (without the [name_f]May[/name_f] part, though)
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f]

I like all the names on your list except:

[name_u]Lexie[/name_u], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_f]Addie[/name_f], and [name_f]Minnie[/name_f]- I don’t like any of these because these are all nn’s to me. I don’t dislike them as nicknames (Except [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], I’m not a an of that one) but I’m not a fan of them being a fn.

Not a fan of the [name_f]Bridie[/name_f]-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u] combo either. It looks like bride, like bride and groom. And it just sounds funny to me.

Other than that… [name_u]Love[/name_u] the names! Oh and btw [name_f]Libby[/name_f] is also a nn for [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]. (:

I’ve never understood the whole “too cutesy” comment, personally. Maybe it’s because my mom and I both have names classified as “cutesy” or “nickname only” but I’ve always loved that category of name!

I’m really loving:
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Esme[/name_f] (one of my all time faves!)
[name_u]Seren[/name_u] (love it–so simple and crisp sounding, and I love that it means [name_f]Star[/name_f])
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] (my mom’s name!)
[name_f]Hattie[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] (love!!)
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] (so gorgeous!)
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f]

I also like: [name_f]Gracie[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Aoife[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Gracie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f], [name_f]Roisin[/name_f], [name_f]Bessie[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], and [name_f]Addie[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not quite as much as the ones above.

The ones that are just okay to me are:
[name_f]Bridie[/name_f]-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u]—I read it as [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] at first, and I think I actually prefer it that way. [name_f]Bridie[/name_f] is super cute though! Some people might be a little confused by it, but that can happen with tons of more well known names, too.
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]—I love in theory, but it just doesn’t sound good when I say it. Super huge bummer.
[name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f]—Another I love in theory, but the spelling is just so tough to get right (I have to think hard every time I type it!)
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]—I like it, it’s just become a bit boring (who would’ve thought!)

The rest aren’t my style but there’s no name that I super dislike!

@lucialucentum - thank you  I know the [name_f]Bessie[/name_f] association isn’t as nice, so I may just use it as a pet name for [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. With [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], I meant them as a combination. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] are all on my list, but (with [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] especially) I like the sound of them as a double barrel name with [name_f]May[/name_f], but I feel like the hyphen makes it look more ‘together’ if that makes sense?

@vofarrell26 - well, since nicknames as FNs are my style, I don’t think that’s a problem for me, haha! I’m not a fan of [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], or [name_f]Libby[/name_f] as a nn for it though

@lavenderj - I love it too, and I don’t have a cutesy name at all (my name’s [name_u]Haley[/name_u], haha). Maybe it’s the ‘ee’ sound I’m attracted to? Or the sweetness of the names? I’m not really sure, ;D

Yeah, I can see confusion with [name_f]Bridie[/name_f]-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u], but for some reason, I’m really drawn to it. I’ve met a few [name_f]Bridie[/name_f]'s and 1 [name_f]Bridie[/name_f]-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u] before, but they were all from [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], or had Irish parents. I get what you mean with [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] and [name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f] too, my little sister says [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] as ‘odd-ill-ee’, which is a set back (she’s not little in a young sense, haha she’s 15), and I always have to take a minute before I type/write out [name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f] too!

I’ve sorted the GP’s out now, and they are:

Favourites: [name_f]Lacey[/name_f], [name_f]Gracie[/name_f], [name_f]Emilia[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Polly[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Gracie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], , [name_f]Addie[/name_f], [name_f]Harper[/name_f], [name_f]Esme[/name_f], [name_u]Lexie[/name_u], [name_f]Lauren[/name_f], [name_u]Seren[/name_u], [name_f]Lacey[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]

Like, but not [name_u]Love[/name_u]: [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], [name_f]Bridie[/name_f]-[name_f]Leigh[/name_f], [name_f]Libby[/name_f], [name_f]Aoife[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], [name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Saskia[/name_f]
, [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], [name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f], [name_f]Dulcie[/name_f], [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f], [name_f]Roisin[/name_f], [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], [name_f]Bessie[/name_f]/[name_f]Bess[/name_f], [name_f]Christabel[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]-[name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Augusta[/name_f], [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Edeline[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]-[name_f]May[/name_f]

Thank you everyone
