Sorting through the top picks

I would love some help sorting through my top 20 names for a brother to my son, H0rat1o F3lix.

In no particular order:

[name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]/[name_m]Julien[/name_m]/[name_m]Julius[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m]/[name_m]Lucien[/name_m]/[name_m]Lucius[/name_m]
[name_u]Chauncey[/name_u]
[name_m]Antony[/name_m]
[name_m]Silvius[/name_m]
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m]
Amicus
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m]
[name_m]Severin[/name_m]
[name_m]Corentin[/name_m]
[name_u]Mercer[/name_u]/Mercier
[name_m]Gawain[/name_m]
[name_m]Marius[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Idris[/name_m]
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]

Noticing a lot of the S sound and a lot of N, too.
What are the standout names to you?

My favorites from your list are:
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]/[name_m]Julius[/name_m]
Sylvius
[name_m]Marius[/name_m]

[name_m]Favorite[/name_m] combination: [name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_m]Marius[/name_m] (or [name_m]Marius[/name_m] [name_m]Julian[/name_m], they both work really well)

Other possibilities:
[name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_m]Idris[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] [name_m]Idris[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] [name_m]Julian[/name_m]/ [name_m]Julian[/name_m] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Gawain[/name_m] [name_m]Marius[/name_m]
[name_m]Gawain[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]
[name_m]Silvius[/name_m] [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] [name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Antony[/name_m] [name_u]Mercer[/name_u]

The ones that pop out most to me with your son’s name are [name_m]Solomon[/name_m], [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], and [name_m]Gawain[/name_m].

combo ideas…
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m] [name_m]Idris[/name_m]
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] Amicus
[name_m]Gawain[/name_m] [name_m]Antony[/name_m]

The real standouts to me are [name_m]Antony[/name_m], Amicus and [name_m]Gawain[/name_m].

[name_m]Antony[/name_m], I love the soft sound. It’s similar to the popular [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] but feels more universal and unexpected. [name_m]Antony[/name_m] feels so very romantic and handsome.

Amicus, is a fairly new one for me. I think the only place I’ve seen it before was here in the nameberry forums, and maybe that was also by you? I love the amity/amiable connection. It gives this unusual name such a friendly, laid back feel.

[name_m]Gawain[/name_m], I don’t ever quite know why I’m so attracted to this name. I think it’s the almost fairytale like vibes I get from [name_m]Gawain[/name_m]. It feels like an ancient world, like a story book.

You do have so many wondeful names on your list that really I could write about many more, but these are the three that really speak to me above the rest.

I like these name for [name_m]Horatio[/name_m]'s brother:
[name_m]Antony[/name_m] (they sound very Shakespearean together!)
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Gawain[/name_m]
[name_m]Idris[/name_m]

My favorites are [name_m]Solomon[/name_m], [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m] and [name_u]Mercer[/name_u]. If I had to pick just one I think I’d go with [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]. Good luck!

I lived [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], [name_m]Solomon[/name_m], and [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]. They all have a gruff masculinity to them, while still composing of softer consonants, like [name_m]Horatio[/name_m]. I also love the [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] and [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] sibset, since they were both extraordinary sea captains.

I love [name_m]Antony[/name_m], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], and [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]. [name_m]Antony[/name_m] and [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] are my favorites.

[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] is my favorite! Lots of cool names on this list. My other faves would be [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], [name_m]Benedict[/name_m] (not as out of the ordinary), and [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m].

The standouts for me are: [name_m]Julius[/name_m] and [name_m]Benedict[/name_m].

With [name_m]Horatio[/name_m], I feel like there are several directions you could go in terms of sibling sets (if you are planning on more than two that is)

Grand heros
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m]

Historical and down to earth
[name_m]Antony[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]/[name_m]Julien[/name_m]/[name_m]Julius[/name_m] - I like all variations but think Julius sounds best with Horatio
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m]/[name_m]Lucien[/name_m]/[name_m]Lucius[/name_m] - I prefer Lucian/Lucien

Enchanted and whimsical
[name_m]Silvius[/name_m]
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] - I really like this one even if it is a bit fanciful
Amicus
[name_m]Gawain[/name_m]
[name_m]Marius[/name_m] - may fit better in the first category but it feels so much less grand than the others and the feel of it goes better here I think. If DH had been on board, this may have been my son’s middle name, so I like it quite a bit.
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]

Making a statement (my least favorite as a category)
[name_u]Chauncey[/name_u]
[name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m]
[name_m]Severin[/name_m]
[name_m]Corentin[/name_m] - I do like this one. Both this and Severin are both also touched with a bit of whimsy

I love [name_m]Idris[/name_m] but am not sure where it would fit in my break down. I’m not sure how I feel about [name_u]Mercer[/name_u]/Mercier and where it would go.

I like the names from the first three categories quite a bit but think the names in the first two categories may be the most usable and “go” with [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] the best. I think the enchanted names may make better middles. The categories are definitely not perfect and I struggled to place a few of them that could probably fit into more than one.

Names I especially like as first names with [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] are [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] (my favorite!), [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m], [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], and [name_m]Julius[/name_m]. [name_m]Antony[/name_m] has a bit less gravitas to me but it is also great.

I’m not using all of my favorite names, but some combos that jump out from these include
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] [name_m]Antony[/name_m]
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] [name_m]Gawain[/name_m]
Solomon [name_m]Idris[/name_m]
[name_m]Julius[/name_m] [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m] or [name_m]Julius[/name_m] [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]

Pear bear! We love that book

Anyway, fantastic list — these are the standouts for me:

[name_m]Lucian[/name_m]: [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], soft, unusual but widely familiar name (just like [name_m]Horatio[/name_m]). Several nice options for nicknames. Feels a tad “safer” than H but by no means bland!

[name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m]: I think this is really cool! The storybook connection is sweet, and it’s got a lot of weight and import to it which stands up well to H’s name. Ferdy is just adorable as a nn too!

[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]: Again, this has a very similar feel to your son’s name to me. Perhaps a tad on the religious side if you’re not (?) but such a strong, distinguished choice which is very underused.

[name_m]Severin[/name_m]: I love this name! It’s so spiky and funky and “don’t mess with me”.

[name_m]Corentin[/name_m]: Striking and once again very distinguished, but this one has a sweet, sensitive, romantic feel to it, as well as a storybook vibe (though I don’t know if there is a literary connection?) I love this one too.

[name_m]Marius[/name_m]: Gorgeous name! I love that they don’t shy away from “feminine” sounds in male names in continental Europe. I think this is a beautiful but also powerful choice that stands up well to big bro’s name.

[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]: Another lovely storybook option with a really majestic, yet fun, feel to it. I love [name_m]Pip[/name_m] and [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] as nicknames for this — so bright and sweet!

I’m definitely drawn to longer names for you — H has a rather regal name to stand up to and I think his brother’s name would need some weight to it too.

My top 3 for you would be:

[name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m]
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]
[name_m]Corentin[/name_m]

I like
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]
[name_u]Mercer[/name_u]
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m]

I dislike
Amicus
[name_u]Chauncey[/name_u]
[name_m]Gawain[/name_m]
[name_m]Idris[/name_m]
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_m]Silvius[/name_m]

I like

[name_m]Julian[/name_m]
[name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m]
[name_m]Corentin[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]

[name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] are my favorites by far.

Standout, to me, are…

[name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
[name_m]Julian[/name_m]/[name_m]Julien[/name_m]/[name_m]Julius[/name_m] (of those I like traditional [name_m]Julian[/name_m] best)
[name_m]Antony[/name_m]
[name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m]
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]

Although they are fun words to say, I just can’t get behind some options like [name_m]Nicodemus[/name_m] (I would ALWAYS sing the song) or Clauncey or [name_m]Gawain[/name_m]. I feel like they don’t feel right next to spunky H0ratio. Of the names I listed above that I do like, I like [name_m]Ferdinand[/name_m] and [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] best. I also note in your signature that you have [name_m]Ignace[/name_m], which feels very incomplete to me, but I do like [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m] or [name_m]Ignacio[/name_m].
